April, 2017 Precision Rifleman 5 Arizona State Championship Two Gun January 7-8, 2017 We would like to thank everyone who came out to this January s Sporter and Unlimited 5-shot Arizona State Championships. This championship will combine with February s to create a 3 and 4 gun aggregate. We were happy to see 35 shooters in total over this weekend, including 4 junior shooters. As always, thank you to those who brought out junior shooters; Lou Murdica brought his grandchildren, Anthony and Angelina, Chuck Miller brought his grandson Garett, and Tom DeBacco brought his son Tony. This weekend s match started off windy, but then we had some of the best conditions we ve seen at Ben Avery Shooting Facility in a while. The entire weekend went off without a hitch, which was a great considering all the wind we had to put up with in December. The match kicked off with sporter 100 yard. Brad Jensen had a screamer in match two with a 0.064. Larry White finished in the top place with a 0.1852 agg, followed behind closely by Gary Ocock s 0.1856, with James Coulter taking 3rd place with a 0.2190. Saturday afternoon s Unlimited 100 yard matches gave us some of the best conditions we ve seen. Every single match had a screamer! In match 1 small group went to Doc Marsh with a 0.081, Match 2 Dan Sutton shot a 0.080, Match 3 James Coulter got a 0.078, Match 4 Edwin Maxwell shot a 0.097, and Match 5 ended with Dan Sutton getting a 0.088. The real star of the 100 yard agg though was local junior shooter, Tony DeBacco, who shot 3 screamers and ended with a grand agg of 0.1132! He was followed by Dan Sutton s 0.1292 and Dana Andrus s 0.1322. We submitted both Tony and Dan s targets to the record committee to see how they measure. If Tony s agg rings true upon checking, then he will have beaten the standing record by 0.0110. Sunday continued with great conditions and great groups. We started with Unlimited 200 yard, and Bob Brackney showed us all how it is done. Not only did he shoot small group for the day, which was 0.107, but his grand agg was 0.1036! That is 0.0197 below the current record. That made 3 possible records that we turned in this weekend. Behind him, James Coulter took 2nd with a 0.1553 and Chuck miller took 3rd with a 0.1592. For the sporter 200 yards we had Keith Cottrell in the lead with a 0.1880, followed by Lester Bruno s 0.1969 and Bud Mundy s 0.2124. At the end of Sunday, the sporter grand went to Bud Mundy with a 0.2185, with Lester Bruno in 2nd with a 0.2305 and Randy Burgess in 3rd with a 0.2332. The unlimited grand went to Bob Brackney with a 0.1442, followed by Chuck miller at 0.1479 and James Coulter with 0.1511. This weekend s 2-gun grand agg was taken by Bob Brackney with a 0.1905, with Randy burgess right behind him at 0.1926 and

8 Precision Rifleman Arizona State Championship 4-Gun February 4-5, 2017 The Arizona Bench Rest Shooters would like to thank everyone who came out this last weekend for the second leg of the 2017 Arizona State Championships. This weekend consisted of Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint at 100 and 200 yards. It combined with last month s Sporter and Unlimited scores to create a 3-gun and a 4-gun. Practice started off with perfect weather and a few shooters eager to start practicing as soon as we set up Thursday morning. The mornings were a little chilly, but in all we had just about perfect weather until Sunday morning, when the wind kicked up quite a bit. Later into the day on Sunday it calmed back down and we saw some improvements M E T A L Magnum Metal 940.631.4545 shunter@nts-online.net PRECISION PERFORMANCE Magnum Metal 940.631.4545 hunter.scott1@twc.com on group sizes. Saturday morning started with Light Varmint 100 yard matches. Bud Mundy started the day off right with a screamer, shooting a 0.093 in the first match. Followed by William Marsh who shot a 0.089 in the second match. Bob Brackney ended up getting the small group for the gun and yardage though, with a 0.081 in the fifth match. In the Agg, Tom DeBacco took 3rd with a 0.2022, Ed Adams took 2nd with a 0.1896, and Lester Bruno came in 1st with a 0.1816. Saturday afternoon we shot the Heavy Varmint 100 yard matches. In the Agg, Bob Brackney came in 3rd with a 0.2010, Tom Libby took 2nd with a 0.1994, and Stephen Everson took 1st with a 0.1956. Sunday started off windy and we saw a lot of groups well over an inch at 200 yards with Heavy Varmint Rifles. However, Lester Bruno didn t let the wind get to him and started the morning off with a 0.281 in some pretty harsh conditions. This allowed him to take 3rd in the agg with a 0.2664. Joel Nader took 2nd with a 0.2623, and Bob Brackney came in 1st with a 0.2605. In the Heavy Varmint Grand Agg, Stephen Everson took 3rd with a 0.2441, Lester Bruno took 2nd with a 0.2414, and Bob Brackney took 1st with a 0.2308. Randy Burgess came in 3rd with a 0.2534, Bud Mundy took 2nd with a 0.2335, and Lester Bruno took the lead with a 0.2208. In the Light Varmint Grand Agg Ed Adams took 3rd with a 0.2311, Bud Mundy came in 2nd with a 0.2188, and Lester Bruno came in 1st with a 0.2012. The Light Varmint and Heavy Varmint Grand Aggs combined into a 2-Gun Grand Agg. Larry White took 3rd with a 0.2556, Bob Brackney took 2nd with a 0.2555, and Lester Bruno had a convincing lead with a 0.2213. When adding on the Sporter from last month to create the 3-Gun, Bob Brackney came in 3rd with a 0.2493, Bud Mundy took 2nd with a 0.2450, and Lester Bruno took 1st with a 0.2244. Finally adding in the Unlimited 5-Shot matches from last month, we get the 4-Gun Grand Agg. Randy Burgess came in 3rd with a 0.2343, Bob Brackney took 2nd with a 0.2230, and In the lead we had Lester Bruno with a 0.2195. Thanks again to everyone who came out this month and last

20 Precision Rifleman Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest Surrounded by the Billotte Gang by Dale Arenson What was I doing here? In this tense situation, sitting there, surrounded by the notorious Billotte Gang. How was I going to shoot my way out of this? These hombres were some of the best shooters in the Arizona desert and they had me right in their sights. And I really was surrounded by them. Mike was on the bench to my right, Jeff to my left and Pat on the one next to him. We had a good turn out, almost filling up the firing line on all of the relays. The weather can be just about perfect this time of year at the Three Points Range, thirty miles west of Tucson. Temps were about 50 degrees in the early morning and Accugauge Quick case sizing measurement to 0.0001 Readjust sizing die w/o using bolt feel Observe case ageing as you load 6mmPPC Can be used for other calibers using your 7/8 seating dies by means of an optional $5 bushing www.6mmppc.com by the time we were done at 1:00, it was only about 82 degrees. Not bad for the middle of winter. I wish I could say the same for the shooting conditions. For relay one, the wind was somewhat kind to us, and even the light gun crew in relay three turned in some very good groups and agg's. For the day, there were 21 sub-moa groups and two thirds of our light gun shooters put in sub-moa aggregates. Dale Arenson shot a 4.43'' group, Kim Krueger shot a 4.18'' and Mike Billotte had a 4.06'' and none of those even got small group. All three of Bill Warner's groups were sub-moa for a respectable 8.68'' aggregate, but he was still fourth. Billotte Gang leader Jeff, who has apparently been on the run somewhere for the last few months, was back and shot three very nice groups, a 6.2'', a 6.5'' and a 5.6'' for a 6.12'' agg and he was only second! It was Mike Billotte who really $90 shipped U.S. showed us how it was done with a 3.6'', that previously mentioned 4.06'' and a 5.2'' for an amazing 4.31'' aggregate. Who does he think he is, Ross Herrick? We were all appropriately impressed and envious at the same time. Wow! In Score, Mike only dropped ten points for a 140, but it was Pat Billotte who out-drew his brother, also shooting a 140, but with two X's to win for score. Right on their heels was Jeff with a 137-4X. So it was the whole Billotte Gang topping first, second and third in Light Gun. Oh, and the high individual score in light was Mike's 3.6'' group which was also a 50 score. Nice shootin' guys! In the pits during relay four, the winds would blow, sometimes standing the flags out at 12 to 15 mph, then a few minutes later they would be hanging down along the pole, limp and unmoving. When the record firing period would start, here would come the wind again, and you could watch the shots start traveling across the target like a car being tracked on a map of Route 66, and the shots heading from Chicago to Los Angeles. Remember, there are no wind flags for the first 500 yards at this range, so any change in the conditions can be, shall we say, challenging to keep up with. Heavy Gun produced eleven sub- MOA groups, but only one sub-moa aggregate. That would be Dale Arenson who was lucky enough to post all three groups as sub-moa, for a winning 7.93'' agg. It was the same in score, where Dale was able to keep all three groups centered enough for a 90, 97 and 99 to end with a 286-4X. Also winning for both high score and small group, just like Mike Billotte, with one target. In this case, a 99-3X that was a 6.43'' group. Targets and equipment put away, trophies handed out, pictures taken, we wrapped it up for the last

match of the year. Lucky for us, even though our favorite cafe, Cindy Lou's, was closed for good, a new restaurant had opened just down the road, so we were still able to get together for lunch and talk about all things gun related, or not related. Come join us in 2017, second Saturday of every month. Even with our large turnouts, we still have room for a few more shooters to join the fun, Just watch out for that Billotte Gang, if they're not in jail somewhere, they will probably be back to harass the rest of us again. 22 Precision Rifleman Sahuaro 1000-Yard Benchrest Winter in the Desert by Dale Arenson January 14, 2017 There we were, standing around in the pits, hands in pockets, stamping our feet, winter coats on, trying to stay out of the rain. But it was worse on the shooting line, even though covered, the shooters in relay four were trying to stay dry from the wind blowing in under the roof, (it wasn't working), wiping rain drops off the lenses of scopes, trying to keep ammo dry, hoping to get it over with soon so they could get their gear put away and go somewhere to dry out. Not a scene you see very often in the southern Arizona desert. But being as the rest of the country was putting up with ice storms, snow, floods and mud slides, we still didn't think we were all that bad off. We had a big crowd out to brave the elements this time. Must be the last election that put people in good spirits and made them want to go try their hand at long range shooting competition. It seemed to start out well for shooting conditions in relay one, but even though we had seven sub-moa aggregates in light gun, relay one was tougher than it looked. It turned out that the top light gun shooters were all from the second squad in relay three. Being as I was in relay one, I am claiming we just had crappy conditions. That's my story and I am sticking to it! I consider the conditions like the luck of the draw in a card game. You get dealt what ever you get dealt, what you do with it is what counts. I just wish that buffing worked better. Not that the relay three guys didn't do some excellent shooting. The weather was moving in and the wind was picking up. We had no less than 23 sub-moa groups shot in light gun that day, and yes, many of them by the guys in relay one. But it was the relay three guys who really shined. Bill Warner shot some great targets with a 7.39'' aggregate and a 133-2X score, but he was tied by John Benz who not only shot a 133-2X, but he turned in a 6.13'' aggregate, winning for group, plus the highest target, a 50-2X and the smallest group of 4.12''. So the tie in light gun score went to John also. Out of all of these shooters, Heavy Gun produced 10 sub-moa groups and only three sub-moa aggregates, (anything less than 10.472'') Ross Herrick braving the relay four storm put in a 10.04'' aggregate to take second place for group, however Dale Arenson, who got dealt a better hand in relay two, turned in all sub-moa groups with a 7.1'' aggregate for first place. One of his groups had 9 shots in just under 4'', but with one maverick bullet opening it up to 6''. Another Screamer Patch slips away. Don't you just hate flyers! In score, there was no less than 11 single target scores in the 90's, good shooting by all, Mike Billotte, also battling the wind and rain put in the best score of relay four with a 270-2X, but in the end once again it was Dale who was able to keep all three targets centered, with a 97-X (highest single target), a 97 and a 94-xx to win for high score 288-3X. You will notice that there are no smiling ''winner pictures'' this time, since the targets were all

wet and scoring had not gone as smoothly as usual, Karl had all the stat's written down but not tallied, so we decided the final results could wait and that it was more important to go dry off, have lunch together and get off the range before the flash floods started. The trophies could be distributed next month. In spite of the weather, we all had a good time getting to shoot together and visit once again. It happens every month on the second Saturday. Mark your calendar and we'll see you there, but don't bother to bring your raincoat and umbrella, weather like this never happens more than once a year in Arizona. In the photo p.22 is Lon Persun. We began with the VFS 100 yards on Saturday with temperatures in the low 80 s and light but switchy winds. The 250 s ran 8 deep with Chet Whitebread out X-ing the pack at 250-21X. The 100 yard Hunter got a little trickier with temps and wind both picking up. TK Nollan was the only one who managed to stay clean at 250-16X. We started Sunday morning 200 s with Hunter and more mild conditions. Mike Bigelow shot a solid 250-4X for the win which also gave him the Hunter Grand at 499-18X. We finished off with VFS 200 s and Howard Cowher shot a nice 250-7X. Mike Bigelow s 250-6X combined with his 250-20X at 100 gave him the Grand. Mike wound up with a 999-44X for the Two Gun Score Championship. Congratulations to Mike and thank you for all the shooters who participated in this fun event. 26 Precision Rifleman Richard Bruce Andrews Bruce Andrews, age 69, passed away Monday January 30, 2017 in Portland, OR surrounded by loved ones. He was born on May 4, 1948 in Kodiak, AK to Denver and Oleta Clark Andrews. Bruce grew up on the island of Kodiak with his mother, father, and 5 siblings. As a young man, he worked in various fishing canneries. When not working, he spent his time hunting, fishing, and exploring the Island. At the age of 16, he met Robin Eyman, the girl he would spend the rest of his life with. Bruce and Robin were married in November 1966, and spent the next 50 years of their lives together. Shortly after their wedding in 1966, he joined the US Navy and set sail as a radioman on the WWII diesel submarine, USS Diodon (SS- 349). He then served on the WWII diesel submarine, USS Segundo (SS- 398) before transferring to nuclear powered submarines. Bruce sailed the 7 seas for the next 23 years on various submarines and retired USN Master Chief in 1988. After completing his military service, he went on to work for various DOD contractors as a satellite communications engineer working on some of the nation s most noted Naval vessels. In 2008, Bruce officially retired and proclaimed that he was going fishing (and so he did)! He spent his retirement years custom crafting fishing rods, tying flies and jigs and fishing in as many rivers in Idaho, Oregon, Washington, and Montana as he could. Bruce was also a competitive bench rest shooter who won many competitions. His passion for shooting was felt by many and he loved to share his experience and knowledge with others. His wife Robin, his daughters and grandchildren survive Bruce: Sheri Belonus of Lakewood, WA, and her children Justin and Kayla, Keri Keeling of Boise, ID and her daughter Kennedi. Surviving siblings are Lois Andrews of Puyallup, WA, David Andrews of Clarkston, WA, and Dale Andrews of Lewiston, ID. His youngest sister, Carol Andrews LaFramboise, eldest brother Denton Denny Andrews, and parents Denver and Oleta Andrews preceded him in death. Bruce is also a wellloved uncle to his many nieces and nephews. The family would like to express their heartfelt thanks to all of the attending nurses and physicians of Oregon Health and Science University who worked tirelessly to help Bruce during his final days. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you contribute to St. Jude Children s Hospital in Bruce s name.

30 Precision Rifleman A Short & Sweet Goodbye It was a pleasure serving the benchrest community for the last several years. The members of NBRSA are indeed a fine bunch. I appreciate all your support and kind words that I ve received over the last years and especially the last few months as I move along into other endeavors. I thank you kindly for your patience with me as I learned the different aspects of this position. In particular, I want to call out Mustafa Bilal, who I drove absolutely nuts in the early days of this magazine by stretching the pictures and contorting the images. He took the time to help me with the software and always encouraged me to ask questions of his staff, since he s in the business. I know several of you were victims of my pictorial attacks, but no one criticized me at the time and patiently waited with forbearance until I figured stuff out. I remember that fondly in hindsight. I also want to thank all of you for your kindness. I cannot believe my good fortune in finding such a great bunch of A-Type personalities as there is in the benchrest crowd. You re an intense bunch for sure, but you always treated me with great courtesy and respect...despite my personal handicap of not ever firing a rifle shot which did not end up in a bloody scope bite. I thank you for that. There s also Wilbur Harris, who always had my back on the website CMS...(by the way, there are several updates for you and I left the conversion to next gen for you too. ha!) There are several great pals of Rod s and mine. If I miss you by name here, please know that it s early onset Alzheimer s on my part and not any deliberate disregard. The Colorado crowd: Tom & Bonnie Stiner, Dan & Rose Dowling, Truman Wilson, Bud & Judy Schalles, always made me feel more than welcome and encouraged me. The Montana crowd: Ryan Lienemann, Jeff Thompson, Paul Holland for being just all-around great guys. Dan Zaccanti from Washington I consider my pal. Don & Pat Deckert, who run the Porcupine range are quite the dynamic duo. Nothing stops these two. If you haven t had the chance to meet them, you should. My friends in Texas, John Horn, Matt Harris, Scott Hunter, Mike Conry and also my great boss, Dennis Thornbury. Best boss I ever had! (not a Texan, but I like him anyway). Most important is my awesome hubby, Rod who worked tirelessly behind the scenes for years without pay or complaint. I humbly thank you all.
