We ll be starting off summer with an all-ages Summer Reading Kick-Off Party on Monday, June 6 th from 11:00 am - 1:00 pm. We ll have a bouncy castle and obstacle course for even more fun! This will be the first day to pick up a reading log and register for the reading program, which runs from June 6 th through the end of July. Registration will continue throughout the summer and reading logs can be redeemed for prizes. Be sure to check out all of this summer s exciting line-up of events! This summer s reading theme for the kids is On Your Mark, Get Set...READ! and we ll be doing a lot of fun fitness-themed and health-themed activities all summer long. We ll have programs and events for all ages this summer both at the Library and in the community, including separate programs for kids (birth to age 8), tweens (ages 9-13), teens (ages 13-18), and adults. Children & Tween Events Children Kid s Book Club* Tuesdays at 2:00 pm Read a different book from one of our favorite series each week. Books will include Magic Tree House: Eve of the Emperor Penguins, Geronimo Stilton: The Secret of Cacklefur Castle, Encyclopedia Brown and the Case of the Carnival Crime, and The Boxcar Children: Pizza Mystery. Come discuss the books, participate in trivia, and enjoy snacks. Registration is required. (1st - 3rd in Fall 16) Kindergarten Summer Science Club Thursdays at 10:00 am Each week we ll do a science project based around a book theme. For example, we might make elephant toothpaste to go along with the book Elmer the Elephant. (K & 1st in Fall 16) Try-It-Out Club Thursdays at 11:00 am Each week we ll have fun with a new activity i.e., art, food, inventions, a sundae party, etc. (2nd & 3rd in Fall 16) LEGO Club Friday, June 10 th at 2:00 pm (registration required) * Friday, July 15 th at 2:00 pm Build your own creation with everyone s favorite building blocks! Bricks 4 Kidz will be coming in June. In July, the Library will provide Legos and the finished creations will be displayed in the Library. (All ages.) Tweens Tween Book Club* Monday, June 6 th & July 11 th at 2:00 pm Read a different book each month along with other tweens at the Library! Come discuss the book, participate in themed activities, and enjoy snacks. We will be reading Lost in the Sun by Lisa Graff in June and The Crossover by Kwame Alexander in July. Registration is required. (Ages 9-13) Tween Advisory Group (TAG) Monday, June 13 th & July 18 th at 2:00 pm Volunteer your time and have fun doing it! This summer, projects will include assisting with Summer Reading registration and prize distribution. (Ages 9-13) Tween Eats Monday, June 20 th & July 25 th at 2:00 pm Put your culinary skills to use and give cooking a try! Recipes will include Solar Oven S mores in June and Homemade Ice Cream in July. (Ages 9-13) Tween Minute-to-Win-It Monday, June 27 th at 2:00 pm Compete in a series of deceptively difficult 60-second challenges. Prizes will be awarded to the winners! Community Outreach During the summer the Library visits multiple locations throughout the community in an effort to reach those who might not have the opportunity to come to the Library. Each week we ll offer different physical activities, as well as provide books for the children to borrow. Family Events Family Performances The Mark Wood Fun Show ǂ Thursday, June 16 th at 1:00 pm Mark Wood will use comedy, magic, juggling, and audience participation to produce a super-exciting and entertaining show about the importance of reading and the benefits of physical activities. (All ages.) Ronald McDonald ǂ Tuesday, June 21 st at 1:00 pm The iconic clown character will visit the Library for a silly performance about reading. (All ages.) Inter-County Reptiles and Amphibians ǂ Wednesday, June 29 th at 10:00 am (Library) ǂ Wednesday, June 29 th at 11:30 am (Hogsett Elementary School) Get an up-close look at some reptiles and amphibians native to Kentucky. (All ages.) Animal Tales ǂ Thursday, July 7 th at 10:00 am (Library) ǂ Thursday, July 7 th at 12:15 pm (Junction City Elementary School) Join us when Animal Tales presents Nature s Olympians: Animal Athletes. This program will feature exotic animals from all around the world that utilize their unique abilities to survive. Be prepared to get up-close and personal while learning about these very competitive creatures. (All ages.) The Space Painter ǂ Thursday, July 14 th at 1:00 pm Tom Sparough will dazzle the audience with his juggling and storytelling skills! (All ages.) ǂ Please plan to arrive early for these special FREE family performances. These events have limited seating. Tickets will be given out 30 minutes before and up to the start of each program until the tickets are gone. Outreach Location Performances: Tickets are not required to attend the performances offered at our outreach locations: Hogsett Elementary School and Junction City Elementary School. Family Guided Hikes Check out some local hiking spots that are fun for the entire family! Thank you to our Summer Reading Program Partners for leading these hikes! Central Kentucky Wildlife Refuge (Boyle County) Tuesday, June 14 th at 2:00 pm (Meet the guide at the Refuge entrance at the Carpenter Creek Road gravel parking lot.) The Central Kentucky Wildlife Refuge is a 500-acre preserve, located 13 miles from Danville in the Parksville knob land and bordering a stretch of the beautiful North Rolling Fork. Birds, animals, plants and other forms of wildlife may be seen on each visit, and they vary with the changing seasons. Location: Off Highway 37 on Carpenter Creek Road, Parksville, KY Dupree Nature Preserve (Garrard County) Tuesday, June 28 th at 10:00 am (Meet the guide at the Hiking Trail Entrance Service Gate by the parking lot.) The Dupree Nature Preserve boasts three miles of frontage along the Kentucky River and a portion of the best upland forest in the Palisades region, with a cathedral-like setting of chinquapin oak, white ash, beech and other trees. The nature preserve also harbors the unusual and declining Yellowwood tree and the habitat commonly used by federally-listed Indiana bats. Location: 2991 Pollys Bend Road, Lancaster, KY Shaker Village of Pleasant Hill (Mercer County) Friday, July 8 th at 2:00 pm (Meet the guide at the Pavilion by the parking lot.) Shaker Village has a 40-mile trail system that allows users of all ages and skill levels to roam at their own pace. It features family-friendly trails, a bird observation blind, Shaker mill sites and more. Location: 3501 Lexington Road, Harrodsburg, KY

Teen & Adult Programs Teen Programs The Summer Reading theme for teens this summer is Get in the Game...Read! We ll be doing a lot of athletic-themed and health-themed activities all summer long. *Registration is required for some events. Call the Library to register for the events you d like to participate in. All programs are FREE to attend! Teen Challenge: STEM in Sports Tuesday, June 7 th at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 12 th at 10:00 am Test your knowledge of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) concepts and engineering design abilities at this team competition. June Challenge: Basketball July Challenge: Tennis (Ages 13-18) Teen Crafternoon Friday, June 10 th at 10:00 am Tuesday, July 5 th at 10:00 am Try your hand at a different artistic craft or activity. June: Make a Pennant; July: String Art (Ages 13-18) Teens Write: Be a Sports Writer! Wednesday, June 15 th at 10:00 am (Conference Room) A group for teens who love to write. This summer, learn the ins-and-outs of being a sports writer. Jeremy Schneider, Sports Editor for The Advocate-Messenger, will talk about what s needed to write a great sports article. (Ages 13-18) Self-Defense for Teens I & II* Wednesday, June 22 nd at 2:00 pm (I) Wednesday, July 13 th at 2:00 pm (II) This 2-part course will cover hand-to-hand self-defense. The focus will be on countering physical bullying, robbery, and general assault. Various scenarios will be covered, primarily those likely to occur in a school or street setting. Registration is required. (Ages 13-18) Teen Book Chat Friday, June 24th at 10:00 am (Mahan Gallery) Come chat over snacks about what you ve most recently read or are currently reading. (Ages 13-18) Special Events for Teens & Adults (Ages 13+) Trivia Night (Teens & Adults)* Thursday, June 30 th at 7:00 pm A game show style competition to test your sports knowledge. Snacks will be available and prizes will be awarded. Registration is required. (Ages 13+) Please note: We will be showing a movie for any younger children (ages 5-12) of adults attending Trivia Night. The movie will be shown in the Storytime Room. Any child who will be staying to watch the movie must be signed in with Ms. Kate. Murder Mystery (Teens & Adults)* Friday, July 15 th at 6:30 pm Who would want the star of the Varsity soccer team DEAD? In this after-hours murder mystery, you ll join your fellow detectives in solving the mystery Death Gets A Red Card. You must investigate the crime scene and carefully examine the evidence in order to solve the crime! Pizza dinner will be served. Registration is required. (Ages 13+) Adult How-To Programs Couch-to-5K Tuesday, June 7 th at 2:00 pm If you ve ever wondered how to get yourself prepared to run a 5K, this is the program for you! Personal trainer Karla Curtsinger from the McDowell Wellness Center will show you how to get race-ready. Trail Safety & Topographical Map Reading Wednesday, June 8 th at 4:00 pm According to the Boy Scouts of America, "Every hiker must take responsibility for his or her own safety." Though planning and common sense can prepare hikers for most situations, this workshop will cover common safety concerns when trail hiking such as weather, terrain, animal encounters, and poisonous plants.
