Fall/Winter Newsletter December 2017 President s Message Dear Friends of Rocky River Public Library, Welcome to another year of terrific activities and community service. The Friends are here for you to help sponsor numerous events at the library and in the community. If you are not already a member, make this the year you join. We can always use more support both financially and with your helping hands. As your new president, I would be remiss if I did not honor our immediate past president, Anne Demanelis. Her attention to every detail made her tenure the most successful ever, and has given us major shoes to fill. Friends is now more active than ever in its history, and together we can carry on that tradition. We ve already started with our own director, Jamie Mason, standing in as barkeep at River Dog Café to raise funds for library programs. This is just the start of what will be an active year. Be sure to review all the programs for every age group, listed in Inside View and look for the friends/rrpl logo on programs we support. Director s Message When a library opens its doors, it s opening up opportunity, knowledge and, ultimately empowerment giving people a chance to travel wherever their imaginations take them. That s more than just public service, that s changing lives. Stephen Cannell Rocky River Public Library opened its doors on November 19, 1928 as a small community library and now almost 90 years later, it has evolved to a lively learning and community center. While the way we consume literature has changed enormously over the years, one thing has not, the library must continue to play a central role in providing open and free access to information and ideas. We strive to continue to meet the changing needs of our patrons by providing free access to knowledge in the digital age, offering excellent programs and services for patrons of all ages, and at the same time remain a warm and welcoming gathering place for readers and community groups. We will celebrate the Library s 90 year anniversary throughout the year (look for more details in our upcoming editions of Inside View), but another big milestone to observe this February is our very own Cowan Pottery Museum s 40 th Anniversary. The Cowan Pottery Museum is the world s largest publicly held collection of Cowan Pottery and represents work by every artist that worked at Cowan and the breadth of styles, shapes, and glazes the Pottery was famous for. We are proud to house the museum and congratulate the Cowan Pottery Museum and the Cowan Pottery Museum Associates for enhancing our beautiful building with so many lovely objects. As you may have noticed, it was a little noisy on the lower level of the Library this past fall as construction crews were busy renovating the outdated restrooms. Often overlooked, public restrooms are some of the most used rooms in the building and we are eager to see the new facilities. The new restrooms will include updated ADA requirements as well as two new private single-use/family restrooms and a Mother s room. We are grateful for the support of The Women s Committee for making many of these upgrades possible. Renovations to the remaining restrooms on the Main and Children s floor will take place in 2018. Thank you for your patience during the process. CLEVNET news: On December 5, CLEVNET began hold, courtesy, and overdue notices via text. If you have any questions or want to change how you are notified, Contact the Circulation Desk at 440-333-7610 and speak to a Circulation Assistant for more information. The Library parking lot is an incredibly busy place, especially during after-school hours. I remind all patrons to use caution in the parking lot and abide by the posted signs. While bikes, scooters and skateboards are all popular modes of transportation, please for the safety of everyone, remind your children to not ride them in the Library parking lot. Happy New Year! See you at the Library,
National Friends of the Library Week The Friends of the Library have their very own national week of celebration! United for Libraries designated October 15-21, 2017 as the 12th annual National Friends of Libraries Week. In recognition, Rocky River Mayor, Pamela Bobst met with Friends of Rocky Library President, Leonard Abrams to commemorate the special week by signing a proclamation in honor of the nonprofit organization. The library has always played such an important role in my life and in my family s life, said Abrams. I truly enjoy being able to give something back by being an active member of this group. Library Director, Jamie Mason added, Our library would be much poorer without the Friends. The funds they raise definitely put the icing on the cake. I think most patrons would be surprised to learn how many of the services and programs they enjoy are supported by the Friends, including the popular Chef s Secrets, Tune in Thursdays and movie events.
