TOUGH WEEKEND IN CLEVELAND--About the only good news that came out of a 4-game stop in Cleveland was Kansas City s snapping of the Tribe s A.L. record 22-game winning streak on Friday night... the Royals then dropped the next two contests to lose three of four in the set, the finale a 3-2 defeat on Sunday...Danny Duffy returned to the hill for the first time in over three weeks and was outstanding, making only one mistake, which was hit a long way by Edwin Encarnacion...the 2-run blast was the only hit allowed by Duffy after he retired the 10 of the first 12 he faced, the other two reaching on errors...he fanned eight and walked none while on a pitch limit that was reached with 62 through 5.0 innings...the offense was stifled by perennial Cy Young candidate Corey Kluber, who ran his record to 17-4 with 7.0 shutout innings...the Royals plated two in the eighth and had two aboard in the ninth, but wound up falling for the 15th time in the last 24 games and enter play tonight 4 1/2 games out in the Wild Card race with only 13 games to play. GORDON ADDS TO PLUNKING RECORD--Left fielder Alex Gordon was hit by a pitch in Sunday s loss at Cleveland, the 14th bruise incurred this year which ties him with Todd Frazier for fourth in the American League this season...it was also the 89th plunking of his career, extending his club record by 11 over the previous mark of 78 set by Mike Macfarlane during his two stints with the club (1987-94 and 1996-98)...the 89 hit by pitches are tied with Adam Jones and the retired Kevin Youklis for second most among American Leaguers since 2007 when Gordon broke into the Majors...Shin-soo Choo leads since 07 with 94 HBP s. STOP #2 ON EXTENDED JOURNEY--Tonight starts the second series of this 4-city, 11-game journey that started with a 1-3 visit to Cleveland, as the Tribe clinched the A.L. Central...KC is here through Thursday, then will travel to Chicago for three over the weekend and then make-up a May 25 washout with a matinee affair in Yankee Stadium next Monday...the last time Kansas City hit four towns on one trip was April 29-May 11, 2005, making stops in Cleveland, Chicago, Baltimore and Toronto, going 3-9 on the swing. WILL IT BE A LUCKY 13?--Kansas City enters tonight with 13 games remaining and needs to make up 4 1/2 games in the standings if it intends to get back to postseason play for the third time in four years...with Cleveland no longer on the 2017 regular season slate, the combined record of KC s five remaining opponents stands at 362-388 for a.483 winning pct...of the remaining opponents, both the Yankees and Diamondbacks have substantial leads for the #1 Wild Card spot in each league...kc has six games left within the A.L. Central including Chicago (3) and Detroit (3) who collectively possess a mark of 122-177 for a.408 winning pct...the remaining non-central squads on KC s schedule are Toronto (3) and the Yankees (1), who are a combined 153-147, a.510 pct., while the National League s Arizona Diamondbacks are the last opponent of the regular season and have an 87-64 ledger. ACE 30 REMEMBERING YO--The morning of January 22, 2017 will always be remembered as one of the most tragic days in franchise history when word was received that pitcher Yordano Ventura had his life cut short due to a car accident in his native Dominican Republic...signed as a 17-year old in 2008, the fireballing right-hander compiled a 38-31 during his abbreviated Major League career...among many highlights, Ace will be most remembered for blanking the San Francisco Giants over 7.0 innings in Game #6 of the 2014 World Series to force a seventh and deciding game, while pitching with a heavy heart himself due to the untimely passing of his friend Oscar Tavares...to honor the late Ventura, all uniforms in 2017 are adorned with the ACE 30 patch.
