BOSTON RED SOX (71-90) vs. NEW YORK YANKEES (83-78) Sunday, September 28, 2014 1:35 p.m. ET Fenway Park, Boston, MA RHP Clay Buchholz (8-10, 5.31) vs. RHP Michael Pineda (4-5, 1.93) Game #162 Home Game #81 TV: NESN/TBS Radio: WEEI 93.7 FM, WCCM 1110 AM (Spanish) GAME 162: Today the Red Sox conclude the 2014 season with the last of a 3-game set against NYY at Fenway Park. Boston opens the 2015 regular season 190 days from today, on 4/6 at PHI...It will be the club s first regular season opener in Philadelphia since 1954, the last year that city had an AL franchise (Athletics). YESTERDAY S WIN: The Red Sox defeated the Yankees yesterday, 10-4...It evened Boston s final series of the year at 1-1 entering today s season finale. Joe Kelly started and earned the win, going a careerhigh 7.1 IP...He allowed 4 runs, all in the 8th inning, but 2 scored after he left the bases loaded and 1 out. Boston jumped out to a 9-0 lead with 8 runs (4 unearned) in the 2nd inning, the club s largest output in any frame this season. The Sox sent 14 men to the plate in the 2nd, their most in any inning since 4/13/12 vs. TB (14 in the 8th inning). CALL-UPS PRODUCING: Yesterday marked Boston s 4th straight game starting 6 rookie position players...in that time, those starters have gone a combined 34-for-89 (.382) with 17 R, 7 2B, 3 HR, 14 RBI, 10 BB. On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, the Sox also started a rookie pitcher, and the club s 7 total rookies in the starting lineup (including pitcher) were their most since 10/3/87, an 8-4 loss vs. MIL. Before Wednesday, the club hadn t won a game when starting as many as 7 rookies since 10/2/80, a 4-1 win over TOR (Source: Elias Sports Bureau). ROOKIE FIGURES: The Red Sox have had 19 different rookies play in a game this season, tied with Arizona for 2nd most in the majors behind only Texas (23)...This is the 4th-highest rookie total in team history and the Sox most since 1926 (21 rookies). RED SOX SEASONS, MOST ROOKIES APPEARING YEAR(S) ROOKIES 1911 25 1925 22 1926 21 2014 19 1928, 1952 18 The Red Sox have had 8 rookies to go deep in 2014, a new single-season club record...boston previously had 7 rookies homer 3 times: 1952, 1987, and 1996. SOX STATUS: The Sox have won 3 of their last 4 games, 4 of their last 6, and 5 of 8...The club has lost 11 of its last 19 games but is 15-16 (.484) Beginning on 8/25...Since the All-Star break, Boston has a 28-38 record (.424). The Sox are 19 games under.500 (season high is 21)... They are 24.0 games back in the AL East (season high is 26.5). Boston will finish in last place for the 2nd time in 3 years (also 2012), but were 2013 World Series Champions. SCORING SUMMARY: The Red Sox have scored 629 runs this season for an average of 3.91 runs per game...both of those rank 12th out of the 15 AL teams, up from last place as recently as this past Tuesday...In 4 games since then, Boston has scored an ML-high 34 runs, the club s most in any 4-game stretch this season. The Sox reached double-digits in runs in 3 of those last 4 contests after entering doing so just 5 times in the first 157 games of the year. Boston is 35-17 (.673) when tallying at least 10 hits, and 56-25 (.691) when scoring at least 4 runs. LOWDOWN ON LANSDOWNE: Today s game, the last of 3 against the Yankees (1-1 thus far), concludes a seasonending 6-game homestand...the Sox opened the stand winning 2 of 3 against Tampa Bay. The Red Sox, who went 37-44 (.457) on the road, will finish better away from Fenway Park than at home, where they have won 34 of 80 games (.425) thus far. Boston s 9 walkoffs this year account for 26% of the team s 34 home wins...the club is 1 shy of the AL lead (CLE, LAA, and OAK each have 10 walkoffs). SOX AND YANKS: This is the last of 6 sets between these clubs, the 3rd at Fenway Park...The Sox are 7-11 vs. NYY this season, guaranteed just their 2nd losing campaign against the Yanks in the last 7 years, 2008-14 (2012, 5-13). The 2014 Postseason will be the 1st without the Red Sox and Yankees since 1993, the pre-wild Card era. NO. 2 AT FENWAY: Derek Jeter enters today with 152 career games at Fenway Park, including regular and postseason...if he plays today, Jeter will pass Lou Gehrig and Mickey Mantle (152 each) for the most ever by a Yankee. Including regular and postseason, Jeter is the alltime Yankees leader in at-bats (659) and PA (726) at Fenway...Gehrig ranks 2nd in both (570 AB, 705 PA). Jeter has made 139 regular season starts at Fenway Park at shortstop during the regular season, 2nd most all-time among all visitors here to Luke Appling s 151. INK IN THE PEN: Despite ranking 9th overall in the AL in team ERA (3.98), the Red Sox bullpen has posted a 3.25 ERA which is good for 5th in the league. Sox relievers have totaled 489 appearances this year, tying the 2012 squad for the most in club history. CHRISTIAN S CANNON: Christian Vazquez has thrown out 15 of 29 attempted base stealers, a 52% success rate... That would be the best single-season mark in club history among catchers with at least 15 games behind the plate. No rookie with at least 50 games behind the plate has ever posted a single-season catcher caught stealing rate this high...the last major leaguer overall to do it was STL s Yadier Molina in 2005 (55%; 17 CCS, 14 SB). UNPRECEDENTED PATIENCE: Boston leads MLB with 4.05 pitches seen per PA, which would be the highest rate for any ML team as far back as data exists (starting 1988)... The mark currently belongs to the 1994 Tigers (4.03). CLOSE & LATE: Boston has played an AL-high 56 one-run games this year (28-28), 14 more than last year (42, 21-21) and the team s most since 1978 (57)...Their 28, one-run wins are T-2nd in the AL, trailing only the Orioles (31). The Sox have played 21 extra-inning games this year (10-11), tied for the most in MLB with 4 other teams (CLE, MIA, OAK, PHI)...This is the most extra-inning games for Boston since 1966 (22 games, 6-16 record). PAPI IS BIG: With 35 home runs (T-5th in AL) and 104 RBI (6th in AL), David Ortiz has his 8th season with at least 30 homers and 100 RBI, all since joining the Red Sox in 2003...That sets a new franchise record for most career 30-HR/100-RBI seasons, passing Ted Williams, who had 7. Despite having not played since Tuesday, no other AL player this season has driven in a higher percentage of his team s runs than Ortiz (16.5%, 104 of 629), who ranks 2nd in MLB...ATL s Justin Upton leads the majors at 17.9% (102 of 571). YOUNG BOGEY AND BETTS: Boston s 21-year-old rookies Mookie Betts & Xander Bogaerts, have combined to hit.319 (65-for-204) with 36 runs, 20 XBH (13 2B, 3B, 6 HR), and 25 RBI in the team s last 26 games beginning on 8/31.
