Each team held serve on its home floor. He dropped both meetings with the Spartans in his first go around with the Buckeyes but then topped MSU in the team s only meeting last season. LAST YEAR AGAINST MICHIGAN STATE It wasn t Ohio State s best shooting night but the Buckeyes picked-up defensively in the second half and pulled away from Michigan State for a 76-62 victory on Feb. 2, 2015 in Columbus. The Buckeyes shot just 38 percent but defensively, they held Michigan State to its second-worst shooting night of the year (29.4 percent) and turned around a one-point deficit early in the second half for its fourth-straight victory. Freshman Kelsey Mitchell finished with a game-high 31 points and six three-point field goals. Junior Ameryst Alston was 0-of-6 in the first half but canned six of her 10 attempts from the floor in the second 20 minutes to finish with 19 points. She also tied a season-high with six assists. With her 24 points tonight, Ameryst Alston moves into 8th place in school history, passing Lisa Cline (1986-89) and Kim Jordan (1977-80). Alston now has 1,773 in her career. This was Alston's third-straight game of 20 or more points and her seventh of the season. Mitchell reached the 20-point mark for the ninth time this year. Mitchell led the team with six assists, tying a season-high. Mitchell Alston Craft Hart Blair RECENT SHOOTING After a slow start, the Buckeyes have really shot the ball well in the last eight games. The Buckeyes are shooting 52 percent over the last eight contests are have a record of 7-1. Ohio State has shot better than 50 percent from the floor in seven of the last eight games. OSU top shooting mark this season came against Princeton when it connected on 57.6 from the floor. The Buckeyes are also out-scoring their opponents over that same stretch by nearly 23 points per game. 88-STRAIGHT WITH A THREE Ohio State has made at least one three-point field goal in 88-straight games. The last time the Buckeyes failed to make a three-pointer in a game was on Feb. 10, 2013 at Northwestern. OSU was 0-of-6 from long range that game. Over the streak, the Buckeyes have made 10 or more threes in a game 13 times. The Buckeyes made 16 three-pointers in the win over Belmont this season which was one shy of the school's single-game record. Ohio State has made 33.4 percent (541-1,616) of its shots from beyond the arc and averaging 6.1 threes per game during the streak. This season, the team is averaging 7.5 three-pointers per game and making over 35 percent of its shots. Kelsey Mitchell made a school-record nine three-pointers against Minnesota on Jan. 15, 2015. FINDING THE RIGHT PERSON Senior guard Ameryst Alston has dished-out 5.6 assists per game over the last five games. She had a season-high nine assists in the win over Cincinnati on Dec. 6. Her 28 assists in the last five games have led to 63 points. Coupled with the 100 points she has scored herself over that stretch, Alston has had a hand in over 36 percent of the Buckeyes' scoring in the last five contests. Alston has dished-out a team-leading 45 assists on the season. ONE TOUGH SCHEDULE The Buckeyes have undoubtedly one of the toughest schedules in 2015-16. Ohio State has all four teams that went to the Final Four last season on the schedule and took on two of them right out of the gate. OSU opened the year at No. 2/2 South Carolina on Nov. 13 and then hosted No. 1/1 Connecticut in the home-opener on Nov. 16. Ohio State was the first team in NCAA history to play the top two ranked teams in the first two games of the season. The Bucks traveled to No. 3/3 Notre Dame this On Dec. 2 for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge and will then take on No. 5/5 Maryland in a homeand-home series during Big Ten Conference play. Ohio State also downed No. 10/9 Texas A&M on Nov. 28, 95-80 at the South Point Shootout. In all, Ohio State will face 14 teams that went to the postseason last year, including 12 NCAA Tournament teams. TYING RECORD MARKS Sophomore Kelsey Mitchell torched No. 10/9 Texas A&M for a school-record tying 42 points. She had 31 of those point in the 2nd half on 8-of- 9 from the floor. The 42 points tied Samantha Prahalis s single-game school record which she set on her senior day against Minnesota on Feb. 23, 2012. Mitchell also tied the single-game school record by making 15 free throws on 16 attempts. She tied Katie Smith (who had 15 free throws in a game two times) and Nikita Lowry. QUICKEST TO 1,000 Kelsey Mitchell became the fastest player in Big Ten history to reach 1,000 career points as she reached the mark in her 41st game. Mitchell s 1,000th point game in her school-record tying 42-point game against No. 10/9 Texas A&M on Nov. 28, 2015. That topped Kelly Mazzante of Penn State who reached the milestone in her 47th game. Katie Smith was the fastest Buckeye to reach 1,000 career points as she notched her 1,000th point in her 52nd game on Feb. 13, 1994 at Purdue. The NCAA record for fastest to 1,000 points was 37 games held by three players -- Maree Jackson, LSU (1976-78), Sandra Hodge, New Orleans (1981-84) and Kathy Miller, Weber St (1976-79). Mitchell is tied for the eighth-fastest to 1,000 points in NCAA history.

McGuff has won nearly 70 percent of the games he s coached and has a 304-131 career record in 13-plus seasons. McGuff is 49-32 with the Buckeyes. The Ohio native also coached nine seasons at Xavier (2002-11) and two seasons at Washington (2011-13). SCORING INSIDE = WINS The Buckeyes have one of the top back courts in the country but when Ohio State wins the battle inside, it usually wins games. Last season, the Buckeyes were 18-2 when scoring more points in the paint then their opponents. Under McGuff, the Buckeyes have a 36-10 record when scoring more points than its opponents in the paint. O CAPTAINS, THY CAPTAINS Ohio State has elected three players as team captains this year -- seniors Ameryst Alston and Cait Craft along with redshirt-freshman Kianna Holland. Holland s nomination is rather impressive as she had yet to play a collegiate game before being selected by her teammates. She is well respected and has a strong influence on the team both on and off the court. Holland joined the Buckeyes in January of 2014. For Alston, this is her second-straight season being named a team captain. She has averaged better than 19 points per game each of the last two years. Craft has been one of the Buckeye s pillars over the last two years as she has started 81-straight games in which she has played. SHARING THE LOVE Under head coach Kevin McGuff, the Buckeyes have dished-out 20 or more assists in a game 11 times and are a perfect 11-0 in those games. In fact, Ohio State has won 12-straight games when dishing out 20 or more assists. Dating back to the 2009-10 season, the Buckeyes have won 40 of the last 42 games when sharing on 20 or more of their field goals. MAGIC NUMBER 70 Head coach Kevin McGuff s style of fast break offense leads to more possessions and hopefully more points. Since he took over at the start of the 2013-14 season, the Buckeyes are 31-4 when scoring at least 80 points and 41-12 when scoring at least 70 points. Wooden and Naismith Award Watch Lists. Ohio State was one of nine teams with at least two players on the Wooden list. Mitchell and Alston were also on both Midseason lists last year. ALSTON, MITCHELL PRESEASON ALL-BIG TEN Senior Ameryst Alston and sophomore Kelsey Mitchell were both voted to the preseason All- Big Ten team by the coaches and the media. Mitchell was also named the Preseason Player of the Year in both polls. As a team, the Buckeyes were picked to finish second behind defending champion Maryland in both polls. The last time the Buckeyes were picked to finish second or better was in 2010 when they were chosen to win the conference. Over the last 11 years, a Buckeye has been tabbed preseason Player of the Year eight times, including Jantel Lavender who was picked to win the award in 2008, 2009 and 2010. This was Alston s second-consecutive preseason All-Big Ten award. She was named first team All-Big Ten each of the last two years after averaging better than 19 ppg each year. Mitchell was one of just two players on the 10-person team that was a unanimous selection in both polls. Mitchell is just the second sophomore to be tabbed preseason Player of the Year, joining Lavender in 2008. WELCOME TO BUCKEYE NATION Ohio State added a pair of very talented transfers over the summer as well as one at the end of the fall semester. Sierra Calhoun and Stephanie Mavunga both joined the team over the summer and Linnae Harper joined the team in December. All three players will sit out this season. Calhoun will have three years of eligibility remaining while Mavunga and Harper will have two years remaining. Calhoun and Mavunga will be eligible at the start of the 2016-17 season while Harper will be eligible at the end of the 2016 Autumn Semester. Calhoun started the first 13 games of the season at Duke as a true freshman in 2014-15 before leaving the program. She signed with the Buckeyes on June 5. Calhoun, a 6-0 guard from Brooklyn, N.Y., averaged 10.1 points and 3.8 rebounds in the 13 games at Duke. In high school, Calhoun was a McDonald s & WBCA All-America as well as the 2014 Gatorade High School New York Girls Player of the Year. Mavunga signed with the Buckeyes on August 1. The 6-3 center made 69 starts over the last two seasons at North Carolina. Mavunga averaged 12.5 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and notched 27 double-doubles in 72 games for the Tar Heels. She was named first team All-ACC last season and was a three-time ACC Player of the Week. Like Calhoun, Mavunga was also a McDonald s and WBCA All-American coming out of Brownsburg High School in Brownsburg, Ind. This summer, Mavunga and Harper helped Team USA to a runner-up finish at the Pan Am Games in Toronto. Harper played in a total of 69 games over two seasons at Kentucky and made 17 starts. She averaged better than 9.0 ppg game in those two seasons and at just 5-8, she was the Wildcats leading rebounder a year ago, averaging more than seven rebounds a contest. Harper was named to the SEC All-Freshman Team in 2014 and earned All-Defensive Team honors last season. 5 NATIONAL POLLS ASSOCIATED PRESS (WEEK 8) Rk. Team (No. 1 Votes) Rec.
