YOUTH & SAILING -SUMMER 2014 As the icicles of winter melt away, we are eagerly planning for summer, sunshine and sailing at the Avalon Yacht Club. Our 2014 Youth Sailing Program will take place Monday through Thursday for two successive 4-week sessions, beginning June 23, 2014. The first session will culminate on Family Day with swimming and sailing exhibitions, races and awards. The second session will finish with Family Night & perpetual awards. We encourage all AYC families to enroll their children or grandchildren in what will be, for many, the beginning of wonderful lifelong memories and friendships. Kevin Strogen will return this summer as Sailing Director. Most of our instructors from last summer will be back again this summer, so we are excited to have an experienced staff. We will continue to provide excellent sailing instruction, while focusing on the safety of our program, and integrate new ways to stimulate the campers and provide the foundation for a lifelong love of sailing. Our program begins with Arts & Crafts and swimming for five and six year olds. We have developed an energetic number of projects for our youngest fledglings as we welcome them to their first years in our summer program. We look forward to enrolling any child in Arts & Crafts who has reached his/her fifth birthday by the start of the session. Arts & Crafts activities and swimming will begin at 10:00AM and end promptly at noon; these campers will not stay for lunch. Our Introduction to Sailing class will admit children who have reached the age of seven years by the start of the session in which they are enrolled. Although the Intro class is from 10:00AM to noon, many Intro students choose to stay for lunch. Intro students must be picked up by 12:30pm. All other sailing classes are from 10:00 AM to 3:00 PM. All sailors are required to pass a swim test, which will be given on the first day of each session. Sailing classes will be organized as follows: A. Introduction to Sailing is a two-hour class for children ages seven to eight years old with no previous sailing experience. The primary focus is to make the students comfortable on the water in small sailboats and prepare them for the Level I Optimist class. These young sailors will learn the various parts of the Optimist as well as the basic concepts of tacking, reaching and running. They sail with other children and there is always an instructor in the boat. Based on each child's confidence level, they may also be encouraged to trim the sail or steer the boat. Due to boat availability, the Optimist or Sunfish may be used for the on-water portion of this class. Boat ownership is not required. B. Level I Optimist This class is designed to give the beginner sailor a strong fundamental base of sailing skills such as rigging, tacking, jibing, sail trim and hiking. Sailors are generally 8 and 9 years old and may have had some sailing experience. Students will begin the class sailing with an instructor or in pairs but the overall goal is to make each sailor comfortable and proficient sailing alone in the Optimist. As the skills evolve, basic racing may also be introduced near the end of the summer. While boat ownership is not required, the l imited number of club owned Optimists can severely limit on-water instruction time. For this reason boat ownership is strongly encouraged. C. Level II Optimist (Green Fleet) is the next step for sailors who have completed the Level I Optimist class. Level II Optimist sailors will sail alone with a particular focus on learning to race. They will continue to develop their skills of sail trim, steering, tacking, jibing and hiking. They will also learn how to navigate a race course as well as learn the basic racing rules of sailing. All Level II Optimist sailors are encouraged to race in the local AYC Optimist races held on Saturdays in the summer. As their skills advance, Level II Optimist sailors may also travel to compete in the Green Fleet at various South Jersey Summer Series events on Thursdays. Boat ownership is required. D. Level III Optimist (Competitive Racing) is for sailors who have completed one summer racing in the Green fleet. Competitive Optimist sailors will continue to develop the racing skills which were learned in the Opti II. More advanced skills such as roll tacking, identifying clear air and determining the favored end of the starting line will also be taught. These sailors are expected to travel to South Jersey Summer Series Regattas on Thursdays where they will compete in the White or Blue fleets according to their age. Boat ownership is required.

E. Level IV Optimist (Advanced Racing) is for older Optimist sailors who have completed the Opti III class. Sailors are expected to travel to South Jersey Summer Series Regattas on Thursdays where they will compete in the Blue or Red fleets according to their age. The advanced racing skills that were introduced in the Opti III class are continually reinforced. Team Racing will also be introduced for the first time. As Team Racing events are identified, a team or teams from this class will be formed to compete against other clubs. Boat ownership is required. F. Beginner Sunfish instruction is offered for sailors who have completed Intro to Sailing and would like to continue sailing in the Sunfish. This class is designed for younger sailors who are not yet ready to sail alone. Sailors sail in pairs and work to improve basic sailing skills. As skills develop over the course of the summer, basic racing will be introduced. A boat is required for every two sailors and it is the responsibility of the families to provide access to this equipment. G. Intermediate Sunfish instruction is offered for sailors who have completed the Beginner Sunfish class and are comfortable sailing alone. Sailors practice through drills, games and racing, with an emphasis on safety. A range of drills and games are used to keep the program fun while expanding the sailors' breadth of sailing knowledge. While racing is an element of the curriculum of this class, there is no expectation to travel to regattas at other clubs. Participation in the local AYC Sunfish races held on Saturdays in the summer is strongly encouraged. Boat ownership is required. H. Advanced Sunfish is for older sailors who have completed the Junior/Intermediate Sunfish class and wish to continue instruction in the Sunfish. The Advanced Sunfish Racing class is an alternative, not a prerequisite, to the Advanced Laser and 420 Class. The Advanced Sunfish class has an increased emphasis on all aspects of racing including sail trim and boat trim as well as the racing rules of sailing. Participation in the local AYC Sunfish races held on Saturdays in the summer is strongly encouraged. Sailors may also travel to SJSS regattas if a Sunfish fleet is offered. Travel is not expected to be extensive with this class. Boat ownership is required. I. Laser & 420 (Advanced Racing) is for older sailors who have successfully completed either the Level IV Optimist or the Advanced Sunfish Class. This class focuses on all aspects of rigging, trimming and racing the Laser (4.7 and Radial rigs) and Club 420 (including sailing with a spinnaker). Members of this class will be expected to travel to South Jersey Summer Series Regattas on Thursdays where they will compete in either the Laser 4.7, Laser Radial or 420 fleets. A small number of club owned Lasers and 420s are available for the use of this class which limits the class size to seven sailors. Sailors who own their own Laser or 420 will be offered a position in this class above the 7 person limit. The placement of students in appropriate classes will be at the discretion of the Director based on skill level, experience, size and age. Whether interested in racing or looking for a fun way to spend the summer, we encourage all AYC youth to participate in our program. Every student must have a properly fitted life jacket, which must be worn on the water at all times. It is important that a whistle be attached to the life jacket. Every student must wear shoes or sandals at all times during the program. We encourage individual doilies for all boat owners. They help to protect the sailboat and speed boat cleanup at the end of the day. The Travel Racing Team is made up of sailors in the Level III & IV Optimist classes as well as the Laser & 420 class. AYC sailors travel to compete in the South Jersey Summer Series regattas on Thursdays. Members of MAYRA including AYC host races that take place from Cape May to Cooper River. As well there are additional worthwhile races such as the Powder Puff Regatta, an all girl competition. Each of these regattas offers a green fleet race (ie. the course is simple and very close to shore). We encourage our Level II Optimist sailors to participate in as a fun low-key introduction to competitive racing. There is a $75 Travel Racing Fee that covers extra costs incurred such as trailers, supplies, overtime, etc. An adult must be present and responsible for their sailor at each event.

A boat rack fee must be paid for each sailboat or kayak stored on the AYC lot at any time during the summer months. Due to space constraints, we will again issue half season stickers for sunfish and optis. All sailboats and kayaks on AYC property must display a current AYC sticker. Stickers may be purchased for: 1) the season, 2) the July session or 3) the August session. All July stickers will expire on July 19 at which time the boat should be removed to make room for August stickers, which will activate on July 20. After payment of the fee, a registration sticker will be available for pick-up at the front desk, beginning Memorial Day weekend. After Memorial Day, stickers will be available for purchase at the front desk. Please pick up your sticker, and place this sticker on the stern of your boat. Boats and kayaks that do not display a current sticker may be moved from the boatyard. A season sticker must also be purchased for any travel sailboat trailer stored on the lot. Seasonal powerboat trailer storage in the AYC boatyard is not permitted. Registration for the Youth Sailing program is by mail only, not in person at the club at any time. Enclosed you will find a Registration Form listing the fees, a Parental Waiver and Consent Form, and a Medical Form. Please complete all three forms for each child. Please indicate whether you are signing up for one session (Half Season, 6/23/14 7/18/14 or 7/21/14-8/14/ 14) or for the full eight weeks (Season). A copy of the birth certificate or passport must be enclosed with the completed registration package for each child entering the Arts & Crafts or Intro programs. Please return all completed forms with payment to Helene Moran at AYC, P.O. Box 321, Dennisville, NJ 08214 by 5/1/14 to ensure consideration of your child. As in the past, membership type and date of receipt of all three completed forms, with payment, will prioritize enrollment. We cannot guarantee a spot in the program for any child whose package is returned after the 511 deadline. To apply, payment must accompany completed forms. A late payment charge of $50 will be applied to all applications postmarked or completed after May 1, 2014. Please enroll your child for an entire 4-week session; no partial-session payments will be accepted. Again this year, because card fees have become very expensive for the program, we will not be accepting credit cards as payment for registrations. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you in advance for your cooperation. We ask that students who prefer to buy lunch prepay on a session or season basis. We will continue to review comments regarding options on the daily menu. Children are welcome to bring their own lunches, and a water cooler is available. We are anticipating a safe and exciting summer of sailing and fun for all. We welcome any questions, comments and suggestions; we hope you will feel free to contact us with your thoughts.
