GIANTS STARTING PITCHER PAGE 2 #53 RHP Chris Heston 6-3, 195, April 10, 1988 (27) 8-5 Record, 3.73 ERA Palm Bay, Florida native is slated to make his 16th start of the season today...has gone 8-5 with a 3.73 ERA (38er, 91.2ip) in 15 starts since taking the rotation spot of RHP Matt Cain on April 8...the Giants are 10-5 in his starts, winning seven of his last nine trips to the hill. Received the key to his hometown city (Palm Bay, Florida) yesterday from Palm Bay mayor William Capote for his recent no-hitter on June 9. 27-year-old right hander enters tonight's game leading all NL rookie pitchers in wins and strikeouts, second in innings pitched and ranking seventh in ERA. His eight wins are already the most by a Giants rookie pitcher since Matt Cain had 13 in 2006. Is 3-1 with a 2.36 ERA (7er, 26.2ip) in his last four starts (includes his no-hitter on June 9). Earned his eighth win of the season in his last start on Thursday versus San Diego in SF's 13-8 victory at AT&T Park... logged 7.0 innings and allowed two runs on five hits with six strikeouts. Has averaged the third-most run support among NL pitchers, averaging 5.99 runs per game...only SD's James Shields (6.27) and ARI's Rubby De La Rosa (6.19) have averaged more. Tossed the first no-hitter of the 2015 season, the 17th in Giants franchise history and the first by a Giants rookie in 103 years on June 9 at New York-NL in the Giants' 5-0 win... it marked the third time the Mets had been no-hit at home in their franchise history...struck out a career-best 11 batters and allowed three baserunners, all coming via HBP...threw 72 of 110 pitches for strikes in what was the 35th completegame no-hitter by a rookie in Major League history. Became the third Giants rookie to throw a no-hitter, joining Jeff Tesreau (Sept. 6, 1912 at Philadelphia) and Christy Mathewson (July 15, 1901 vs. St. Louis)...prior to Heston, the last Major League rookie to throw a no-hitter was Boston's Clay Buchholz on Sept. 1, 2007 vs. Baltimore. Perhaps most impressive was the fact that he became the first pitcher since Sandy Koufax in 1965 to strike out the final three batters of a no-hitter. Has posted the eighth-best ground ball rate among NL starters at 54.6%. Opponents are hitting.347 (26-for-75) off him with runners in scoring position, but just.179 (5-for-28) with RISP/2 outs. Prior to the season, Baseball America rated Heston the 25thbest prospect in the Giants' organization. A 12th-round pick out of East Carolina University, Heston was a last minute addition to the Giants' roster in their seasonopening series against the D-Backs in April. Had been designated for assignment two years ago (July 2013) and went unclaimed...was then signed by the Giants to a minor league contract.
