Dean Feltner explaned, "Someone brought up the dea that we should spend he money on lbrary or research facltes. AHEAD offers college accredtaton to volunteers whle servng n Army BY CAYLEN TCHENOR t used to be tha you had to make a choce. You could ether Jon the army or go to school. Today you can do both. The army offers a new program, Project AHEAD (Army Help for Educaton and Development), so that the volunteer can gel college credt whle n servce nstead of walng untl he gets out. The program, orgnally started at East Mchgan Unversty now ncludes 161 schools Eastern s one of three schools n he Lousvlle recrutng area whch s n charge of the project. The program works n ths way. One studer reports havng seen tw.nales rush out wth the money., Wthn two or three mnutes campus securty arrved at the scene to nvestgate the ncdent. Although questonng everyone n the grll at the tme of the theft to learn of any further evdence "no one gave any sgnfcant nformaton." sad Dr. Myers. Accordng to John R. Goolsby, Securty drector, current nvestgatons are beng conducted by securty and the Rchmond Cty Polce department. Goolsby-and Dr. Myers stressed the fact that f anyone had any nformaton concernng he ncdent to report t lo Securty and ther name would be kep n strct confdence. Myers felt confdent that the-theves - wo«r-*e apprehended.f tb*' '"denls on campus would gve Securty her full cooperaton. comes on campus to ntervew students. He blames the Placement Servce. Both students know that there s such a servce on campus that wll help students locate the job market. Many students are lke the second, however, and vew the Placement Servce as a place that gets you a job, not help you fnd one a job To locate the jobs avalable. John Vckers. head of the placement Offce sad, hey send out letters to companes who havebeen at Easern before and to blanket companes and nsttutons suggested by the heads of the depart ments, nvtng them lo come on campus. "Whether they respond or not s entrely up lo hem," sad Vckers. "You know, you can'l force people to accept an nvtaton." "We do have some companes and '.nsttutons who come annually to the campus." contnued Vckers. "After ther vst, they wll usually slop oy the offce and set up an appontment for next year or the next semester-on the schedule." Although many employers do work drectly through the Placement Offce. Vckers ndcated that - sometmes an employer wll wrte drectly lo the head of a department, slatng they have a vacancy and wsh lo ntervew (he n- (Con'nued on Page 12) student enrolls at Eastern for example and s assgned a counselor. Hs counselor there and the one at Eastern correspond so that the student wll take courses hat wll transfer. He can take as many classes as he wants or go to as many colleges as he wants. Accordng to Donna Black, Admssons counselor, all that s requred s that the "student must complete thrty of hs last graduaton hours n resdence at Eastern." The program can have defnte advantages, accordng lo Doctor Kenneth T. Clawson, Dean for Academc Servces, and "One of the bggest s money." The ' Army pays 75 percent of the tuton whle the student s enrolled at college and whle he s stll n the army. After he gets out of he army he gets what Dr. Cla wson referred lo as an eght thousand dollar scholarshp." The army s n favor of the program accordng to Dr. Clawson. One reason s that they hope that the student wll pck a course that can be used n the army. Dr. Clawson sad, "Some of these ndvdual! wll be pursung occupatonal o techncal degrees whch the army tself needs." Dr. Clawson sees the program pckng up. Two students have already enrolled here and Dr.* Clawson sees "relatvely few lo a hundred or maybe a thousand or more ndvduals". Dr. Clawson sad he was "lookng down the road a lttle ways" for the last fgure Although he Army started the program Dr. Clawson sad that Eastern s extendng the program to "nclude the Marne Corps, and the Ar Force." Project AHEAD s jusl one of the programs offered by Eastern for mltary personnel. t s part of a Specalzed Opportunty Program for those n the servce. The army s placng more and more emphass on educaton and as Dr. Clawson put t:'u's < pretty compellng.case."

Just slp note under the door descrbng the clothes and 'll leave the money. 'm the same grl who got $32 stolen from her a couple of weeks ago. Gve me a break." Shockng? Maybe. But t's happenng here wth ncreasng regularty. The collegate crooks are crawlng out from the woodwork to prey on ther unsuspectng, trustng neghtbors. n several of the women's. dorms, ncdents such as the one recountered above are takng place as grls leave ther clothes n the laundry room unattended and come back to fnd that they' are gone. Dorm rooms are beng vctmzed too. n one of the men's dorms, a resdent's wallet, contanng $23 was taken. - Upon nspecton; he found the wallet n the trash room, mnus the money. When he spread the word around that he planned to have hs wallet dusted for fngerprnts, a $20 bll was mysterously left under hs door. These are but two examples of a problem whch seems to be fast Socety's nterdependence has created demons called nflaton, depresson, recesson approachng epdemc proportons. Many of the thefts never appear on offcal records because students fal to report them to resdence drectors or campus Securty. But accordng to John Goolsby, Securty Specalst, reported thefts n dormtores are slghtly ahead of ths tme a year ago, despte tha fact that overall thefts are down. t would be futle to chde these plferers for ther llegal actvtes, but a few words of precauton. Lock your door, even f you plan to be gone only a few mnutes. Although t sounds cyncal, trust no one but your closet frends. Stay wth your clothes n the laundry rooms. t may seem to be a waste of tme, but won't be worth t to protect your possessons? Use that hour-and-a-half to catch up on your readng. f you don't have the tme to spare every week, work out a trade-off deal wth your frends. Do your laundry together and one week you watch t. They watch t the next. Granted, t wll take a lttle more tme, but we must practce preventon to counter the campus rpoffs whch are on the rse. Economc slump can't be conquered overnght An economc system s centered around human wants, and economsts study what the people want and tow to help ' them get t. An economst s a specalst, and specalzaton s where all our troubles began. Before the ndustral Revoluton there were relatvely few specalsts around. People were largely self-suffcent, makng and growng all they needed. But wth factores came specalzed jobs and people grew ncreasngly dependent on one another. One hundred years ago t wouldn't have especally mattered f a General Motors factory closed down. But today t affects thousands of people: the employes, dstrbuters, supplers, consumers, advertsers. Because of our nterdependence we have created demons called nflaton, depresson, and recesson. And the problem lacng the Unted States rght now s how to cure the nflaton that has swept the country. n essence, nflaton s a general and prolonged rse n prces. There are two types of nflaton: demand-pull and costpush. Demand-pull s caused by the rsng demand of the publc for goods. Ths pulls prces up n order to raton the supply. The rse n demand can be caused by more money n crculaton. Ths, n turn, s caused by the U.S. Treasury and the Federal Reserve System allowng the money supply to rse. n an era of propserty, such as the U.S. had durng the Vetnam War, Federal Reserve authortes were reluctant to slow down the money growth for fear of publc crtcsm. Letters to the Edtor : Dear Edtor. On behalf of the Marchng Maroons want to express our apprecaton to the admnstraton, faculty and student boyd for the excellent support they have gven us ths season. Needless to say, that rousng cheer at the begnnng and end of each show has made performng for you a joy rather than a chore ' want also to express my apprecaton for the fne coverage gven by the EASTERN PROGRESS to our shows. The many hours spent by each band member, some 150 per member, ths year, or a staggerng 23,250 man-hours by the total band represents a consderable outlay of tme and the recognton s apprecated. On a personal note, want to express my apprecaton to the members of the Marchng Maroons, the Maroon and Whte Maorette Corps and Flag Squad, the featured twrlers. Kandv Clav and Mke Allen and our Drum Majors. Mnda Thompson and Davd Zuercher for ther excellent cooperaton and unflaggng sprt and en- thusasm whch made the year happen. To the Lttle Colonels Drll Team goes, plaudts for ther contrcutons to the season's success. We shall be spendng our tme durng the off-season preparng for what we sncerely beleve wll be an even fner band n the 1975 season. f there are students who would lke to become a part of the 1975 Marchng Maroons, we urge you to contact us so we may nclude you n our plannng for next year. We look forward to a banner year for 1975 and want all members of the unversty communty to know that your contnued support s needed and chershed. Sncerely, Robert W. Hart well Drector of Marchng and Symphonc Bands Dear Edtor: n the November 14 edton of the Progress, Ms. Dana Taylor reported on a recent dcusson of CUC actvtes presented by Dean Lews to the Student Sentate. n ths talk. Dean A Treasury defct can also be a cause of demand-pull nflaton. When offcals decde to fnance a defct wth an ncrease 'n money supply, nflaton results. Wth cost-push nflaton, costs rse frst and push the prce of consumer goods upward. Labor costs under unons are a prmary cause of ths. The cost-push nflaton s accompaned by demand-pull. Ths s the stuaton former presdent Rchard Nxon tred to defeat, but couldn't. He set wage and prce controls, but undermned them by decreasng taxes at the same tme. Now Presdent Ford s faced wth the same dlemma-only on a larger scale. Ford s askng Amercans to qut spendng and start nvestng. Ths would cause the demand-pull to go down and economc growth through nvestment to go up. And ths would eventually lower the costpush as materals would be more readly avalable and cheaper to manufacture. True, t was government offcals who caused the nflaton n the frst place; frst by engagng n a wasteful war, and second by not reducng the money supply n a tme of prosperty. But Ford s sncere n hs efforts to set the economy straght. t can only be accomplshed f the Amercan people work, toward the standards Presdent Ford has set. The football vctory was phenomonal n that a clear cut team effort was used and needed to defeat a fred-upmorehead squad. Sacrfces had to be made by ndvduals and they were. Everett Talbert should be noted for the role he played. He ddn't get the 152 yards he needed to get the OVC record. However, "Poo-Loo" was such a threat that Morehead had three and sometmes four players wth hm everywhere he went. Ths allowed Jeff McCarthy (yes, Jeff McCarthy) to roam for over 130 yards. These are the knd of sacrfces t takes to make champons. Speakng of sacrfces, the volleyballers showed that volleyball s strctly a self-sacrfce sport. There are no sngle domnant forces n ths game. You must wn wth at least sx good players. Eastern's program has developed nne. Coach Ger Polvno uses eght to nne grls regularly and effectvely. They all are determned to wn. They dve on the floor for the ball. They applaud each other. They made the knd of sacrfces they needed to wn the tourney whch wll send them tooregonafter the natonal ttle. The 1974-75 edton of EKU basketball made a premer showng last Monday wth a 106-82 wn over Baptst College. The Colonels won wthout two of last season's starters. Jmmy Segar and Larry Blackford couldn't play due to llness and njury, respectvely. Fve freshmen played, wth four scorng n double fgures. Carl Brown showed the maturty and leadershp needed to help these freshmen along, wth sx asssts, 26 ponts, eght rebounds and lots of encouragement for the younger players. The Colonels dd not look that mpressve n the vctory. There s room for much mprovement. That says a lot when they \stll managed to wn by 24 ponts. f the basketball team mproves as they should and wll, they could add an OVC ttle to what already seems to be the "Year of the Champonshp" at EKU. Frst, the baseball team wns the fall OVC ttle, then football and volleyball come along. Naturally, swmmng wll wn ts far share ol trophes ths year. Many others have come close. Feld hockey and women's tenns both fnshed as state runnersup. The baseball team should wn the sprng ttle as well. Gymnastcs s favored to wn the state agan.
