Dear 4-H Families, Ravalli County 4-H News Some of you may not realize that our office is truly an extension of the university out to each and every county across Montana. Every county in Montana has access to research-based information to help citizens learn. 4-H is the Youth Development program of MSU Extension and is one of the many education programs and services our office provides to Ravalli County. Recently, we have two new staff members in our office: Patrick Mangan, MSU Extension Agent, and Rachel Ariaz, SNAP-Ed Nutrition Instructor. Rachel Ariaz is responsible for providing nutrition education to qualifying schools and adults in Ravalli County. We were able to raise $433 that will help send our youth to 4-H camp this summer. Special thanks to Margaret Sharp for chairing this event this year. The winner of the raffle was Jen Volenstine, a 4-H parent. We are very grateful to local artist, Steve Wilson who donated the print, Sunrise Ranch. Our next meeting will be lunch May 2, 11:30 a.m. at the Hamilton Sr. Center. Please bring brow bag lunch. We would love to see and hear from all our alumni with any new ideas you have. 4-H News / 4-H Events Page 3 Seeking Volunteers for the BDGA ADGA Show Who: 4-H Members, Families and Friends Date: June 24th Time: 8 AM 5 PM or the end of the show. Where: The Ravalli County Fair Ground Goat Barn What: The Bitterroot Dairy Goat Association is seeking volunteers to help with our up coming BDGA American Dairy Goat Sanction Show. Duties will include: Hosting our Silent Auction tables. No money handling, just supervising and helping to set up. Photography: Take photos of our show winners and the days events. Set up and clean up for the show Why: To help support a community activity and maybe spark an interest in Dairy Goats! This event can be used to fill some of your 4-H Community Services and project goals. Please let me know if you need help signing up for any of these shows, or need a ride to be able to attend. It is great experience and opportunity to mingle with breeders throughout the state. Great Falls Fair, show dates July 29-30. Entry deadline July 14. Missoula Fair Open Class, show date August 7th. Deadline not yet posted (non-sanctioned show) Central Montana Dairy Goat Association, Choteau, show July 15, deadline for entries June 30. 2 rings available. Bitterroot Dairy Goat Association, Hamilton, show June 24, deadline for entries May 24 -Livestock Photography Coordinator Scott Nicholson has coordinated the photographers for all the Livestock photos for at least a few decades and has stepped down from the position. We are in need of a person to take over the coordinating of the photos needed at the fair. The coordinator will be given a notebook with lists of all of the market animal members, lists for each species awards, a schedule of the livestock shows, contact numbers for the barn supers and any other number that may be needed. The Coordinator will be responsible for: Obtaining the SD card from each species photographer Getting SD card to Walgreens or another quick photography service or downloading them Pick up prints from Walgreens or another quick photography service and take back to the sale office on the fairgrounds. Notify each barn when photos are ready. (Each barn will have volunteer(s) mount the pictures on the appropriate certificate.) The Coordinator will check with the species volunteers to make sure that no pictures are missing and that all of the photos are mounted and ready for the awards program. -Livestock Photographer for each species Scott was responsible for coordinating the photographers but now the Livestock Superintendent of each barn will be responsible for securing and training the photographer and helpers. The number of photos needed for the barn is dependent on the number of youth enrolled for the year. Contact the Superintendent if you are interested in this position. If you are interested in any of these positions and would like more information, please contact me at the Extension Office to discuss these positions. 4-H Events: In the county: Volunteers Needed for Upcoming Livestock Sale: -Livestock Sale Breakfast Coordinator Jayne Liles has coordinated the breakfast in the past and is looking for someone to shadow her this year. This person will then take over as the coordinator for the next year (2018) and until they decide to pass the torch to someone else. Prior to the fair, this person should expect about 8-10 hours of coordinating helpers for the day of the breakfast (Saturday, September 2, 2017), securing donations and submitting an equipment request to the Ravalli County Fairgrounds. Week of the fair, they will following up the equipment needs with the fairgrounds office. The day of the breakfast, this person will spend about 6 hours of setting up, running and cleaning up the breakfast with the help of other volunteers. After the fair, this person will write any thank you cards needed, return equipment, etc. MT Gives Day Ravalli County 4-H www.mtgives.org Date: Thursday, May 4-Friday, May 5 Ravalli County 4-H will be a part of the MT Gives Day on May 4 and 5! What is it? It s a Montana thing making sure our communities are strong and ready for their futures. That s why the Bitterroot Non-Profit Partnership is excited to offer an online giving event to inspire our neighbors to generously give to the nonprofit organizations making our communities stronger. On May 4-5, Montanans will come together and support our favorite organizations tackling today s issues. Will you join us? How you can help? Like Ravalli County 4-H on Facebook. Page 4 4-H Horse Camp Dates: May 13-14, 2017 (Saturday - Sunday) Time: Starts at 9 am Saturday & ends at 3 pm Sunday Location: Ravalli County Fairgrounds Main Arena Registration Deadline: Friday, April 21, 2017 All 4-H members who own a horse are welcome to join us for 4- H Horse Camp. This year s activities will include workshops to help you communicate better with your horse, provide health care for your horse, learn to read patterns, grooming, trail courses and more. For questions, please contact Shawnna Medlar at 360-2176. All campers will be sent detailed information about camp two weeks after registration closes. Market Swine Tag In Date: Tuesday, May 16 Time: 5:00-8:00 pm Location: Ravalli County Fairgrounds Weigh-in information will be mailed to you to bring to the mandatory weigh-in. If you are a breeding facility and are weighing in a market hog, please contact Mary Koenen, 4-H Livestock Sale Administrator @ 239-4809 for biosecurity measures. Market Goat and Market Sheep Weigh In Date: Wednesday, May 31 Time: 5:00-8:00 pm Location: Fairgrounds Weigh In Information will be mailed to you to bring to weigh-in. Please note for the 2017 Ravalli County Fair, a ewe lamb, if tagged as a market lamb, cannot be shown as a breeding project. Quality Assurance If you plan to sell in the upcoming Ravalli County 4-H and FFA Livestock Sale this fair, you will need to take Livestock Quality Assurance: once for youth 4-H age 13 and under and once for youth 4-H age 14 and over. If you were 14 on Oct 1, 2016, you will need to take Quality Assurance again this year. 4-H Events Livestock Showmanship Clinic Date: Thursday, June 15 Time: 5:30-8 PM Location: Fairgrounds, Hornung Arena Stations for all large animals beef, dairy, dairy goat, meat goats, horse, sheep and swine - will be available at this workshop. Come and learn how to show various animals to help you brush up your skills at this year s showmanship clinic! Small Animal Quality Assurance and Showmanship Clinic Date: Wednesday, June 21 Time: 6 pm Location: Corvallis Grange, 130 Dutch Hill Rd, Corvallis Geared towards rabbit, poultry and dog projects. This clinic will give you the Quality Assurance certification for Small Animals that you need to sell your small animals at the fair. Project leaders from each animal project will also give a demonstration on how to show them in a showmanship class. We will also have a local vet as a guest speaker. Don't miss out on the valuable information you can get about these animals. This is also a great opportunity to get a head start on round robin training. Information handouts will be provided. Ravalli County 4-H Summer Camp Dates: July 19-21 (Thursday through Friday) Location: Loon Lake 4-H Camp, Bigfork, MT For: Youth 4-H Age 8-12 (4-H age is age of youth on Oct. 1, 2016) Register by: June 30 or until full to Extension Office Cost: $105 for 4-H Members (Scholarships are available) and $135 for Non-4-H Members What is camp?? Camp and outdoor education has been a part of the Ravalli County 4-H program for decades. It is a chance for kids to be screen free for four days while enjoying canoeing making new friends, fun in the sun, learning new skills, relaxing by the fire, building teamwork, sharing the adventure and HAVING THE TIME OF YOUR LIFE! For all the quality assurance workshops, a chili dinner is provided, please bring with you a dessert or a side dish, such as chips or cheese. June 2, 6 PM, Cowpoke Ranch Supply open to all livestock members needing Quality Assurance Three Quality Assurance topics will be covered including Food Safety, Animal Health and Ethics in raising animal projects. This seminar is designed to help 4-H or FFA youth and families raise an animal which will provide a safe and wholesome product for consumers. 4-H Advisory Council Meetings Please make sure your club has a voice at the Ravalli County 4-H Advisory Council meetings! Send a teen or leader to represent your club at meetings. Mark your calendar for these 4-H Council Meeting dates: Monday, May, 15, Comissioner s Meeting Room, 3rd floor of County Administrative Building (same as Extension Office) Monday, July 24, TBD The meeting will start at 6:30 PM, specific location will be in the newsletter. 4

Cancellation of rides will be done approximately 2 hours before the ride at the latest. Contact: Elisa Plocher, 381-3504 or Shawnna Medlar, 360-2176 4-H Events In the State: Montana 4-H Congress Date: July 12-15, 2017 Location: Montana State University in Bozeman Cost: $100 per teen, Chaperones free (4-H Advisory Council will pay remaining registration fees) Registration Deadline: Thursday, June 8 Who: Open to all members 4-H age 13-19 Find Registration Forms: http://montana4h.org/programs/ events/mt-congress.html Youth must complete the Registration Worksheet - Youth and Medical Release Form. Montana 4-H Congress has been going on for over 77 years! This event includes workshops, contests, entertainment, social events, and the opportunity to recognize all State Award Winners as well as 4-H Foundation Scholarship Winners. How do you get to Congress? If you are going for the first time, teens do not have to compete in a county competition to attend. County competitions include: Stir-Ups, Speech and Demo Day, Fashion Revue. Or create a team on your own in any of the other areas Livestock Judging, Horse Judging, Gavel Games, etc. These consist of a team. One team per area will go to Congress. If you would like to create a team, contact the Extension Office as soon as possible. If there is more than the allowed individuals wanting to compete in a team event, there will be a local competition to qualify to represent Ravalli County. Who has won their trip to Congress so far? Top Seniors from Competition Day: Stir-Ups, Speech & Demo Day, Fashion Revue. These kits are your answer for species-specific, hands-on, durable learning materials. Use them in project meetings for teaching and evaluating knowledge of livestock and companion animals. Kits are available on loan through the Extension Office to registered leaders for one week rentals. Ravalli County Teen Council If you are 13 years old on or before October 1 and you are interested in developing your leadership skills please come to our meetings to see if Teen Council is for you. If you know you want to be involved in Teen Leadership this year, consider signing up on the 4-H registration form for the Teen Leadership Project. 4-H For Sale Book A 4-H For Sale Book is in the Extension Office for anyone to browse or place flyers of animals for sale, free animals, or other opportunities for sale. Items which are for sale require a price and cannot be a general advertisement for a business, organization or individual. 5

Page 6 4-H Reference Info / 4-H Meetings Fundraiser Equipment Fundraiser Equipment available for rent through the 4-H Advisory Council: cotton candy machine, snow cone machine, popcorn machine. There is a banner for clubs to use for fundraisers or community service projects, which reads: Ravalli County 4-H; Supporting your local youth. There are also electric coffee pots, which can also be used for hot water or coffee. Each piece of equipment available for rental for $10 (4-H rental fee) or $25 (non-4-h rental fee). These are available for download on the website: http://www.msuextension.org/ ravalli/4-h_forms.html These are available online at the Ravalli County 4-H website and for purchase through our office for $.50 each. Help your child become involved in 4-H 4-H offers many things to do. Here are few other exciting 4-H activities. Look for details in your county 4-H newsletter or ask your club leaders: Club Officer Training (Online): Resources available to teach youth about leadership roles within their clubs. 4-H Fun Day (Winter): This one day event is full of workshops, ranging from dance to robotics to crafts for youth age 9-12. Competition Day (Spring): Youth can compete in this one day event either in all three competitions or just one. Top senior members can compete at State Congress. Speech and Demo: Participants prepare speeches, illustrated talks and demonstrations and compete at three age levels. Stir-Ups Cooking Competition: Members plan and prepare a nutritionally balanced meal. Fashion Revue: Members interview and model articles of clothing that they have sewn. Horse Camp, Summer Junior Camp, Cloverbud Camp or Teen Winter Camp: All camps are overnight experiences of fun, friends and learning in the great outdoors. Winter Teen Camp is held in February; all others are held in the summer. Quality Assurance: (Winter and Spring) For any animal project, large or small. Guidelines for a 4-H or FFA member will be required to take QA two times: once for youth 13 and under and once for youth 14 and over. Weigh In: Livestock members who plan to sell at the Ravalli County Fair must weigh-in at the species-specific weigh-in. Beef and Dairy occurs in January; swine, sheep, and goat occurs in May. Showmanship Clinic (Summer): A Livestock and Small Animal clinics are held in the summer to help members prepare for the upcoming fair season. County Fair (Labor Day Weekend): This is an annual event the last week in August to provide an opportunity for 4-H members to exhibit their completed 4-H projects each year. 6 Special Accommodations If you anticipate needing any type of Special accommodations or have questions about the physical access provided, please contact the Extension Office at 375 6611 in advance of your participation. 4-H License Plates Remember when renewing or purchasing a license plate to consider the 4-H license plate. It is available at the Motor Vehicle Department. Committee Meetings Meetings focus on the overall organization and welcome to all leaders and members. Geared for adults and teen leaders to provide support and assistance to the program.
