Summary Extension activities by NETFISH along the maritime states of India during July 2015 consisted of 206 awareness programmes, which were comprised of 186 regular awareness classes (see Table 1), and 20 special programmes such as street plays (9 nos.), school children awareness programme (5 nos.), and 6 other special programmes (see Table 2). The regular awareness classes were attended by a total of 5273 beneficiaries whereas the special programmes were estimated to be beneficial for around 1583 stakeholders. Other activities during the month included a few meetings and discussions with the State Fisheries officials and stakeholders to resolve issues related to fish quality management and conservation of marine resources. The school programme on Conservation, sustainable fishing and fish quality management was conducted at Depal B.C. Vidyamandir at Purba Medinipur district. Four street plays have been conducted in a day at the fishing harbour, school & fishing villages of Purba Medinipur Dist. On 4 th July, the SCO had attended a seminar in the occasion on celebration of World Biodiversity Day organized by Ramnagar 1, Biodiversity Management Committee, Purba Medinipur at Hirapur Deshagram High School (H.S), Purba Medinipur where he delivered a presentation on World Biodiversity Day and its significances in ecosystem. A documentary film on Conservation of marine turtle and animation film on Conservation of fish was also shown in the seminar. A street play on Conservation, sustainable fishing and fish quality management was performed for the school students. In connection with Mud Crab Project at Purba Dwarikapur, South 24 Parganas a training programme to the women SHG was arranged on 25 th July 15. Thirty participants attended the programme during which culture practices of mud crab, collection of crab seeds and their identification, rearing, pond management were taught. 2. Odisha Bahabalapur 1 2 1 - - - - - Paradeep 6 1 4 - - - 1 - Chilka - 3 - - - - - 7 6 5 0 0 0 1 19 Extension programmes in Odisha during July included 18 regular programmes and a special programme. The programmes in connection with World Oceans day 2015 was arranged on 1 st July at Paradeep fishing harbour. boat crew members was carried out inside the harbour. After the rally a meeting was arranged inside the fishing harbour with the participation of State fisheries officials and trawler owners. NETFISH distributed T- shirts, Leaflets, Awareness stickers, etc during the programme. 3. Andhra Pradesh Kakinada 2 - - - - 2-4 Machilipatnam - - - - - - 5 5 Vizag 3 1 - - - - 1 5 Vodarevu 2 - - - - 2-4 7 1 0 0 0 4 6 18 In Andhra Pradesh, 12 regular programmes, 5 street plays and 1 other special programme were conducted during the month. From 28-30 July 2015, the 3 days training training programme on Moving towards Sustainable Fisheries jointly with CMFRI was organized at CMFRI, Vizag. On 6 th July the SCO participated in a Workshop on Deep sea fishing and delivered a presentation on Onboard handling of Tuna fish and distributed the translated Tuna training manuals to 75 participants. On the same occasion NETFISH distributed 200 PVC Shovels purchased from Fishermen Aid fund to the Presidents of 3 mechanized boat owners associations of Visakhapatnam fishing harbour to encourage the use of fiber shovels in place of iron shovels. The distribution was inaugurated by the Commissioner of Fisheries, who appreciated NETFISH s effort for avoiding the use of rusted shovels in the fishing industry. On 8 th July the SCO attended the meeting convened by the Dept. of Fisheries at Kakinada for the discussion on amending APMFR Act and Marine leasing policy. SCO NETFISH submitted the minutes of State level Workshop conducted on Sustainable fisheries to consider the suggestions from all the boat owners associations of AP. On 20 th July the SCO coordinated with MPEDA RO Vizag for the MPEDA Chaiman s meeting with Stake holders. 4. During July, 23 awareness programmes were conducted by NETFISH in Kasimedu, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Pazhaiyar, Pondicherry and Karaikal through member NGOs. A dry fish training for fisher women in Poombuhar fishing village was conducted in association with MSSRF, Fish for All Research and Training Centre, Poombuhar for creating awareness on preparing good quality dry fish for export. Also, a link between the trained group and exporters was also established. 5. Tamil Nadu South Ramanathapuram 5 4 1 - - 2-12 Thanjavur 4 4 2 - - - - 10 Tuticorin - - - - - - 2 2 9 8 3 0 0 2 2 24 Along Southern coastal regions of Tamil Nadu, 22 regular programmes and 2 special programmes (Fishermen Aid Programme) were conducted in July, 2015. Utilizing the Fishermen Aid Fund of NETFISH, plastic baskets were purchased and they were distributed among fishers at Taruvaikulam and Tsunami Colony in Tuticorin on 1 st and 3 rd July respectively. On 15 th July the SCO participated in the awareness meeting on IUU organized by SCO, Kerala South at Eryumanthurai. On 24 th July the SCO participated in the FIMSUL II project workshop on Hygienic Handling of Fishery resource and formation of Harbor Management Committee at Devipattinam, Ramanathapuram District and delivered a lecture on Hygienic handling of Marine resources in Landing centre and On Board and the Importance of Landing Centre Management Committee formation. 6. With regard to IUU fishing, a boat owners meeting was convened at 5 July 2015
Eryumanthurai on 15 th July. CE, NETFISH and SCO Tuticorin also attended the meeting. A meeting with boat owners was conducted at Thottappally and Kayamkulam for implementing square mesh cod end instead of diamond mesh cod end. At Vizhinjam, a meeting was held with AD- Fisheries and HED to discuss about the present condition of the harbour. A discussion was arranged with trawl net operators at Thoppumpady harbour about implementation of square mesh cod end. In Thoppumpady Fisheries harbour it was found that the parking area is completely damaged and electric ice crushers are not yet installed. A discussion with Port Officials was held to discuss these issues. The unauthorized peeling activity found inside Sakthikulangara harbour was brought to the notice of authorities concerned. 7. Kerala North Chettuva 7 - - - - - - 7 Ponnani - 5 - - - - - 5 Munambam - 2-8 - - 1 11 7 7 0 8 0 0 1 23 In July 2015, a total of 22 regular extension awareness classes were conducted along Kerala - North region. As a continuation of NETFISH s efforts for the popularization of square mesh cod end net among fishers, an awareness meeting was conducted for boat operators and associated people on 29 th July 2015 at Munambam. During the function, Sri K.N. Vimal Kumar, JD, MPEDA RO, Kochi displayed the modified square mesh cod end. The results of the square mesh experiments conducted by NETFISH were explained to the participants by the State Co-ordinator. Having convinced about the economic and ecological benefits of the square mesh cod end, more boat operators expressed their willingness to change to the square mesh cod end in this season itself. The modified cod end (having more length and inner space) was given to a trawl boat named Beena in the programme. The fishers requested NETFISH and MPEDA to provide more cod ends to the boat operators. 8. Extension activities in Karnataka during July included 8 awareness classes on conservation and sustainable fishing for the fishers. 9. Maharashtra Palghar - 16 - - - 4-20 0 16 0 0 0 4 0 20 In Maharashtra, 20 regular programmes were conducted during July, 2015. During the programmes, the SCO explained the participants about Slurry Ice Making unit and MPEDA subsidy schemes. Some of the Fishers have shown interest in purchasing Insulated Fish Boxes. Also the fishers were urged for the Conservation of important fishery resources like Pomfret and Lobster. Many fishers believe that the main reason for resource depletion is purse seine fishing. 10. Gujarat Mangrol 1 1 - - - - 2 4 Porbandar 2 2 - - - - - 4 Vanakbara 2 2 - - - - - 4 Veraval 3 3 - - - - 2 8 8 8 0 0 0 0 4 20 During the month 16 regular awareness classes and 4 school programmes were conducted at selected locations in Gujarat. The school programmes at Mangrol were organized on 14 th July at Parmesh High School and on 20 th July at Jignasha School which were attended by around 40 student of class 11 th & 8th. The President and members of Kharwa Samaj Boat Association were also invited to attend the programme. In Veraval, the programmes were conducted on 29 th at Bhidya Primary school and 30 th at Swaminarayan School, where around 48 student of standard 8 th and 50 student of standard 10 th took active participation. During the programmes the students, mostly belonging to fishermen community, were educated on marine ecosystem, sustainable fishing, their role in conservation of the marine environment etc. NETFISH posters & documentary film were also shown to them. On 6 th July the SCO along with president of B.A.Y.E.R.D.F.T met newly elected President of Boat Association of Porbandar and had a discussion on complete monsoon ban as well as the need to stop juvenile fishing. 7 July 2015
