A PUBLICATION OF THE VERMILION SAIL & POWER SQUADRON May 2018 COMMANDER Cathe Radabaugh, N The D7 Spring Conference was held on April 6 thru 8 in Independence. Several folks from Vermilion attended, and there are photos of the event in this edition the newsletter. Our Squadron donated a Red, White & Blue-themed wine basket to the host squadron s raffle (red wine, white wine and some kind of wine in a blue bottle just to go with the party napkins &plates); and Paul and Esther Hammel donated a wine basket, also. The Chief Commander s Representative was National Education Officer, V/C Craig Fraser, SN. The new Commander of D7 is Jim Holcepl, SN, of North Coast. Here are some items of note from the Conference. A District 7 committee will organize the District conferences for the near future. The next 3 conferences will be held at the Holiday Inn in Independence. For this November, the theme will be a Winter Wonderland District will email their twice-yearly newsletters to everyone with a valid email in the DB2000 database Vermilion was recognized for donating to the Education Award for the 25 th consecutive year There was a session on the Jump Start program at the conference. Dave Bialorucki has more information about this on-the-water training program. America s Boating Club is our new branding theme for the Squadrons. National will use dualbranding with the legal name (United States Power Squadrons) for a while. Squdrons are welcome to immediately begin using the America s Boating Club phrase and logo. The South Hills squadron has disbanded, and I ve since heard that Kanawha River is presently considering disbanding due to apathy. Meanwhile, here s to spring/summer finally arriving. It seems we re about to leap from days in the 40 s to the 80 s. Happy boating! Cathe America s Boating Club is a registered trademark of the United States Power Squadrons

3 LT/C KERRY MCCULLOUGH, AP Executive Officer Hopefully everyone who's been waiting for the water is now in the water. I found out that bringing back a finish is a young man's game, my arms are weary from rubbing out and waxing an old boat. Something about bringing that shine back to a 40 year old boat makes it worth while. Now, convincing myself that using Fabulinc.com's Honey Teak system is worth all of the money for the wood finish. It's a system that is supposed to bring back any teak when done properly. I will report on it when it arrives ($150 does about 50 square feet and you don't have to do your teak every year, website claims will hold up for over 5 years) The day rendezvous planned for June 16th has been put on hold, it's Father's Day weekend and the squadron is stretched thin with the commitment of doing the Kayak-a-Thon with LocoYaks. We are looking for suggestions and will discuss at May's Meetings (first in the Executive meeting, then at the membership meeting) We need to look at August dates at this point, unless folks would rather a September Cruise. REMEMBER TO CHECK YOUR BATTERIES in your Smoke Detectors and CO Detectors on your boat. If you don't have one and you sleep on your boat, you should have both. You may ask why on the CO if you don't have a generator, many people run their generators and the fumes can come into your boat. ALSO, Check your flares and aerials, they all seem to expire in April. Our Runabout is due. I did break down and purchase lifetime emergency light. They're safer and you just need to keep fresh batteries in them (Remembering to pull them when the boat comes out of the water for the year). Hope these friendly reminders help! Here's to Safe Boating in 2018! Lt/C Kerry McCullough, XO P/C RALPH SCHAEFER, SN Secretary/Treasurer Members, we have been asked to assist in the May 5 th and 6 th cleanup of the Black River. Right we are looking for people to man the registration table at 2 locations. Jackalopes and at Cromwell Park. The cleanup starts at 9:30 and runs till 2:00 with a free lunch afterwards. Let s help to complete this task and show what our organization is all about. Please give out V.S.C. business cards and offer to answer any questions about our organization. Kayaks and boats are welcome to join the cleanup. Over the years they have had up to 250 volunteers join the group. Wear you V.S.P.S hats, shirts, and jackets to show our colors. Please check our website for all the great summer activities we have planned. This is going to be the year we become Americas Boating Club Aka Power Squadron. The last meeting before summer is at Martinos in Vermilion and we are asking the public to join our meeting and learn just how healthy Lake Erie really is. Sect. Ralph 3
LT/C GILBERT LORENZO, AP Administrative Officer How excited are you to start the new boating season? I think that we are all tired of the cold and rain, but the weather seams to be changing for the best and so are we. We had a very nice meeting at the Depot in Oberlin and a very good speaker. We also had a very good pizza for dinner from Lorenzo s in Oberlin, but I felt bad because I was told to expect 25 to 30 members and only 15 showed up. There was enough pizza for another 15. I like to inform VSPS that a group of hungry kids enjoyed the food that evening. Please do not forget our 6:30 pm May 17 Meeting at Martino s in Vermilion. This will be our last meeting of the season. Now starts our different activities of the summer and we need your input and feedback to finalize this year s fun in the water. My sail boat is in the water, and I am ready to cruise. About you? do you need help? let me know. Call me at 330 419 0007 Thank you for your participation Gilbert.lorenzo1948@gmail.com D7 Spring Conference Photos 4
5 P /D/C DAVID A. BIALORUCKI, SN SEO and Membership Chair SEO REPORT All boating and Engine Maintenance courses are now completed. Exams are ordered for the Weather Course so we should have all classes completed by the end of May. I'm planning on two ABC boating classes for the Fall sessions along with offering the Piloting (Marine Navigation) for the fall. I know it isn't even summer yet, but if you would like to take this class let me know so we can order materials. A new program in USPS, America's Boating Club, is called Jump start. This program is aimed at new boat owners who need help with running their boats, docking, and how to safely operate their vessels. It's a two hour time frame on their boat going over what they need to know. One of our members can help these new owners at no expense or liability on our part. This also is a way to get new members to our Squadron. More info to come at a later date. MEMBERSHIP INVOLVEMENT May Birthday List: JACKIE COVERT, RUSSELL WILSON, P/C CDR PAUL HAMMEL Happy birthday to all.
