KIN 100 Intro to Dance Course Syllabus Instructor: Donna Wilson Office Location: Davies 118 Office Phone: 453-3123 E-Mail: dmwilson@siu.edu Office Hours: M & W: 9:30-11:30 a.m. MTWR: 12:30-1:00 p.m. Description The course will introduce the student to basic body mechanics and alignment. The class will cover dance warm-up exercises shared by the performance art dance styles ballet, jazz and modern. Students will be taught the basic locomotor skills, basic dance steps as well as simple moving combinations shared by ballet, jazz, modern dance and tap. The class will focus on giving the student a foundation in the basic movements of these dance styles, and prepare the student for further study in dance. Course Objectives A. The student will develop skills in basic body mechanics as relates to basic dance skills B. The student will develop skills in basic locomotor steps as performed in dance C. The student will develop skills in basic dance steps D. The student will be able to identify and define dance vocabulary covered in class E. The student will be able to identify the elements of dance Tentative Method of Evaluation: Attendance & Participation Skill Written Tests (2 @ 50 pts.) Concert Attendance & Critique 35 pts. Attendance & Participation: Attendance and participation is required. Attendance grades will be computed by the following point system: (Each absense is worth 10 points.) # Of unexcused absences Points (Grade) 1 (no pts deducted) 100 (A) 2 90 (A) 3 80 (B) 3 tardies = 4 70 (C) 1 absence 5 60 (D) 6 50 (F) An absence will be excused with documentation of (1) an illness, (2) a death in the family, (3) advance notice of a university sponsored trip or (4) advance notice of a religious holiday, (5) court day. The student is responsible for obtaining the appropriate documentation. Be on time for proper warm-up. Arriving late is not only rude under all circumstances, it is also counterproductive for the dancer. Warm up exercises are designed to be performed in a carefully regulated progression in order to warm up the body preparing you physically and mentally for activity. You are also training in proper technique so that you will be dancing safely and properly later in class. Arrival to class 15 or more minutes late will be counted as a tardy. If you are late, please ask permission to join the class. Any significant tardy or early departure from class will be figured as an absence. A student arriving late to class might not be allowed to participate that day, but will be allowed to observe. The student is responsible for checking in with the instructor at the end of class on the day they are tardy or run the risk of being counted absent. Students are encouraged to observe class if they are injured or recovering from an illness. In order to receive credit for your presence you must sit at the front of the class and take notes and record evaluations of the class. You must show your notes to the instructor immediately after the class. Active participation in a minimum of 60% of the classes is required for a passing grade in the course. I.E.: A student observing and/or absent (excused or not) for 10 or more classes receives an F in the course. Written Tests Written tests will cover the vocabulary, handouts, and any class lectures. Make-up tests will be given only in cases of documented excused absences and will be given at your instructor's convenience. 2

Concert Attendance You are required to attend the Southern Illinois Dance Company (SIDC), and to write a concert evaluation. You must turn in your program and ticket stub for the concert to document your attendance. The evaluation paper will be discussed in class. See your class schedule for the date. In summary you are required to: 10 pts. 1. see the (SIDC) concert 25 pts. 2. write an evaluation the above concert. Dress 1. Clothing that reveals the bodyline and allows freedom of movement is required. 2. Some type of dance shoe is strongly recommended. (Ballet, Jazz, Modern sandals or dance paws) 3. Leotards and tights are strongly recommended. 4. Jazz pants are acceptable. 5. Biker shorts or running tights are acceptable. 6. Bras for women and dance belts or athletic support for men are recommended. 7. Snug fitting sweatpants and a T-shirt tucked in at the waist are acceptable. 8. Hair must be up and out of face 9. No dangling jewelry allowed. 10. No baggy T-shirts, baggy cover-ups, skirts, hats, or sunglasses are allowed. 11. Please no Street shoes on the dance floor. This means any shoe you have worn outside. Skill There will be a skill test at the end of the semester covering class material. Dance skill grades will be based on the following general guidelines: 5-Accomplished a. Demonstrates the mastery of dance skills covered in class and has the ability to execute steps and dances with little or no conscious effort resulting in no errors. b. Proper rhythm maintained at all times. c. style and technique are maintained throughout the performance. d. Correct footwork, and arm placement at all times. 4-Good a. Demonstrates competency in dance skills covered in class and the ability to execute steps and dances making only one or two errors. b. The mistakes or hesitations are minor and not enough to throw others off in the case of group work. c. Rhythm, style and technique are consistent with one or two errors. I.e.: use of the wrong hand or foot 3-Adequate a. Displays ability to perform the basic dance skills, but performance is inconsistent with several errors. b. Hesitates often, but continuity of steps or dance is never fully broken. c. May be cued or led by others in dance once. d. Rhythm, styling and technique are inconsistent with several errors. 2-Developing a. Demonstrates inability to perform more than the basic steps or dances. b. Performance is inconsistent with many errors and hesitations. c. Performance is cued or led by others in the dance more than once. d. May cause a break down of the dance. e. Demonstrates little understanding of rhythm, style or technique. 1-Needs Work a. Demonstrates little understanding of the steps or dances. b. Makes frequent and significant errors. c. Demonstrates little or no understanding of rhythm, style and etiquette. d. Performance is cued or led by others throughout the dance. 0-Inadequate a. Dance is not performed. It is evident that the student does not know the dance. 4

Classroom Etiquette, Safety, and Tardiness Be on time for proper warm-up. If you are late, please ask permission to join the class. No gum chewing during class. No street shoes on the dance floor Cell phones, MP3 players, etc must be turned OFF during class. Equipment 1. Notebook to keep assignments and handouts 2. Towel and water bottle (optional) Note on Risk: Participating in a Physical Education activity class involves risks of physical injury. Students are responsible for obtaining appropriate medical approval to participate in physical activity that is considered to be normal and customary for the course in question. The student is also responsible for making the instructor aware of any medical limitations she/he may have with respect to the physical activity in question. The student shall also make the instructor aware if medical conditions (including pregnancy) or complaints develop after the start of the course. Emergency Procedures: Southern Illinois University Carbondale is committed to providing a safe and healthy environment for study and work. Know how to respond to each type of emergency. Instructors will provide guidance and direction to students in the classroom in the event of an emergency affecting your location. It is important that you follow these instructions and stay with your instructor during an evacuation or sheltering emergency. The Building Emergency Response Team will provide assistance to your instructor in evacuating the building or sheltering within the facility. We will go into the hallway by the classrooms 5
