Boater Ed Unit On February 2 nd the PJH Outdoor classes completed the Boater Education Unit. PJH certified students. The graduates are: Kody Bennett, Adlih Calderon, Katie Chaix, Mary Cobb, Nathan Dooley, Jordan Embry, Juan Flores, Daniel Gamino, Bridger Gottshalk, Mason Hamm, Raven Jordan, Brittany Lester, Caleb Marshall, Philip Nance, Neil Nutt, Omar Palomares, Loranna Sutton, Tyler Sanders, Roman Villarreal, Graham Weatherford, Jeffery White, Alan Woodby, Tyler Woods, and Tierra Yates. Anyone born on or after September 1, 1993, must take and pass a Texas Parks and Wildlife Department approved Boater Ed course in order to operate a wind blown vessel of 14 feet or greater or a power vessel of 10 horse power or greater on Texas public waters. Congratulation to the graduates! Duck Box Project The PJH Outdoor classes have been working with the Lamar County Chapter of the Delta Waterfowl Association to construct and place nesting boxes around Pat Mayse Lake. This has been a community service project. Kyle McCarley at Paris Lumber and Building Center was able to find cedar lumber that was donated to the project. The PJH Shop classes assisted with the cutting, sanding, and assembly of the boxes. Blossom Hardware Store placed the Delta Waterfowl logo onto the face of the boxes using a laser-engraving machine. Sydney Foy and Ty Gray attaching the face to a duck box while Daniel Gamino, Kedris Mitchell, and Alan Woodby look on. This has been a great conservation project for the outdoor classes to participate in. Bryan Glass and Donnie Gentry, local chapter officers, have been GREAT to work with. We look forward to working with the Delta Waterfowl Association in the future on other projects. Paris Outdoor Adventures 2

Dutch Oven Cooking One of the most enjoyable units of study has to be Dutch Oven Cooking! Students, and several PJH staff members, look forward to this unit each year. It s amazing how good food can do that people. The first lesson in the classroom is to go over the parts of the oven itself, as well as, the various tools and equipment needed. After completing the classroom portion of the unit the students will conduct a lab putting the learned skills to practice. The first live cooking event will be a demonstration. During this demonstration I will prepare a dish for the students called Mountain Man Breakfast, basically an omelet. During this time the students will be observing the proper methods to use, handle, and care for the cast iron Dutch Ovens. Students will use the Internet to find dessert recipes for their cooking lab. Each class will be a team competing against the other classes. On the lab day in May students who are eligible for an E-Day will meet in the shop at 8:00am to begin breakfast. We will prepare biscuits and cinnamon rolls with butter and jellies. While one group works to prepare breakfast the remaining students will begin preparations for lunch, chicken with sage pork sausage with vegetables. Judges will be on hand to determine which class has prepared the Best Dessert! In the past we have had desserts such as pineapple upside down cake, Mississippi mud cake, and chocolate putting; just to name a few. I am hungry already!! Bass Pro Shops Garland Trip On January 31 st, the PJH Outdoor Adventures program took a field trip to the Garland Bass Pro Shops. The assignment for the day was to help a new boat owner equip his/her vessel with everything needed to operate legally on Texas waters. Below are few pictures from our day at BPS. We had several unique photo opportunities while at Bass Pro Shops, as can be seen below. Zachary trying out the control station on a nice bass boat! Paris Outdoor Adventures 3

Philip, I believe your ride is a little small and underpowered Several wanted to go out on the dock behind BPS: Playing in the sand after lunch. Angler Education Unit The final unit of study this year will be the Angler Education Unit. Students will learn the different types of equipment used to legally harvest fish, as well as, the laws and regulations set forth by the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Students will participate in several hands-on lab activities in the unit. Each student will learn and demonstrate the proper method to tying several types of knots, casting different types of rods and reels, as well as, identifying different species of fresh and saltwater fish. The culmination of the Angler Ed Unit will be the all day fishing trip in May. Students who are eligible for an E-Day will travel to Honey Grove, Texas, to fish in a private pond. This will be strictly a catch and release fishing trip. Restrooms will be available as well as an area to purchase snacks if the students wish. The Outdoor program will provide a pizza lunch for all those in attendance. Sixth Six Weeks The last six weeks of the school year the outdoor students take advantage of the nice spring weather to get outside. Students will revisit topics from the whole school year. We will revisit some of the skills trail activities, continue archery, revisit GPS and geo-caching, and play a fishing game called Backyard Bass. Just because there is not a new unit of study the last six weeks does not mean that learning has stopped. Paris Outdoor Adventures 4

Student Hunting / Fishing Successes Parents and students please share photos and descriptions of your student s hunting and fishing successes. I am going to be honest; I enjoy bragging on my students!! Mason Hamm had a very successful trip to Lake Fork during Spring Break. Mason and his Dad caught about 30 large mouth bass on Friday, March 16 th. Late in the evening Mason caught the fish pictured below off a bed. They were unable to weight the fish with scales. The guess is it weighs between 6 and 7 pounds! Saturday was also a fishing day Mason. Here is a photo of his Saturday catch: Mason!!!!!! Nice crappie Mason! Must have been a WONDERFUL fishing trip! Way to go Paris Outdoor Adventures 5
