Starter Jordan Zimmermann (W, 4-2) threw 6.0 innings and allowed four earned runs on seven hits with one walk and six strikeouts. Balmore jumped out to a 3-0 lead on a two-run homer by Chris Davis in the 1st inning and an RBI single by Seth Smith in the 2nd. J.D. Marnez erased the deficit with one swing of the bat, launching a three-run homer in the 3rd inning off Dylan Bundy. The Orioles briefly took a one-run lead on a solo homer by Adam Jones in the 5th inning. But the Tigers answered back again with three runs in the bo om half of the 5th, including a two-run homer by Victor Marnez and an RBI double by Alex Avila. Shane Greene threw 1.2 perfect innings in relief and Alex Wilson filled in for his second save of the season. ELIAS SAYS: On Thursday a!ernoon, J.D. Marnez and Victor Marnez both homered off Dylan Bundy in the Tigers 6 5 victory over the Orioles. It was the 16th me that the Marnez s homered in the same game for Detroit. Only two pairs of teammates who shared the same last name homered in the same game as o!en as J-Mart and V-Mart: Andruw and Chipper Jones (59 mes), and Brooks and Frank Robinson (24 mes). HOT HOT HEAT: Righ"ielder J.D. Marnez, who returned from the 10-day DL last Friday a!er missing the first 33 games of the season with a right midfoot sprain, blasted a game-tying three-run homer in the 3rd inning yesterday to get the Tigers back in the game. It was his fi!h long ball since being acvated from the DL, making him first American League player to hit at least five home runs in his first six games of a season since Tampa Bay s Evan Longoria in 2009 (also 5 HR in first 6 G). The last Major League player to do so was Colorado s Trevor Story, who hit seven homers in his first six games in 2016. Overall, J.D. is sporng a ridiculous 2.118 OPS through six games this season (.680 OBP, 1.438 SLG, 5 HR, 9 BB in 25 PA). I WAS RUNNING!: Despite having Miguel Cabrera, J.D. Marnez, Ian Kinsler and Jose Iglesias each miss mulple games with injuries this season, the Tigers currently rank third in the American League in runs per game (4.92, 192R/39G), trailing only the Yankees (5.79) and Astros (5.15) in that category. Detroit also ranks ed for second in the AL in triples (9), T-third in doubles (70), fourth in OPS (.751), walks (154) & extrabase hits (126), and fi!h in OBP (.330) and SLG (.421). LET S MESS WITH TEXAS: The Rangers landed in Detroit last night riding a nine-game winning streak, the longest acve streak in MLB. They also have an acve six-game winning streak at Comerica Park dang back to August 21, 2015, where they ve also won eight of their last nine meengs with the Tigers. In those nine games at Comerica, Texas has outscored Detroit, 58 to 24 (-34, -3.78 RPG). EYES OF THE NATION: This weekend, the Tigers will play back-to-back games against the Texas Rangers on naonal television. Saturday s game will be aired by FOX, with Jusn Kutcher and C.J. Nitkowski (Brad Ausmus former teammate) calling the first pitch at 7:15 p.m. ET. On May 21st, the two clubs will do ba le on ESPN s Sunday Night Baseball, beginning at 8:05 p.m. ET. The Baseball Tonight crew will also broadcast live from Comerica Park from 7:00-8:00 p.m ET. Addionally, MLB announced yesterday that ESPN has selected the Tigers-Red Sox game on June 11th for Sunday Night Baseball (also 8:05 p.m. ET). NOTES ON THE SKIPPER: Brad Ausmus is in his fourth season at the helm for the Tigers. He enters tonight s game with a 270-253 (.516) record as DET s manager.
