Curriculum Vitae of Guoliang (Larry) Xue, January 2010 2 5 RESEARCH CONTRIBUTIONS 5.1 QoS Provisioning C54: Jian Tang, Guoliang Xue, Weiyi Zhang; Interference-aware topology control and QoS routing in multi-channel wireless mesh networks ; ACM MOBIHOC 2005, pp. 68 77. Different channel assignments can lead to different topologies in a multi-channel wireless mesh network. We introduce the concept of co-channel interference and present a simple channel assignment to construct a K-connected topology with low interference. We propose, for the first time, to use quality of service (QoS) guarantees to model the problem of interference aware routing and scheduling in multi-hop multi-channel wireless mesh networks. One of the challenges in interference-aware routing is the presence of intra-flow interference where the flow on some link of the path may interfere with the flow of another link on the same path. A novel linear programming based approach is proposed to deal with both intra-flow interference and inter-flow interference. The paper has been cited more than 200 times according to Google Scholar. J74: Guoliang Xue, Weiyi Zhang, Jian Tang, and Krishnaiyan Thulasiraman; Polynomial time approximation algorithms for multi-constrained QoS routing ; IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking; Vol. 16(2008), pp. 656-669. This paper studies the classical multi-constrained QoS routing problem. Given a source node and a destination node, we are interested in computing a source-to-destination path that satisfies one additive QoS constraint, while optimizing K-1 other additive QoS constraints. For this NP-hard problem, we present a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS), which can find (1 + ɛ)-approximations in polynomial time. For the case of K = 2, our FPTAS improves the state of the art with a lower time complexity. For the general case, our FPTAS runs an order V faster than the previous best algorithm. J69: Guoliang Xue, Arunabha Sen Weiyi Zhang, Jian Tang, and Krishnaiyan Thulasiraman; Finding a path subject to many additive QoS constraints ; IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking; Vol. 15(2007), pp. 201 211. In this paper, we study the problem of computing a source-to-destination path that simultaneously optimizes K 2 additive QoS constraints. We present a novel K-approximation algorithm with running time as low as that of Dijkstra s shortest path algorithm. We also present a fully polynomial time approximation scheme (FPTAS) which can find (1+ɛ)-approximations in time O(m( n ɛ )K 1 ), where n and m are the number of nodes and links in the network. Our FPTAS is asymptotically the fastest possible. C71: Guoliang Xue and Weiyi Zhang; Multiconstrained QoS routing: Greedy is good ; IEEE Global Communications Conference (Globecom 2007); pp. 1866-1871. Best Paper Award. In this paper, we present a very simple hop-by-hop routing algorithm for the problem studied in [J69]. Our algorithm runs as fast as (and is very similar to) Dijkstra s shortest path algorithm. While the proved approximation ratio is K (the same as that of the algorithm

Curriculum Vitae of Guoliang (Larry) Xue, January 2010 3 in [J69]), this algorithm performs much better, demonstrated by extensive computational studies. C81: Satyajayant Misra, Guoliang Xue, and Dejun Yang; Polynomial time approximations for multi-path routing with bandwidth and delay constraints ; IEEE INFOCOM 2009; pp. 558-566. Given a source and a destination, along with a bandwidth requirement B, we are interested in computing a set of source-to-destination paths with an aggregated bandwidth at least B, while minimizing the delay of the longest path in the set. We show that the previous best algorithm can be arbitrarily far from the optimal solution, and present a fully polynomial time approximation scheme for this problem, based on a novel linear programming approach. 5.2 Survivable Network Design J56: Guoliang Xue, Li Chen, and K. Thulasiraman; Quality-of-service and quality-of-protection issues in preplanned recovery schemes using redundant trees ; IEEE JSAC Optical Communications and Networking series; Vol. 21(2003), pp. 1332 1345. Medard, Finn, Barry and Gallager proposed the MFBG scheme for computing a pair of red/blue trees that can be used for preplanned recovery (from single failure) in networks. We present the XCT scheme for computing a pair of red/blue trees for preplanned recovery. We demonstrate that every pair of red/blue trees that can be generated by the MFBG scheme can be generated by the XCT scheme, but not vice versa. We also demonstrate that the red/blue trees can be used for recovery from multiple failures, as long as the failures are isolated. We further introduce the concept of quality of protection of a pair of red/blue trees to measure the number of simultaneous isolated failures that the red/blue trees can be used to recover, and show that the quality of protection is equal to the number of ears in an ear decomposition of the pair of red/blue trees. Our scheme has been used by other researchers in the design of survivable routing tables for wireless sensor networks. J73: Weiyi Zhang, Guoliang Xue, Jian Tang, and Krishnaiyan Thulasiraman; Faster algorithms for constructing recovery trees enhancing QoP and QoS ; IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking; Vol. 16(2008), pp. 642-655. In this paper, we present linear time algorithms for the construction of red/blue trees, further improving the results in [J56]. C68: Weiyi Zhang, Guoliang Xue, and Satyajayant Misra; Fault-tolerant relay node placement in wireless sensor networks: problems and algorithms ; IEEE INFOCOM 2007; pp. 1649 1657. In a wireless sensor network, short range multihop transmission is preferred to prolong the network lifetime due to super-linear nature of energy consumption with transmit distance. Therefore relay nodes are deployed in a wireless sensor network as a means to extend network lifetime. The relay node placement problems aim to meet certain connectivity and/or survivability requirements of the network by deploying a minimum number of relay nodes. In this paper, we formulate the problem of fault-tolerant relay node placement and present O(1)-approximation algorithms for this problem.

Curriculum Vitae of Guoliang (Larry) Xue, January 2010 4 C73: Satyajayant Misra, Don Hong, Guoliang Xue, and Jian Tang Constrained relay node placement in wireless sensor networks to meet connectivity and survivability requirements ; IEEE INFOCOM 2008; pp. 879 887. In practice, there may be some physical constraints on the placement of the relay nodes: there may be a lower bound on the distance between two network nodes to reduce interference; there may be some forbidden regions where relay nodes cannot be placed. Therefore we study two-tiered constrained relay node placement problems, where the relay nodes can only be placed at some pre-specified candidate locations. We present O(1)-approximation algorithms for these problems. An extended version of this paper has been accepted for publication in IEEE/ACM Transactions on Networking. C39: Reid Andersen, Fan Chung, Arunabha Sen, Guoliang Xue; On disjoint path pairs with wavelength continuity constraint in WDM networks ; INFOCOM 2004; pp. 524 535. A fundamental problem in preplanned recovery in WDM optical networks is to compute a pair of link-disjoint lightpaths connecting a source node s to a destination node t in a WDM network. A commonly used heuristic algorithm for this problem is to find the first lightpath (known as the active path) and then find the second lightpath (known as the protection path) without using the links that are used by the first lightpath. This is known as the active path first heuristic. If the active path first heuristic fails to find the first lightpath, it implies that a pair of link-disjoint lightpaths connecting s and t does not exist. However, if the active path first heuristic finds the first lightpath but fails to find the second lightpath, it does not imply that a pair of link-disjoint lightpaths connecting s and t does not exist. For a long time, researchers in the networking community have speculated that finding a pair of link-disjoint lightpaths connecting a pair of source and destination nodes is NP-hard. We proved that this fundamental problem is indeed NP-hard. 5.3 Optimization C40: Xiuzhen Cheng, Andrew Thaeler, Guoliang Xue, Dechang Chen; TPS: A time-based positioning scheme for outdoor wireless sensor networks, INFOCOM 2004; pp. 2685 2696. This paper presents a simple and robust localization scheme for wireless sensor networks. The advantage of this scheme over other localization schemes is two-fold. First, this scheme does not require both RF and ultra sound signals. Second, this scheme is completely localized. It does not require synchronization among the sensor nodes and the anchor nodes. The paper has been cited over 130 times according to Google Scholar. J27: Guoliang Xue and Yinyu Ye; An efficient algorithm for minimizing a sum of Euclidean norms with applications ; SIAM Journal on Optimization; Vol. 7(1997), pp. 1017 1036. Many optimization problems (such as the Euclidean multifacility location problem) can be transformed into the minimization of a sum of Euclidean norms. While there have been some iterative algorithms for this problem which converges to the optimal solution in the limit, there have been no known polynomial time algorithms for this problem. In this paper, we

Curriculum Vitae of Guoliang (Larry) Xue, January 2010 5 present primal-dual potential reduction algorithms for this problem, and prove its polynomial time complexity. More than a decade later, the results in this paper is still the best known for this problem. In a companion paper [J41] (also published in the SIAM Journal on Optimization), we presented polynomial time algorithm for minimizing a sum of p-norms for any p [1, ]. The paper has been cited 86 times according to Google Scholar. T01: Brett M. Averick, Richard G. Carter, Jorge J. An novel part of MINPACK-2 is the inclusion of a large number of real world test problems. This technical report present a collection of these problems and their solutions via the application of the optimization software in MINPACK-2.
