JOHNSON COLISEUM - 7,203) STORY LINES The Stephen F. Austin women s basketball team will look to rebound from a tough road loss at Louisiana Tech over the weekend when the squad returns to William R. Johnson Coliseum on Tuesday night. The Ladyjacks will host LSU-Shreveport, an NAIA institution currently ranked 25th in the nation, beginning at 7:00 p.m. LSU-Shreveport has done some good things already this year, said head coach Mark Kellogg. They ve picked up a couple quality wins against some other ranked NAIA teams and competed well against a Division I program in an exhibition game. They re really athletic and have some talented post players. They ll challenge us in different ways for sure. The Pilots are off to a good start to the 2015-16 season, already knocking off two top 25 teams among the NAIA ranks. LSU-S first upset No. 7 Oklahoma City on Nov. 14 and then beat No. 21 Xavier just one day later in the LSU-Shreveport Classic. Junior forward Kourtney Pennywell leads the Pilots in scoring through four games, averaging 13.5 points on 45.9 percent shooting (17-for-37). Sophomore guard Alexandra Miller has also been a threat offensively with a 10-point scoring average in four games (three starts) while junior forward Quiana Tucker is putting up a double-double nearly every time she takes the floor with 8.5 points and 10.5 rebounds per contest. For the Ladyjacks, it was a convincing 91-69 victory over UT-Tyler in the season opener that got the season started off right. Over the weekend, however, SFA ran into a hot LA Tech team that bested the Ladyjacks 76-44 in Ruston. The Lady Techsters took a one-point lead into the break but outscored SFA 32-4 in the third quarter to open the game up. Freshman guard Chanell Hayes paced the Jacks with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting on the night and averages 11.0 ppg through the first two games of the year. Sophomore guard Brentney Branch currently leads the team with 14.0 points per game this season, followed closely by senior guard Taylor Schippers (12.0 ppg). Senior guard Paulletta Powell and sophomore forward Stevi Parker have each been contributing 9.0 points per night so far. Preseason All-Conference guard Taylor Ross is expected to see her first action of the season on Tuesday night after missing both of SFA s first two games. She is the Ladyjacks top returning scorer from last year s championship team with 14.0 ppg in 31 contests. Johnson Coliseum. SFA had no trouble scoring the basketball as four players scored in double figures. Junior guard Brentney Branch led the way with 21 points, followed by senior guard Taylor Schippers (16 pts), sophomore forward Stevi Parker (10 pts) and freshman guard Chanell Hayes (10 pts). The Ladyjacks improved to 27-17 all-time in season openers with the victory. SETBACK IN RUSTON: After a tightly contested first half, the Stephen F. Austin women s basketball team couldn t keep the pace at Louisiana Tech last Saturday night, falling 76-44 in the Ladyjacks first road game of the year inside Thomas Assembly Center. Just a one-point game at the intermission, the Lady Techsters opened things up with a 32-4 third quarter and never looked back. Freshman guard Chanell Hayes led the Ladyjacks offensively with 12 points on 5-for-11 shooting. Senior guard Taylor Schippers and sophomore forward Stevi Parker each provided eight points while junior Brentney Branch chipped in seven. HELPING HAND: The Ladyjacks tallied 27 assists in the season opener against UT-Tyler and dished out nine more against LA Tech on Saturday night for an average of 18.0 assists per game this year. That total is currently the best in the Southland Conference and ranks 34th nationally. Senior Taylor Schippers is averaging 4.5 assists a night after two games, which is the fourth-best in the league. SHOOTING THREES: Junior Brentney Branch and senior Taylor Schippers have started the year red hot from beyond the three-point arc. Each girl has made six triples in two games for an average of 3.0 threes per game - the 42nd best average in the country and the best in the Southland Conference. Schippers is 6-for-9 from deep this year and her.667 shooting clip is good for the seventh-most efficient average in the nation. SFA TABBED 2ND/3RD IN SLC PRESEASON POLLS: Coming off a 2014-15 campaign that ended with the Ladyjacks hoisting the program s 17th regular season Southland Conference title, SFA once again has high expectations this season. In preseason polls conducted by the league s sports information directors and coaches, SFA was tabbed second and third, respectfully. Lamar was voted as the favorite by each group. ROSS NAMED PRESEASON ALL-SLC: Junior guard Taylor Ross was selected to the Preseason All-Southland Conference Second Team on Oct. 27. Ross had a breakout year as a sophomore, averaging 14.0 points, 4.7 assists, 3.4 rebounds and 2.2 steals over 31 games. The versatile guard also shot the ball at an efficient rate (.479) from the floor and ended the season ranked third on the team in blocks (14). A 2015 All-SLC Second Team pick, Ross is the top returning scorer for the Ladyjacks. GARNERING ATTENTION: After a solid season in 2014-15 and getting out to a 1-0 start this year, SFA has gained national recognition by different outlets. The Ladyjacks are currently receiving 16 votes in the most recent Mid-Major Top 25 Poll released by CollegeInsider.com on Nov. 17. That would give them a No. 42 ranking if the poll continued past the top 25. NO PLACE LIKE HOME: The Ladyjacks have proven that William R. Johnson Coliseum is one of the toughest women s basketball venues to play in for visitors. Dating back to Nov. 18 of last year, SFA has won 16 straight games at home, which is the eighth-longest active home winning streak in the nation. The last loss in Nacogdoches came in the 2014-15 season opener on Nov. 15 against LA Tech, 76-69. Nacogdoches is currently the 16th toughest city to play in, in all of division one women s college basketball. The Ladyjacks boast a 435-117 record at home since beginning play in 1972. SOUTHLAND DOMINANCE: The Ladyjacks will go for a third consecutive Southland Conference regular season title in 2016 after winning the league championship each of the last two seasons. Already with a league-best 17 regular season crowns, a third straight title in 2016 would make SFA the first team in the league to three-peat since the Ladyjacks accomplished the feat from 2000-02. After losing in the first round of the WNIT to TCU last March, SFA will look to take the next step this season by making its first NCAA Tournament since 2006. NEW MAN IN CHARGE: The Ladyjacks will have a new look during the 2015-16 season after bringing in Mark Kellogg from West Texas A&M as the ninth head coach in program history. Kellogg replaces Brandon Schneider who left after five seasons to coach the women s basketball program at Kansas. In 10 seasons as a head coach prior to SFA, Kellogg compiled a 250-65 (.794) record, including a 154-35 (.815) record in conference games and a 16-7 (.700) mark in NCAA tournament games. 2014-15 Southland Conference Champions (16-2) 2014-15 WNIT First Round NEW FACES IN 2015-16: Senior guard Taylor Schippers and redshirt sophomore forward Stevi Parker are eligible to contribute on the court this year after sitting out the 2015-16 season due to NCAA transfer rules. Schippers, a highly touted guard from Houston, started her collegiate career at Oklahoma State and most recently played at Butler. Parker comes to SFA from Tulsa, where she saw significant playing time. Other new faces for the Ladyjacks include freshmen Kennedy Harris (5-8 guard), KJ Stastny (5-9 guard), Madison Davis (5-11 guard) and Chanell Hayes (5-11 guard). LOOKING AHEAD: After Tuesday night s non-conference battle against LSU-Shreveport, SFA will take to the air to travel to Kansas City, Mo. for a Thanksgiving tournament at UMKC. The Ladyjacks will play SIUE on Friday at 3:30 p.m. before taking on Indiana State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m. @SFA_Athletics/@SFA_WBB #AxeEm 3

Austin Director of Athletics Robert Hill announced the hiring of Mark Kellogg as the Ladyjacks new head women s basketball coach on May 11 prior to the 2015-16 season. Kellogg brings a tradition of winning to Nacogdoches as he has compiled a 250-65 (.794) record in 10 seasons as a head coach, including a 154-35 (.815) record in conference games and a 16-7 (.700) mark in NCAA tournament games. A four-time WBCA Regional Coach of the Year, Kellogg has guided his programs to six conference championships and seven NCAA tournament appearances and currently ranks as the fourth-winningest active coach at the Division II level. Needless to say, we are very excited to have Mark join us, said Hill. There is no doubt he is one of the best young coaches in the nation and his record speaks for itself. Mark has been a winner everywhere he has coached and also has great Texas recruiting ties, which was something we were looking for in a head coach. He inherits a good program but I truly believe he will elevate our women s basketball program. He and his family will also be a great addition to our SFA family as well as the Nacogdoches community. Kellogg comes to SFA from West Texas A&M where he spent two seasons as head coach, leading the Lady Buffs to a 62-6 record and a pair of appearances in the NCAA Division II Elite Eight as well as top-10 finishes. In 2013-14, Kellogg guided West Texas to a 32-3 record and a national runner-up showing, falling to Bentley in the NCAA championship game, ending the season ranked second nationally. This past season, the Lady Buffs went 30-3, advancing to the Elite Eight and were ranked sixth in the final postseason polls, earning Kellogg CaptainU National Coach of the Year honors. During his time in Canyon, Kellogg led West Texas to back-to-back 30-win seasons for the first time in program history as the Lady Buffs led the nation in field goal percentage both years. The 2013-14 Lone Star Conference Coach of the Year, Kellogg guided WT to back-to-back LSC regular season and tournament titles, going 30-2 in conference play. Prior to his time in Canyon, Kellogg spent one season at Northwest Missouri State, leading the Bearcats to a 15-13 record in 2012-13, a nine-win improvement from the previous season. Picked to finish 15th in the MIAA standings, the Bearcats finished eighth, advancing to the quarterfinals of the MIAA tournament. Kellogg earned his first head coaching position at Fort Lewis College in Durango, Colorado, where he compiled a 173-46 (.790) record in seven seasons. The Skyhawks finished no worse than third in the RMAC during his time in Durango, capturing four regular season and two conference tournament titles. He led Fort Lewis to five-straight NCAA tournament appearances from 2007-08 to 2011-12, highlighted by a national runner-up finish in 2009-10 on the heels of a 35-4 season. A three-time RMAC Coach of the Year, Kellogg is the Skyhawks all-time leader in victories (173), conference victories (116), overall winning percentage (.790) and conference winning percentage (.834). He was named the WBCA Regional Coach of the Year in 2010 and 2011. In addition to his successes on the court, Kellogg has placed a major emphasis on success in the classroom as well. His teams were ranked among the WBCA Academic-Top 25 for five-straight seasons, including ranking first nationally in 2011 with a team GPA of 3.72. 37 of his players have earned Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District honors with a pair of Academic All-Americans. Before taking the helm at Fort Lewis, Kellogg spent four seasons as an assistant coach at Montana State from 2001-05. During his time in Bozeman, he helped lead the Bobcats to the Big Sky Championship in 2001-02 and 2002-03 as MSU compiled a 23-game home winning streak, third behind only Connecticut and Stanford during that span. Kellogg began his coaching career at West Texas A&M, spending two seasons as an assistant on the Buff men s team from 1998-2000. West Texas posted a 43-14 record during his two seasons on staff, winning the LSC title and advancing to the NCAA tournament in 1998-99. A native of Richardson, Texas, Kellogg earned two bachelor s degrees in communication arts and physical education from Austin College in 1998. He then earned his master s degree in sport and exercise science from West Texas A&M in 2000. Kellogg and his wife, Trisha, have two children a six-year-old son, Camden, and a five-year-old daughter, Kayli. @SFA_Athletics/@SFA_WBB #AxeEm
