LHP Chris Sale, who leads the American League with a 2.03 ERA, will start the opener of the twinbill, while RHP Chris Bassitt will make his debut in the nightcap. The White Sox are 1-3 on the homestand, dropping a 7-1 decision last night after losing two of three games to Cleveland. Following this four-game series and a day off on Monday, the White Sox take a five-game, six-day trip to Minnesota (9/2-3) and Cleveland (9/5-7). TODAY S STORYLINES The White Sox are playing their second doubleheader of the season the Sox were swept at home by the Angels on 7/1. Chris Sale owns a 1.36 ERA (6 ER/39.2 IP) with 42 strikeouts in his last fi ve starts against Detroit. Rookie Jose Abreu owns a nine-game hitting streak (.500, 16-32) and is hitting.420 (21-50) with eight doubles, five home runs and 11 RBI in 13 games vs. Detroit this season. Adam Eaton is hitting.440 (44-100) with a.495 on-base percentage over his last 26 games. ROSTER MOVES Prior to game one of today s doubleheader, the White Sox purchased the contract of RHP Chris Bassitt from Class AA Birmingham to make room for Bassitt, the Sox optioned RHP Scott Carroll to Charlotte following last night s game. The Sox also recalled LHP Eric Surkamp from Class AAA Charlotte as the 26th active player for today s doubleheader. LAST NIGHT S RECAP Detroit scored five runs on four hits and two errors in the fourth inning to break open a 2-1 game and went on to a 7-1 victory. Starter Scott Carroll suffered the loss, allowing seven runs (three earned) on 10 hits over 5.0 IP. Jose Abreu reached base safely in all four plate appearances, going 3-3 with a double and walk to extend his hitting streak to nine games. Adam Eaton was 3-4 with a double, walk and run scored to raise his average to a season-high.310. Alejandro De Aza collected his 500th career hit with a secondinning double off Justin Verlander. SMOOTH SALE-ING LHP Chris Sale is attempting to become the fi rst White Sox pitcher to lead the American League in ERA since Joel Horlen in 1967 (2.08). Sale leads the AL in ERA and opponents average (.201) and ranks among the leaders in winning percentage (2nd,.769), WHIP (2nd, 0.93), strikeouts per 9.0 IP (2nd, 10.46), opponents OPS (2nd,.547) and strikeouts (8th, 165). He has struck out 12-plus batters a franchise-record nine times and has fanned 10 or more 16 times, second-most in franchise history behind Ed Walsh (17). Sale s 165 strikeouts are a franchise record through 21 starts of a season, and his 2.03 ERA would be the lowest by a Sox starter since Wilbur Wood (1.91) in 1971. DUELING DEBUTS According to Elias, tonight s second game marks the fi rst White Sox game to feature two starting pitchers making their major-league debut since 9/21/63 at Detroit. In that game, Chicago s Fritz Ackley (2 ER/6.0 IP) posted a no decision against the Tigers Denny McLain, who allowed three runs (one earned) on seven hits in a complete-game victory. This is the third such occurance in the majors in 2014: Chase Whitley (Yankees) vs. Jacob degrom (Mets) on 5/15; and Marco Gonzales (St. Louis) vs. Yohan Flande (Colorado) on 6/25. TRIPLE THREAT Rookie Jose Abreu leads the American League with 97 RBI, is tied for second with 33 home runs and ranks fi fth with a.316 batting average. At his current pace, Abreu would become the first rookie in major-league history to finish in the Top 5 of all three Triple Crown categories and the fifth player in White Sox history to accomplish the feat, joining Joe Jackson (1920), Dick Allen (1972), Frank Thomas (1994) and Albert Belle (1998) source: STATS LLC. The last rookie to finish in the Top 10 of all three Triple Crown categories was the Dodgers Mike Piazza in 1993, while Minnesota s Tony Oliva (1964) was the last AL rookie to do so. PAUL KONERKO S FAREWELL SEASON Paul Konerko is playing in his 18th and final season, including 16 with the White Sox agreed to a one-year contract on 12/4/13. His 16-season tenure with the White Sox is the second-longest with a current team behind the Yankees Derek Jeter (20 seasons).
