A unique usage of a double 3 d. bisect, used shortly after the introduction of the Cents-Currency due to lack of 5 cent stamps since the Connel-stamp was not issued; certificates Philatelic Foundation (1956) and BPA (1976). At right circular '7½d /Cs.' handstamp in red and manuscript notation 'pd'. Reverse with RICHIBUCTO / NB datestamp of despatch (July 25), Sackville transit cds and Sunderland (Aug 7) arrival. Reverse with 'St. John / NB' datestamp (Sept 19) and Hull arrival cds (Oct 3). Some file folds but a most attractive entire of great scarcity. Certs. RPS (1932 and 1968) Scott 1b+2 = $ 4'750 / Gi. 3'000 Note: A very similar entire from this correspondence was in the Kanai collection (Oct 1986) lot 2026. 2a, 3 6 1'000 103 GBP 750 USD 1100 104 104 3 d. dull red on blued paper, a diagonally bisected example used with 6 d. olive-yellow on blued, margin just touched at right, pre-paying the 7½ d. rate on 1855 mourning cover to Miss Smith in Ware, Herts., England tied by oval '1' barred obliterator in black. ST. JOHN - NB / PAID despatch at left (May 21) in brown and BRITISH / 5 d. / CLAIM in same ink. The adhesives also tied by framed 'Packet Letter / Paid / Liverpool' in red (June 17) and London datestamp of the following day. MAR 7" and adjacent red "PAID 10 CENTS". A very rare and most attractive cover, only 2 such frankings are known. 76 London 2015 Europhilex Rarities Auction 16 May 2015 120 1 shilling dull violet, horizontal pair and single with diagonal bi-sect or tri-sect 3 d. dull red, tied by grill "4" to envelope from "BATHURST NO 14 1859" via London and Panama to Callao, Peru; franking with mostly good margins, touched in places, shilling-values small marginal tears and the bi-sect with crease; the cover restored and pressed. A very rare franking and the only known cover from New Brunswick to South America, also the only recorded use of a 1 shilling pair on cover; certificate BPA (1999). Note: It is believed that the sender intended to use the 3 d. as a tri-sect to make up the 36½ d. rate with 37 d. franking as the closest possible way to fulfill this rate; assuming the 3 d. was bi-sected, the overpayment would be 1 d.
