Danish Red at the National Show 2010 The Danish Red exhibition at the National Show had 100 cows and approx. 15 heifers. The weather was outstanding, yet very hot for the cows the last days. The exhibition was marked by an extremely high level all over from lifetime yield to first lactation cows. The great winners of the show were Lars Bebe, Ringe, and Ernst Leif Nørgaard, Viborg. Viking bulls were class winners! This year s Danish red champion is from Ernst Leif Nørgaard who won with a first lactation daughter after R Ascona. She is familiar with the class winner title since she was champion at the latest Agromek Show. The title as reserve champion was won by a second lactation young bull daughter after R Europa from Lars Bebe. She also won the title as the best Danish red cow aged 3-4 years. The best older cow was the well-known SYD Dala daughter from Gert Aude, Ebeltoft. Besides seven calvings she is also a lifetime production cow since she has milked more than 3,600 kg fat + protein. Three very fine model cows in each class in the best possible way showing what the Danish red breed stands for at present. In the herd group competition there were 17 groups which is much compared to the number of animals at the show. In the open voting with four groups left, Lars Bebe was the winner with Ernst Leif Nørgaard at the second place. The following places were Lars Iversen, Skamby, and I/S Kokkenborg, Dronninglund. Danish Red Champion and best young cow from Ernst Leif Nørgaard, Viborg 24 p. Danish Red Reserve Champion and best 3-4- year-old cow from Lars Bebe, Ringe 24 p.

Besides the R Europa daughter Lars Bebe also had two R Ascona daughters and one R Alfa daughter in the group. The following group by Ernst Leif Nørgaard had two R Ascona daughters and one Peterslund daughter. In the Vejen Frem competition (Future competition) the idea is to spot future show winners when they are calves calves and heifers are registered for this competition but the competition winners are not found before they are first lactation cows. This year there were four cows in the final. Normally there are a lot more cows in the competition but due to the bluetongue situation in 2008 not many heifers entered the competition then. The winners of the competition were Lene and Michael Jensen, Hammel, with a Classic daughter. Best heifer came from Niels Erik Christensen, Randers, with an R David daughter. Best calf was from I/S Kokkenborg also with an R David daughter. In the competition for heifers and calves only 8 and 6 animals, respectively, were shown, but a lot more are in the competition but not shown this year. We are happy to see that some juniors have a good time preparing and showing the calves. From the Vejen Frem competition one junior well on the way! Traditionally the Danish red exhibition finishes with a breakfast table for all on Saturday morning and this year s event attracted more than 150 people. We appreciate that so many people joined the community that the Danish red exhibition is. The exhibitors have good spirit and are all helpful and cooperative. We look forward to welcoming you to an even better National Show next year!
