UK/JAPAN SEASON OF CULTURE 2019-20 November 2017 KEY FACTS ABOUT JAPAN Has the world s 3 rd largest economy, accounting for around 6% of global GDP 1,300 Japanese companies have a presence in the UK, employing over 160,000 people. The UK has overtaken China as Japan s biggest investment location after the US. 3 rd biggest net scientific Research and Development (R&D) spender; greater than the UK, France and Germany combined. 26.7% of citizens are aged 65 or above in 2016 and will reach 33.7% in 2035. 1 1
JAPAN CONTEXT Major interest in issues around equality, diversity and inclusion and how the arts and creative industries contribute to wellbeing in society Government is keen to revitalise economy, bolster its security, project global influence and internationalise education system Drive towards internationalisation of education and improvement of English language standards, particularly in four skills communicative English Added impetus to reform and increase soft power influence through major sporting events 2 BRITISH COUNCIL JAPAN PRIORITIES We will enhance the profile of UK creativity, develop skills and generate new creative assets and relationships. By 20/21 we will position the arts and cultural sector to play a role in the building of more open, prosperous and diverse societies leading to increased wellbeing. We will improve English in Japan through developing more effective methods of teacher training across all four skills ; We will expand our teaching of English so that people can optimise their own employment, academic and life chances; We will promote the use of more effective and robust tools to assess English (in all fours skills ) We will increase student mobility in both directions in order to help young people in the UK and Japan realise their potential and to contribute to UK prosperity and trust between both countries We will increase joint UK/Japan higher education and industry collaboration in research and development in areas of common interest to both countries (such as aging) leading to positive social and economic change 3 2

UK/JAPAN SEASON OF CULTURE: VISION CREATING THE FUTURE The Japan Season will forge new partnerships between Japan and the UK to create a future where arts and culture play a role for increased well-being, mainstreaming diversity and inclusion and driving prosperity. Through developing cultural relationships between the UK and Japan, we will promote the UK as the place to visit, study and invest. 10 Core SEASON themes Diversity, Inclusion & Wellbeing We will drive mainstreaming of work by disabled artists and improve access to arts and culture for those who have less participation opportunities leading to enhanced wellbeing for all especially disabled and older people. Cities & Public spaces We will bring artists together with technologists in future city conversations and develop creative activities that create rich and fulfilling human experiences making cities better places to live, work and visit. Digital Innovation We will explore potential for digital innovation to make arts and culture enriching, diverse and inclusive relevant to the 21 st century. 11 6
