In return, the supporting sponsors will have the opportunity to act as a charitable neighbor to hundreds of children and many needy families as well as reach over 36,000 college age students and 10,000 faculty and staff members who work on the New Brunswick/ Piscataway campuses of Rutgers University. There is neither a registration fee nor a requirement to raise funds. Instead participants are asked to bring a new toy for a child between the ages of 3 and 14. Inaugural Year The Big Chill is a 5K race that was conducted for the first time on December 13th, 2003. Over 1,040 students, faculty and staff of Rutgers University and citizens from the surrounding communities enthusiastically embraced the event. The number of participants far exceeded all expectations, and the event was considered an enormous success. Participation The participant level is now 7 times what it was in the first year. In 2014, over 8,000 people between the ages of 13 and 78 walked or ran through the streets of New Brunswick early on Saturday morning in order to bring toys to children who live in housing provided by the City of New Brunswick and several charities in central New Jersey. The Big Chill has become the largest 5K race in New Jersey in only 10 years and is considered by many to be one of the best conducted races in the tri-state area. Toys Collected in 2014 Over 10,000 toys were collected on Race Day. We exceeded our first year s total by more than 6,000. They were wrapped by 250 volunteers the following Monday and sent to the administrative offices of the New Brunswick Housing Authority, the Franklin Housing Authority, The Salvation Army of Bound Brook, NIA Community, Emmaus House, St. Vincent depaul, Catholic Charities, Bristol-Myers Squibb Children s Hospital,and American Red Cross of Central New Jersey. Our goal this year is to collect 10,000+ toys. We can do it with your help! Big Chill Facts Advertisement Advertising for the event reaches over 60,000 people in Middlesex and Somerset county and an untold number through major sport websites like Active.com and Runners World. Advertising mediums include Rutgers bus ads, digital screens on all campuses and press releases. Organization Rutgers University Recreation, along with the New Brunswick Recreation Department, provides the expertise to conduct the race. Members of the staff are joined each year by 250 volunteers from social and service organizations on and off campus. Business Community Involvement The business community has always gotten behind the event as well. More than 30 restaurants and 35 business owners in Middlesex and Somerset Counties help to sponsor the race by providing funding, prizes, food, and volunteers. The event would not be possible without their generous support.

Media Coverage Wrapping Party Each year, following the race, we spend a day wrapping all of the collected presents. We need your help to wrap the 10,000+ toys we will collect this year! 10,000 presents were donated at the 2014 race to children in the greater New Brunswick Area.
