Military History Through Tabletop Gaming Hosted By: Mr. Paul Gauthier Session One: June 13 17 Raiding Parties! Session Two: June 20 24 Raiding Parties! - Repeat Session Three: June 27 July 01 American Civil War Session One: June 13 17 Session Three: June 27 Jul 01 *Available to all rising Grade 5-9 students Raiding Party! Lead a Viking raiding party, command a lance of knights, rise up in rebellion with peasants, or fight off pirates as we use 25mm hand-painted miniatures to simulate the plague of small-scale warfare and raiding throughout history. Some of the possible scenarios are: Umbria, 800 A.D. Viking raiders appear on the English coast. Will the Fyrrd arrive to protect the villagers from the Vikings wrath? Brittany, 1354 A.D. - Ride with Sir Bertrand du Guesclin to drive out the English invaders and end the Hundred Years War. Lead a French raid or maybe take a castle. St. Somewhere in the Caribbean, 1700 A.D. - Yo ho! The good ship Lollipop would make a fine addition to your pirate fleet. All your cutting out party has to do is slip pass the forts, enter the harbor, overcome the ship s guards and sail out. Ship-to-Ship Action: Lead a pirate ship and try to capture the cargo ship Sea Slug all you have to do is get by the Royal Navy.
Session Two: June 20 24 *Available to all rising Grade 6-9 students Rally Round the Flag! Civil War Battles in Miniature A courier rides up from your Corps Commander telling you to attack immediately. Another courier rides up and hands you a second message from the Corps Commander asking, Why have you not attacked? Then a faint cheer is heard from the front lines. Has the enemy been reinforced? What should you do? The decision is yours. Beads of sweat break out on your forehead as the stress of battle escalates. Command your own brigade in a simulation of American Civil War battles using over 1000 hand painted, historically accurate 15mm miniatures. After being introduced to the basics of Civil War weapons and tactics, participants will test their skills in miniature battles starting at the regimental level and culminating with a brigade or division command. A Word on Tabletop Gaming For thousands of years, men and women have taken up arms and gone to war. Sometimes it was for profit, sometimes for God & Country and other times it was to protect their homes and liberties. Tabletop gaming has been used since the 17 th century as a way to simulate combat. But it is just a simulation. We move colorful toy soldiers across a table. We cheer our victories and moan over our losses. Then, at the end of the day, we pick our soldiers up and put them away until the next battle. There are no wounded, no dead, nor are there orphans and widows left behind. It is not real war. To forget this dishonors all those who have honorably given their lives in service. Through historical gaming, we can better understand and appreciate their challenges, hardships and sacrifice.
