Navy, 11-9 Game Preview Looking to bounce back after suffering back-to-back one-goal losses to Colgate and Georgetown, the Navy lacrosse team (4-6) will play host to Maryland (7-2) Friday evening at Navy- Marine Corps Memorial Stadium... faceoff is set for 7:00 pm... Friday night s contest is presented by PNC Bank and STX. Tonight s Game Presented by Playing without senior midfielder Andy Warner, the Mids put forth a valiant effort that included a three-goal run to close within one over the final 4:30... while freshman attackman Tucker Hull led the offense with three goals and an assist, junior keeper RJ Wickham produced a careerhigh 20 saves in keeping the nation s top-ranked goal scorer, Davey Emala, in check. Maryland is coming off a stellar performance in which the Terps held sixth-ranked Virginia to just two second half goals en route to a 12-7 win in Charlottesville... midfielders John Haus and Joe Cummings combined to score eight of the Terps 12 goals, while senior attackman dealt out a team-high four assists to go along with his two goals Friday s contest will be televised by CBS Sports Network with Dave Ryan (play by play) and former Duke All- American and Tewaaraton Trophy winner Matt Danowski (analyst) calling he action. Maryland Ties First-year Maryland head coach John Tillman returns to the Academy for his first contest standing on the opposite sideline from the Mids... Tillman was head coach Richie Meade s assistant at the Naval Academy from 1996-07 and was the offensive coordinator his last six years... Tillman was on staff during the Mids memorable Memorial Day ride in 2004 when Navy faced Syracuse in the National Championship Game. Maryland grad and third-year Terrapin assistant coach Ryan Moran spent three seasons (2006-08) as an assistant coach for the Midshipmen... Moran also served as the head coach at the Naval Academy Prep School during the 2005 campaign. Taking the Field In... 10 Generally a defensive battle, the winning team in the annual Navy-Maryland game has reached doubledigit goals just twice in the last 12 meetings... Navy defeated the Terps 10-4 in 2009 and Maryland beat the Mids 11-9 a year ago. 9 Coming off a career-best 20-save performance against Georgetown, junior keeper RJ Wickham needs nine saves to take sole possession of 10th on the Mids career saves list. 8 The Mids have scored eight or more goals in nine of their 10 games this season. 7 With 14 assists this spring, attackman Tucker Hull stands seventh on Navy s all-time freshamn assists list... he trails sixth-place Ian Dingman who dealt out 17 assists in 2003. 6 Six of Navy s 2011 opponents are ranked in this week s edition of the USILA Coaches Poll - Johns Hopkins (3), North Carolina (5), Maryland (7), Army (13), Bucknell (15) and Colgate (20)... additionally, Loyola is receiving votes. 5 Since the start of the 2004 season, Navy owns a 46-5 record when scoring 10 or more goals. The Mids are 3-2 this season when scoring 10 or more goals. 4 Attackman Sam Jones is ranked fourth nationally in points per game by a freshman... Jones is averaging 3.20, while teammate Tucker Hull is No. 3 with a 3.30 points per game clip. 3 Senior midfielder Andy Warner is just three points shy of becoming the 29th player in school history to reach the 100-point milestone. 2 Navy has played just two games this season where it has not scored an extra-man goal (North Carolina and Colgate)... ironically neither team scored an extra-man goal in those two contests... Maryland is 0-for-4 on extra-man against the Mids in the last two meetings. 1 Eight of the last 12 games played between Navy and Maryland have been decided by one goal... the Mids are 0-4 in one-goal games this season Schedule / Results 4-6 / 2-3 Home: 3-1 Away: 1-5 Neutral: 0-0 February Date Rk Opponent (Rk) Result / Time 12 RV/NR VMI W 14-8 19 RV/NR at Loyola (14/14) L 8-9 25 NR/RV at N. Maryland leads the series, 51-33-1, however, the Midshipmen have won five of the last seven contests, including a 10-4 victory the last time the two battled in Annapolis (2009). Maryland also holds a 27-20-1 series lead in games played in Annapolis. Eight of the last 12 games played between the two teams have been decided by one goal, including four of the last six meetings... meanwhile, four of the last six games played at Navy-Marine Corps Memorial Stadium have been decided by one goal. Just three players on Navy s roster have scored goals against Maryland... senior midfielder Andy Warner owns three points (2-1) against the Terps, while junior midfielder Nikk Davis has two (1-1)... senior defensive midfielder Brian Striffler has also scored a goal against Maryland. Navy s three starting attackmen - junior Taylor Reynolds and freshmen Tucker Hull and Sam Jones - will make their first appearance in the Navy-Maryland rivalry. Making his debut against the Terps a year ago, keeper RJ Wickham turned back 17 Maryland shots while giving up 11 goals. Navy s 9-6 win over Maryland in 2004 is the only document win by the Mids over a No. 1-ranked opponent in program history. The 20 combined goals marked the largest scoring output by the two teams combined since 1998 when Maryland defeated the Midshipmen, 21-7. Meanwhile, the win by the Terps was their first over the Midshipmen at Byrd Stadium since 2002. After finding itself down 1-0 with just over five minutes to play in the opening period, Navy put together a 3-0 run that extended into the second quarter thanks to its midfield tandem of Joe Lennon and Patrick Moran. Moran sent his pass to Lennon who punched in his first of three goals on the afternoon. With one minute exactly on the clock, Moran s extra-man s sidewinder from 10 yards out scooted past Maryland keeper Brian Phipps to give the Mids a 2-1 advantage. Navy carried over the momentum in the second period when attackman Andy Warner found Lennon for a long shot from the left wing. Back-to-back turnovers by the Mids would put the ball right back in Maryland s hands and eventually the Terps would take advantage of it. Actually, junior attackman Grant Catalino would take advantage as he put together a hat trick in less than three minutes time and helped the Terps take a 4-3 advantage at the half. The Mids wasted little time in evening the score as midfielder Nikk Davis wheeled his way down the left side of the field, switched hands and fired in the game-tying goal at the 13:49 mark in the third. The Terps came back guns a blazing, outscoring Navy 4-1 over the next five minutes. It turned into the Ryan young-to-travis Reed show as the tandem paired up for three of the four goals in the run that turned the momentum towards the Terps and gave Maryland an 8-5 lead, the largest lead by either team in the contest. Navy refused to lie down, however, as senior attackman Kyle Kapron scored three straight for the Mids, with a Maryland goal sandwiched between the second and third goal, to close the gap to one at 9-8. But every time Navy would close to within one, Maryland had an answer. Following kapron s third goal, Reed scored his fourth goal of the game. A minute later, Navy again trimmed the lead to one when Lennon turned in his first hat trick of the season on a shot that caught the inside corner of the far pipe. Maryland added an insurance goal with 7:16 left when young s five-yard shot from the left side made its way in for the final, 11-9. Goalkeeper RJ Wickham turned aside 17 shots, his 10th double-digit save game of the season. The Mids man-down defense held Maryland in check. The Terps came into the game ranked No. 2 nationally in extra-man offense, but the Mids stymied their attack and Maryland ended the day 0-for-2. Hull joined Navy s all-time freshman assists list following the Lafayette game (3-12)... he is the first rookie to add his name to the list since Ian Dingman in 2003... Dingman dealt out 17 assists as a freshman and ranks sixth... Hull is just the fourth player under Richie Meade s watch among the list. Going into Friday s game against the Terps, Hull is seventh on the list and trails sixth-place Dingman by just three helpers. Navy s leading scorer with 33 points, Hull joined the Mids all-time freshman points leader board following his three-goal, one-assist effort at Georgetown (4-1)... he stands in a three-way tie for eighth on the list alongise James Chambers (1946) and Nick Mirabito (2005), who was the last Navy player to join the list. With his goal at Holy Cross (3-19), Jones moved into a tie for 10th place on Navy s all-time freshman goals scored list alongside National Lacrosse Hall of Famer Jeff Long (1974)... Jones stands tied for ninth on the list with 21 goals and trails eighth-place Brendan Schneck (1977) by just one goal. Meanwhile, Jones also dealt out an assist against Holy Cross to move into the freshman assists list where he currently sits ninth with 11 helpers... he needs two assists to tie eighth-place Mike Chanenchuk (1976). Sitting just outside of the top 10 in points is Jones who has amassed 32 points to date... he is just one point shy of joining the list. Jones turned in four goals in his Navy debut against VMI (2-12), the best goal-output by a Navy freshman since Basil Daratsos scored four goals against Colgate on March 21, 2007. The rookie scored four goals for a second time when he put forth a five-point effort in Navy s opener at Lehigh... he is now just the second player under Richie Meade s watch to score four goals twice in his rookie season, joining Ian Dingman (2003). Hull, meanwhile, scored four goals at Bucknell.
