You can blame the day-after-christmas blizzard for the tardiness, which Jen and I spent on a boat in New York City; think freezing hurricane. We opted for a smaller edition after the October and November editions went over 30 pages. Many thanks and best for 2011, Mo and Jen From the Commodore I wish all of our members and their families a wonderful New Year. It should certainly prove to be a busy and productive year at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. Several items of business were accomplished at the Board s first meeting in December. It s always important to recognize and renew the Lifetime Memberships of our Legacy Members. David Jennings Congratulations and thanks to Pat Murphy, Dave Bridges, Eddie Haug and the Bill Johnson Family. It s hard to add up all the years of service these people have given the club but it certainly represents more than a century of work. Newly honored with Lifetime Memberships are Ron Burney and Wanda Purzycki. One of the things each of these volunteers has in common is consistency. Visiting the club and helping with chores is part of their weekly schedule. Lastly, a Lifetime Membership was granted to Don St. Clair. Don is no longer a member but goes back to the Elmer Ball days (thus, Ballbusters) and he may not have been adequately recognized at that time. The merits for inclusion in this small group are a bit subjective but to make sure someone like Don St. Clair is not overlooked in the future, the BOD will work to define what it means to be a Legacy Member. When you see these people at the club please thank them for their diligent service to the Squadron. Our Memorandum of Understanding with Sarasota Youth Sailing Program has been finalized and signed by your Commodore and SYSP Chairman, Ken D Agostino. This is a fancy name for simply memorializing our relationship in writing. For as closely related as we are to this highly popular 501c3, there has never been a document generated between us defining our relationship. While this relationship will remain organic and ever changing the previous BOD felt it would benefit both groups to try and quantify how we benefit one another. This helps us see the value of the Squadron s participation in other non profit organizations and it will hopefully benefit the SYSP by illustrating the assets which have been made available for ongoing programs. This is the document which creates 2 SYSP Board positions for Squadron promoted participants. Those seats are currently held by David Hayes and Judy Saltzman. The BOD also accepted a proposal from Sue Forrest, Science Dept. Chair at Sarasota s Phoenix Academy. Using a SWFWMD grant, she would like to take over our planter boxes to use as a Florida Friendly Gardening project for 9 th and 10 th grade students. This is a wonderful collaborative project involving a State

The Burgee - November 2010 The planter grant, the Sarasota School District and the Sarasota Sailing Squadron. We will all have an opportunity to learn about what we should be planting and how we can improve the environment around the Club. Look for signs of action this spring and don t tell Ms. Forrest how much more of our p r o p e r t y w e m a y b e willing to let her kid s landscape! The 2011 Budget Proposal was circulated to all Board members. Treasurer Pam Paschall (pronounced rascal ) is taking feedback and the final budget will be a primary topic at the next Board meeting. You may recall outgoing Treasurer Michelle Lee gratefully provided a 2011 draft to Pam prior to the elections and we expect a smooth transition with not much change over the prior year. Since the Board meeting on December 14 th we have also ordered the installation of underground fiber optic cable which will support the installation of HD security cameras generously donated by member Nathan Needel, VP of Sales for Infinova. This fiber optic will have enough remaining capacity to allow future development on property possibly related to the main office, the SYSP office, the educational loft, gate operations and more. The security enhancement is necessary and the improvement in our infrastructure will pay dividends well in to the future. Rear Commodore, Bill Niblock convened a well attended Dock Committee meeting and we are on our way generating a project specification which will be put out to bid. The flavor is leaning toward replacing the main dock with a floating design in the existing foot print. This will make boats more accessible and bring a certain amount of installation & maintenance control back to the Squadron. Fleet Captain Sara Allan, Rear Commodore Bill Niblock, Mooring Committee members Jim Diener and Carol Anderson and I traveled to Temple Terrace for a Mooring Field Lease pre-application meeting with the Florida Department of Environmental Protection. Only time will tell but we felt the meeting went well. We are working with a new team which seems intent on getting it done. One comment from the FDEP indicates they feel any oversight is better than none at all. Ask any one of the members involved in this project since the late 90 s and they will tell you that feels like a breath of fresh air. By the time you read this a Selection Committee will be interviewing some of the final candidates for the General Manager position. We will be faced with an important decision soon but this does not stop Squadron business from moving forward now. One of the more important management tasks for December has been completed. The 2011 membership invoices have been sent. Please send your payment as soon as possible and let us know how you would like to spend your volunteer hours. I have said it before and I will say it again we need your active participation at the Sarasota Sailing Squadron and look forward to seeing you there soon. The Burgee - January 2011 Flying Scot Fleet 36 By Bob Twinem We are back to racing with our winter friends and the 2010-2011 season is in full swing. After the huge fleet came and went at the November district regatta, we had our first race of our local fleet 36 season towards the end of November. Chuck Tanner and Jim Mumsford showed superb race committee capabilities and ran 3 beautiful races for our local fleet. Before the races they ran a few practice starts so that we could get the kinks out then let us go for 3 races. As usual the racing was tight with multiple lead changes. The three races were won by 3 different boats, with Leprechan, Eightball and the Grey family boat winning the 3 races. John, Susan and family showed incredible skill and seamanship by configuring their crew weight for the conditions. Never have we seen a Scot go so fast with crew bouncing from lap, to shoulders, to below decks, all the while keeping a close tabs on the strategy of corralling the rest of the fleet. It was good to see Mike, Nick, Andy and Christina back from far and wide to join us again. This race date showed that the way to improve speed and tactics is to spend time in the boat. Both teams of Tom and Winny and Peter and Robin have spent a lot of time sailing the past several months and it is showing in their bursts of speed, sail handling and brilliance in tactics. The weather for racing in December has been very iffy for Scot racing. We were scheduled to RC on Dec 12. I managed to get to the club along with Ted and Ted but no one else!!! After standing around for a few minutes watching the weather roll in I realized why people stayed home. The sight of the 45+kts gusts blasting through the anchorage was quite awe inspiring. Very glad not to be out on a Scot during the blast let alone a whaler! Ron, Barry and the Domagalas ventured to Jacksonville for the Florida District Regatta. They report that they enjoyed sailing in a different venue and catching up with friends from afar. Conditions were COLD and a little blustery. Results are at the FSSA.com web site. As this issue comes out the time is nearing for the Flying Scot Midwinter Regatta. We are well on our way to planning for this event where we expect 60 or so boats. There are tons of sailors throughout the country that have let us know that they are coming to enjoy all that Sarasota has to offer. We are looking forward to seeing you all out on the bay. Lastly if you have a Scot for sale or if you are looking to buy one, let us know. Tip of the day: When coming off the starting line it is better to come off the line with speed than less speed and pointing high. Only after you are at max speed should you think about pointing. Floating marks that are missing should be reported to : Kirk Burnett @ 544-6630 & the SSS office @ 388-3855 As soon as possible Page 4

New Business: Discussion regarding a letter Kacey Knope received from Commodore Pressman revoking his membership for violation of club procedures with regard to boat usage. Discussion ensued and the final decision was that no violation of the policy was established and that the proper process for revoking his membership was not followed; therefore, the letter Kacey received had no effect with regard to his membership revocation. The process is in our ByLaws. Discussion also ensued regarding Policies as they relate to Standing Rules and ByLaws. Policies may need greater clarification. The Burgee - January 2011 December Ballbusters By Pat Murphy SQUADRON DATE 112410: Last Wednesday Work Party in November and the day before Thanksgiving. Fortunately a bunch of members showed up today with Ron & Don continuing the replacement of blocks and line at the BBQ with stainless blocks and new 1/8 th inch line. As usual they did not finish the project due to time constraints and cold and very windy weather. I helped add some more stainless eyes at the end of the line. And, as usual, will have to get more to complete the job. Dennis O Brien and Carl Meyers did a small ramp dock repair by raising a cross member underneath the decking and re-nailing it to the piling. It has lasted 30 years, but the entire structure should be replaced far before the next 30 years occurs. They also gassed the boats and picked up yard trash in the YSP areas to the south. Tom Fronczak raked up sea weed and then picked up trash in the trailer boat area and disposed of a cut up catamaran hull with the aid of Commodore David Jennings who previously had helped me carry a couple of tables into the clubhouse for serving tomorrow. Wanda, as usual came early and stocked the bar with the aid of Larry MacMillian who had helped Tom with the sea weed detail. Gerd Boysen wiped down the tables & chairs on the porch, pavilion and deck areas and was helped by Larry MacMillian who seemed to float to where he could do the most good. Rob Barnette freed up the four rusted casters on the aluminum tray rack that has spent the last two years exposed to the weather in the BBQ area and then worked on fixing several oars. Chris Ranney, our new Social Coordinator, and Walter Wyatt took care of the kitchen and the preparation of the turkeys for tomorrow. Chris marinated 15 birds in a marinade overnight and will, along with Walter, begin the cooking tomorrow. I, after organizing most things, and helping some, went to the LTM store in Ringling Shopping Center and bought 3 rolls of plastic table cloth after we discovered that we had none in our kitchen store room. SQUADRON DATE 120110: Our first real cold front of the year came through about 5 AM this morning with some rain but a huge number of acorns falling on the roof at home and bouncing off the air conditioners outside making very disturbing noises that put the fear of something in my poodle Noel. At the Squadron some chairs were blown into the water and retrieved along with a donated fiberglass dock box and 5 empty yellow diesel containers with 3 (and one more later) being recovered by Dennis O Brien, Alan Titcombe, Nelson and possibly Dave Jennings, our new Commodore, who also replanted 2 pilings out back and pulled out some Brazilian Peppers. Some of the furniture in the Pavilion was turned upside down, chairs and one plastic topped table which fortunately did not land on its top came to rest on a plastic chair and thus avoided breaking. Replacement tops several years ago were about $100.00, I don t know what they cost today. I arrived at the Squadron a bit later than usual as I overslept, however, Wanda was already there with coffee brewing and Ron was pulling into the parking area as I got out of my car. Gerd Boysen helped Wanda stock the bar and then separated and checked out multiple strings of lights that we later hung on the porch with the help of Ron and Alan Titcombe. Ron & Don emptied out 3 storage lockers in the south rack building of Christmas, Halloween and Easter decoration and fortunately one Christmas tree. We had two Christmas trees last year and could only find one of them but no lights or any other kind or Christmas tree decorations. We found several empty plastic storage boxes labeled Xmas on top of the Walk- In but nothing else. There were bunches of lights of all sorts last year but no longer. I can t imagine why they were discarded as they still worked (most items have since been found). Dennis O Brien checked the gas in the boats and pulled staples out of several pilings along the walkway and on the Main Dock Deck. Chuck & Ruth Nordman helped Wanda for a while and then along with Dave Bridges drove around in the Golf Cart and picked up palm fronds, etc, that were probably blown down last night. I left about 11:30 and went to Sarasota Hardware to pick up more stainless hardware so we can finish off the BBQ properly. SQUADRON DATE 120810: A day that started out very cold with absolutely no Ballbusters showing up early. Alan Titcombe was the first Ballbuster or live body to arrive just after 9 AM. After a warm up by the roaring fire we went outside to look at the prime project for the day, the wood holding the aluminum ramp leading to Big Ben had broken and the ramp fell down to the DON T SELL YOUR BOAT GIVE IT TO THE KIDS! The Burgee - November 2010 floating dock underneath. Fortunately Nelson had already worked out what he wanted to do and bought the stainless bolts and lags and Alan and Rob Barnette helped him do it with Nelson doing most of the work. In the meantime the Nordman s arrived with Ruth doing Wanda s job at the bar and Chuck cleaning the ramp of piles of seaweed. Bob Armstrong completely stocked the fireplace area with wood and then dug out a too short piling and replaced it with a much larger one in the Handicapped Parking Space that is easier to see. Al also lubricated a bolt lock on the BBQ pit with Zep. Walt discovered that a relatively large 3 deep kitchen pan that he had used on Thanksgiving was AWOL. Walt and I spent nearly an hour talking with David Jennings about how we could make some additional money for the Squadron at the Boat Parade on Saturday. We ll see what happens. SQUADRON DATE 121510: The coldest day of the year so far. When I arrived a bit after 7 AM Wanda was already there and doing her usual work. Tom Fronzack got there next and took several gas cans down to Marine Max for fuel for our fleet of motor boats. Ruth Nordman helped Wanda stock the bar and then began cleaning things that needed to be cleaned in the clubhouse while Chuck attacked the dirt on the perpetual trophies that line the mantle piece. Dennis Dudley, a new member, got the job of cleaning all the dirt and grime off an expensive grill ($750), a hamburger press, that we have had since 1987. There was so much stuff there that it took all morning just to do the job. Vinnie Algozino picked up yard trash blown down by this weeks high winds and then got the seaweed by the ramp also while Alan Campbell weed-eated between the trailer boats. Alan Titcombe, one of our dependable Ballbuster s, helped me do temporary repairs to one of the plastic curtains on the BBQ with the sailor s friend, duct tape, and then helped me find and carry lost xmas decorations from the storage lockers, and then helped Wanda finish the decorations on our Christmas Tree. Stu Barnette extracted more staples from our numerous piling and then raked up sea weed with Vinnie which they spread underneath the vegetation outside of the fence. I left a bit after 11 AM and went to Sarasota Hardware store for red & green party bulbs which we use for our Port & Starboard lights at the Entrance Gate. Ron Birney hasn t been here for several weeks as he had an operation to remove his gall bladder Tuesday before last. He went home the next day but felt sick and returned to the hospital and had 3 more operations before he was able to go home today. Since then he s back in the Hospital and now they think he has an infection in his Pancreas, And last but not least, Dave Jennings after his first Board Meeting last night was here early for the Work Party and did what he does a lot at home, trim bushes that need it. The Burgee - January 2011 Racing News By Bob Miller, Race Captain First, I want to thank all our racing & cruising sailors for coming to our December Sailing Awards dinner. We had 80 or more members and guests enjoy some terrific food, fun and just a great time. Forty-four awards were distributed to SSS sailors who participated in many of the 40+ sailing events that were offered at the Squadron during the past year. The Commodores at the Helm race had ten past commodores either onboard a ship or enjoying a chat onshore with our members. We had chili and chips for those who participated and Commodores at the Helm T-shirts were distributed to the Past Commodores and those SSS Captains that donated their time and vessel to make this event happen. On Sunday December 12 th, we decided to cancel the Sailmonster BOTY Pursuit race as a front with 45+ knot winds were passing thru the Squadron at about 12:30pm. We are rescheduling this race for Sunday January 9 th, 2011. Weather permitting we will have two races and they both will be counted for the BOTY standings. The following events are scheduled for January: Sunday, Jan. 9th, Sailmonster BOTY Pursuit race (2 races possible.) Saturday, Jan. 22nd, Snowbird Regatta. Shape-up and Ship Out Marathon Series will begin in February. Earn your Squadron Marathon T- Shirt when you complete at least 26.5 miles over a three month period. Details with courses and simple rules will be out shortly. Enjoy the Squadron and come on out to the Starting Line. Fireside Chat With New Board Gather at the squadron on Jan. 23rd at 3pm for an informal, casual opportunity to meet and chat with the new board. Refreshments and snacks provided by the club. Bloody Mary Hangover Regatta Snapshots The Burgee - November 2010 The Annual Hangover Regatta is almost as much of a squadron institution as the Labor Day Regatta. It has been held in some of the worst weather and in good weather; it has had as many as fifty competitors in numerous classes and some of the most totally classless sailboats ever seen on Sarasota Bay. This year it was gloomy weather, chilly and blowing like a stink. One of the E Scows didn't even leave the dock because of broken gear. There were three intrepid kids in prams getting yanked all over the bay under marginal control, some small cruisers and some pretty high-energy multihulls. Photos courtesy of Mike Holahan Page 13

The Burgee - January 2011 Who s Who by Vaile Scott * * * Jim and Nathalie Diener returned to their hometown, Cleveland, Ohio after Jim was discharged from the Air Force in 1958. Jim accepted a j o b a s a n e n g i n e e r w i t h Lincoln Electric Corp., a major manufacturer of arc welding equipment. They were ready to settle down to raise their family. For recreation and sport the couple decided to take up sailing. They joined the Mentor Harbor Yachting Club on Lake Erie east of Cleveland. Jim began racing Lightnings and Nathalie joined the club s women s group called the, Wet Hens. The Hens raced Thistles and Nathalie eventually became Commodore of the group. As Nathalie observed the group s name would no doubt be inappropriate in todays s world. The couple soon developed their sailing skills and began racing International 21 One Designs, called I- 21's for short. The Dieners recall there were twenty-one I-21's on the starting line every Sunday for twenty-one years. Jim and Nathalie were not in want of sufficient crew. Their four children all raced with them from time to time and eventually became expert sailors on their own. At one point Jim built a special foot rest in the cockpit so his small daughter could brace herself while hiking. Their eldest daughter once received some publicity for rescuing a disabled power boat and towing it to shore with a sail boat. Another Nathalie story: One of their fellow I-21 skippers with some fame nationally for his racing prowess would sit on the bottom of his boat with a beer in one hand, the tiller in the other and single-handedly consistently win races. One time Nathalie felt bold enough to ask him how he did it. What s the secret? Oh! Nathalie, he said, It s very easy, you just get out in front and stay in front. Our next venture was to organize a J-24 fleet at Mentor Harbor with a friend of ours. Jim said, We raced J-24's for twelve years starting with a 1978 and moving up to an 86. Jim retired from Lincoln Electric around 1996 after forty-one years and they started coming down to Florida. We started coming down to St. Pete s Beach fairly regularly so we sold the J-24 and we bought an SR Max because we got to know Glen Henderson the designer. Jim explained. The Max is a 21-foot performance boat which Nathalie described as a crazy boat. Her reason, in part, was because the four and a half foot retractable keel was very difficult to retract for placing on a trailer. As a result Jim designed a trailer with removable high bunks which could be installed for launching and storage in a marina and low bunks for hauling the boat back and forth to Cleveland. He also encouraged Henderson to design an asymmetrical spinnaker for the SR Max which made it much easier for two handed crews to jibe the chute. He then worked with a tool maker friend to build the tooling to make the nose cone for the bowsprit. From St. Pete s the Dieners migrated to Longboat Key and joined the Sailing Squadron about twelve years ago. They sold the SR Max after racing it for four or five years and went without a boat for a year. But as Jim says, Performance boats are addictive, and we ve always liked multi-hulls. So after some deliberation about size and model they decided to buy a Corsair F-28 R (the R stands for racing model) because it sailed equally as well in Sarasota Bay and Lake Erie. The first time we went on this boat, Nathalie exclaims, I was on the helm and the knot meter got up to 18. (Jim says 18.6) They both agree that they have reached 22 knots downwind a couple of times. The one bit of remorse Nathalie expresses is when they had smaller boats they could only take two children at a time. Now that they have a larger boat they have no children, they Page 14

The Burgee - November 2010 are all adults and live on both coasts of the U.S. with their children. Bareboat chartering is one of their cherished pastimes. They have chartered boats in the Virgin Islands, Belize, the Bahamas and the Northwest around Vancouver Island. Nathalie recalls, One memorable passage was a 149 nm overnight from Isle Royale in Lake Superior to Grand Marais, Michigan on a Gozzard 36 sailboat. After sailing in many parts of the world, sailing out of the Sarasota Sailing Squadron is their favorite venue. In addition to racing Jim has spent many volunteer hours with the Ball Busters on Wednesdays and Saturdays at the Squadron. He says he almost grew up in the kitchen and he still likes to cook so he had helped Danny with the Thanksgiving Turkeys for several years. This year he helped Walt cook fifteen birds. Jim is also co-chairman of the Mooring Management Plan sub-committee with Jim Nickle.
