Introduction Background The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission private lands hunter survey and a revised wildlife management area (WMA) hunter survey were first implemented for the 1999 2000 hunting season. The present report describes the methods and gives the results of the 2007 2008 harvest season on both private and public lands. Purpose This survey was conducted to determine hunter satisfaction with the 2007-2008 deer season and the number of deer the hunters had been able to harvest. Estimates of the following were obtained in total and for both private or public lands: Number of hunters. Overall hunting satisfaction. Overall number of hunter days and harvest for deer. Number of hunter days and harvest for deer per county. Number of hunter days and harvest for deer by FWC Administration Area and FWC Management Zone Area. Harvest of bucks and does. Number of points for bucks harvested 1

Methodology Surveys were sent by mail to a total of 20,000 registered hunters asking them to participate in the survey. The sample was comprised of holders of licenses and permits that conferred a hunting privilege during the 2007-2008 hunting season (September 22, 2007 February 24, 2008). The sample frame was further defined as follows: holders of Disability, Lifetime, Resident, and 5-year Hunting licenses valid for some period during the 2007-2008 season. Sampling was proportional to the strata sizes for the 2007-2008 season. The sample was drawn from the original FWC Hunter License database, de-duped and consolidated into the categories shown below. Stratum Licenses contained in stratum Total % Sample Disability Resident Disabled 14,166 12.5 1770 Lifetime Resident Lifetime Sportsman s Lifetime Hunting Annual Hunting Annual Hunting/Fishing Combination Sportsman Military 12,838 12.5 1605 127,430 12.5 15,929 5 Year 5-year Hunting 5,597 12.5 700 TOTALS 160,031 20,004 Questionnaires were mailed out during July, 2008. Respondents were given a choice to complete the paper questionnaire and return it by mail or complete the survey online. The content of the paper and online questionnaires was identical. A copy of the questionnaire appears on the next page. Responses were accepted during July - September 2008. A total of 1,382 hunters completed usable surveys. Of these, 994 had hunted deer during the 2007-2008 hunting season (September 22, 2007 February 24, 2008). 2

Caveats Self-administered data input errors: Because the surveys were self administred by respondents, it was impossible to enforce a logical tally of answers. For example, for each respondent, the total number of days hunted should ideally match the number of days split by private lands and public lands, which are captured not as a total but by 67 individual counties. This did not always occur. As a result, tallies and estimates vary slightly depending on which numbers were used to calculate them. Low numbers of hunters within individual counties: For some counties, the number of returns received from hunters who indicated that they hunted within that given area was quite small and sometimes zero. As a result, it was not possible to calculate estimates/projections for all measures. The impact of the small base sizes also reduces the stability of estimates when there is large variability in the data (data better matchesa bell-shaped curve as sample size grows). Some lower range estimates were negatives values and were eliminated. 4

Summary of Findings The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) recently conducted a survey among registered hunters to determine their satisfaction with the 2007-2008 season and the number of deer they were able to harvest. A total of 1,382 hunters completed the survey, either online or via a mail questionnaire. Of these, 994 had hunted deer during the 2007-2008 hunting season. Key findings from this study are summarized below: Hunting by Season Nearly seventy percent of the hunters contacted indicated that they had gone hunting during the 2007-2008 season. By season, the highest participation rate was in the General Gun Season where participation stood at 61.8%. Participation was lowest for the Crossbow Season and the NW Zone Special Archery & Muzzleloading Gun Season (3.3% each). Number of Days Hunted and Deer Harvested Given the data collected by this survey, the best estimate of the number of deer harvested during the 2007-2008 season is 108, 437 with a range of 98,551 to 118, 323. The best estimate for the number of hunter days during the season is 1,780,825 with a range of 1,688,646 to 1,873,004. Hunting on Private vs. Public Lands Among those hunting last season, 63.9% hunted on private lands and 52.3% on public lands. Nearly half hunted only on private lands (47.7%), a third only on public lands (36.1%) and 16.2% hunted on both private and public lands. 5

Hunting Satisfaction in 2008 Hunting satisfaction during the 2007-2008 hunting season has continued to decline. The percentage of hunters who were very satisfied or satisfied during last season stood at 54.2%. In 2001, by contrast, satisfaction was over sixty percent. Satisfaction, not surprisingly, was slightly higher among those who hunted on private lands. More than half (55.9) of those hunting on private lands were very satisfied or satisfied. Among those hunting on public lands, 50.1% were very satisfied or satisfied. 6

Detailed Findings Hunting by Season Just under seventy percent of the hunters contacted indicate that they had gone hunting during the 2007-2008 season. The highest participation rate was in the General Gun Season where participation stood at 61.8%. Participation was lowest for the Crossbow Season and the NW Zone Special Archery & Muzzleloading Gun Season (3.3% each). Percenting of All Hunters Hunting By Season Total Hunters Total Hunters 68.9% General Gun Season 61.8 Muzzle loading Gun Season 30.9 Archery Season 30.2 Crossbow Season 3.3 NW Zone Special Archery & Muzzleloading Gun Season 3.3 Considering just those who did hunt in 2007-2008, virtually all (91.9%) hunted during the General Gun Season while half that level hunted in the Muzzle Loading Gun Season or the Archery Season (45%). Only about five percent of the 2008 hunters participated in Crossbow Season or the NW Zone Special Archery & Muzzleloading Gun Season (4.8%). Those who hunted on public lands were slightly more likely to hunt during the muzzle loading gun season (50.9% vs. 43.7%). Number of Days Hunted and Deer Harvested Given the data collected by this survey, the best estimate of the number of deer harvested during the entire 2007-2008 season is 108, 437 with a range of 98,551 to 118, 323. The best estimate for the number of hunter days during the season is 1,780,825 with a range of 1,688,646 to 1,873,004. Hunting on Private vs. Public Lands Among those hunting last season, 63.9 percent hunted on private lands and 52.3 on public lands. Note that the two percentages total to more than 100% as some hunted on both. Type of Land Hunted Total Hunted on Private Lands 63.9% Hunted on Public Lands 52.3 Nearly half hunted only on private lands (47.7%), nearly a third only on public lands (36.1%) and 16.2% hunted on both private and public lands. Hunting satisfaction during the 2007-2008 hunting season has continued to decline. The percentage of hunters who were very satisfied or satisfied during last season stood at 54.2%. In 2001, satisfaction was over sixty percent. Satisfaction, not surprisingly, was slightly higher among those who hunted on private lands. Reported satisfaction was highest amongst those hunting in the NW Zone Special Archery & Muzzleloading gun season (63.4%) and lowest for those hunting during the Crossbow Season (43.4%). Caution, however, that the base sizes are particiularly small for these two seasons.
