FANTASY STRATEGY PLAY Drafting a dominant fantasy football team requires preparation, strategy and a lot of luck. We can t help with the latter, but we can help you make the most of your draft day. Here are some sure-fire tips from fantasy football experts that will have you smiling when Week 1 of the NFL season rolls around. DRAFT STAR POWER EARLY, FILL HOLES LATER Your first few picks should be can t miss superstars, regardless of position. Draw lines on your cheat sheet to create tiers. Tier 1 should be comprised entirely of superstars. After all the elite-level studs are gone, then you can start drafting for need. WIN YOUR FANTASY FOOTBALL LEAGUE THE ROAD TO A FANTASY FOOTBALL CHAMPIONSHIP STARTS ON DRAFT DAY GO BIG OR GO HOME Once you ve assembled a solid starting lineup, roll the dice on a few backups who are high-risk, high-reward players. Nothing ventured, nothing gained. HAVE A GAMEPLAN, BUT CALL AUDIBLES Pay attention to your competition during the draft. Cross player names off your cheat sheet and react accordingly. If you re on the clock and need a quarterback, but everyone who drafts before your next pick already has a QB, you should hold off on taking a QB. DON T DRAFT PEYTON MANNING AT LEAST, NOT EARLY. REMEMBER, THIS IS A NEW SEASON YOU DON T GET LAST YEAR S STATS OR PEYTON S 55 TDS. AVOID ROOKIES Last year, 14 rookies were selected in the top 200 of most drafts. Of that group, only four outperformed their draft status. The other 10 first-year phenom wannabes were nothing more than over-hyped disappointments on the waiver wire. INVEST IN SOPHOMORE STUDS AT WR Wideouts often take dramatic strides during their second season. This year, Keenan Allen and Cordarrelle Patterson headline that group of potential breakouts, but there are plenty of second-year sleepers like Justin Hunter, Terrance Williams and Kenny Stills. LOCK UP THE BEST BACKUPS AT RB Running backs get hurt. It s the nature of the beast (mode?). Only three RBs have an active streak of three-straight 1,000-yard seasons. Draft handcuffs, but not just the backup to the primary RB on your own team make sure they re the best handcuffs available. WAIT ON DRAFTING A TE OTHER THAN JIMMY GRAHAM AND A HEALTHY ROB GRONKOWSKI, THERE IS NO TIGHT END WORTH REACHING FOR. ONCE GRAHAM AND THE GRONK ARE GONE, THE TE MARKET TAKES A STEEP DECLINE. DON T PASS ON A QUALITY RB OR WR TO GET A TE. EVERYTHING IN MODERATION Don t go overboard drafting any one position. Ultimately, you need a balanced starting lineup to win. It won t do you any good to have big-time WR depth on the bench if you re lacking a good group at starting RB. Also, don t drink too much at your draft. Drunk drafting can ruin fantasy football teams. Manning: Peter Brouillet; Gronkowski: Tim Clark Graham: Michael DeMocker, Nola.com/The Times-Picayune/Landov 2 /FANTASY

FANTASY STRATEGY PLAY CALL THE DR. These 15 players are all good enough to be fantasy starters. TRENT RICHARDSON, RB, COLTS It s put up or shut up time for the Alabama slammer who went No. 3 overall in the 2012 NFL Draft. He s on Andrew Luck s team, after all. That makes everyone better, right? CHRIS JOHNSON, RB, JETS The sprinting star formerly known as CJ2K may be delusional to think he can rush for 2,000 yards again, but the rest of the world is nuts to doubt a guy who has six straight 1,000-yard seasons and zero games missed due to injury. DARREN SPROLES, RB, EAGLES The human pinball has always been a point-per-reception dynamo. Now offensive mad scientist Chip Kelly has a chance to work his magic with the 5'6" triple-threat. FUNNY FANTASY TEAM NAMES These team names will make your league laugh out loud. MONEY MANZIEL CRY ME A RIVERS CALL ME THE BREES OMAHA! OMAHA! EMMANUEL SANDERS, WR, BRONCOS Peyton Manning s newest target should pick up the statistical slack left by departed free agent Eric Decker. GOLDEN TATE, WR, LIONS Remember Herman Moore and Brett Perriman? Well, Calvin Johnson and Tate are the best WR tandem Detroit has had since those guys despite Matt Millen s best-laid plans once upon a time. STEVE SMITH, WR, RAVENS The Smith Bros. (no relation) of Torrey and Steve will give quarterback Joe Flacco and new offensive coordinator Gary Kubiak aerial options deep and over the middle. JUSTIN HUNTER, WR, TITANS A 6'4" wideout with 4.44 speed and a 39.5-inch vertical, Hunter was a first-down and touchdown machine as a rookie last year, with 18 catches for 354 yards (19.7 ypc) and four scores in limited action. This year, Hunter will have the opportunity to break out. RED HOT JULIUS PEPPERS CLOWNEY QUESTION BRO J.J. S.W.A.T.T. WHO SNO.1? Where have you gone, LaDainian Tomlinson? These days, having the first overall pick in a fantasy football draft is a little more complicated than in the early-to-mid 2000s, when L.T. had a five-year run in which he recorded at least 1,700 total yards and 17 total TDs every season with arguably the greatest fantasy campaign in Internet history, when he posted 2,343 total yards and 33 total TDs in 2006. But don t let the No. 1 overall pick stress you out. There are several good candidates to anchor your fantasy football team. These are four options for numero uno. LESEAN MCCOY, RB, EAGLES The league s reigning rushing champ (1,607 yards) is the focal point of Chip Kelly s hurry-up-and-run offense. McCoy is in his prime, entering his age-26 season, and appears poised for another 2,000-total-yard, double-digit- TD year. JAMAAL CHARLES, RB, CHIEFS Andy Reid s arrival in K.C. was good for more than just BBQ joints. Giving the ball to Jamaal resulted in 329 touches for the 199-pound former Texas track star last season. Expect a similar workload for the 27-year-old this season. McCoy: Mark Langello; Charles: Tim Umphrey ADRIAN PETERSON, RB, VIKINGS All Day has scored 91 total TDs in seven seasons. He s had at least 10 trips to the end zone every season and rushed for at least 1,200 yards in six of seven years. This is A.D. s last season in his 20s, but the 6'1", 217-pounder has no signs of slowing down. CALVIN JOHNSON, WR, LIONS Megatron has been a fantasy-football scoring machine. Johnson is 6'5" and 236 pounds with no statistical peers outside of the G.O.A.T., Jerry Rice. No one ever regrets drafting Johnson, who is a threat to break his own receiving yards record (1,964 in 2012). 2014 Wm. Wrigley Jr. Company. All Rights Reserved.
