W dy Times February 2012 A Woodland Hills Junior High Publication Cheer! Alana Ludovici Officer Sanders Chazadee Miller I have written about a police officer who works at our school this year. I m sure you have seen him since he is nearly seven feet tall. His name is Officer Sanders and he works for the Swissvale police department. Here is some of what we talked about. I esha Morrison, Katelyn Brimage, Niaesha Ramsey Most Fridays, you can see a group of girls wearing black and turquoise cheerleading uniforms ready to cheer, dance, and shout at the basketball games after school. They wear their uniforms on the day of home games to show school spirit. Their motto is, Cheering is what we do, leaders are what we are. Tryouts were held in the fall. The girls worked very hard to learn every cheer and all the moves to make the varsity or junior varsity teams. Ms. Lisa deblanc, cheerleader sponsor and coach, had the difficult job of making the final selections. Katelyn Brimage commented, Miss Lisa is an awesome coach who makes cheering fun and helps you learn every cheer. Currently, the varsity team has twelve members including captains Alli Burns and Talia Spears. The junior varsity team has ten members including captain Mya Cole. Woody Times page 2 Fudge Truffle Cheesecake Noah Thiem Ingredients 1 ½ cup vanilla wafer crumbs ½ cup confectioners sugar 1/3 cup unsweetened cocoa powder 1/3 cup butter 2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips 3 (8 ounce) packages cream cheese 1 (14 ounce) sweetened condensed milk 4 eggs 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract Directions Pre heat oven to 300 degrees F. In a large mixing bowl, mix together vanilla wafers, confectioners sugar, cocoa, and butter by hand. Press ingredients into a 9in. spring form pan. In the top of a double boiler, melt the chocolate chips, making sure that they are smooth. In a large bowl, beat cream cheese until fluffy with an electric mixer. Gradually beat in the condensed milk until smooth. Mix in melted chocolate chips, eggs, and vanilla. Beat with an electric mixer on low speed until the ingredients are thoroughly blended. Pour the filling into the prepared crust. Bake at 300 degrees F (150 degrees C) for 55 minutes. The cake will seem underbaked in the center, but will continue to cook after you remove it from the oven. Wendy s vs. BK Lamarr Cooley Wendy s or Burger King? This is a common question asked to determine which is the better fast food selling restaurant. Obviously it s Wendy s because their food is better tasting. To prove it, I asked students of my 7th grade class which one they thought was better. The results proved that Wendy s is better. Only two people chose Burger King. One reason Wendy s is better is because they have a dollar menu with good foods, like the Crispy Chicken Sandwich. For only $1.00 each, you can get a cheeseburger, a Frosty, a chicken wrap, or for the little ones, 5 piece spicy chicken nuggets. My favorite food at Wendy s is the Spicy Chicken Sandwich, which is way better than Burger king. One of the voters who say Wendy s is better said, I like Wendy s better because they have great prices. If you go to Burger King, you will find workers on the phone and forgetting your orders. If you are allergic to tomatoes, they will probably carelessly put tomatoes on your sandwich. And if you want cheesy tots, guess what? They stopped selling them. The worst thing about Burger King is that they ll change the price up by $1.00 if you ask how much does this cost. One voter of Wendy s said, My name is Rhett and I hate Burger King. So there you have it, readers. Remember to go to Wendy s if you want quality food.
page 3 February 2012 The squad is focused at practice. CHEER from page 1 To maintain eligibility, the girls can have no suspensions or failing grades. The girls would like the staff and other students to see them as role models. Alana Ludovici said, Cheerleading is not just looking cute; it s hard work and a commitment. Plus the cheers that we learn are from high school teams. Currently, the cheerleaders practice twice a week. They performed at the bullying prevention rally and the talent show and started the year with new pom poms. There will be a scratcher fund raiser to raise money for a banquet. Listen for details and help support the cheerleading team. Miss Lisa runs the show.

Woody Times page 8 Nessie Stuart Tartal Boy s Basketball Update Quraun Smith The Loch Ness Monster or "Nessie" for short is a legend some claim to have seen as a great beast. I think she is real. Let s go back in time to before "Nessie" became famous. It was an average day at Loch Ness in the Highlands of Scotland, when a giant monster came out of the water. Some people think they have photographed her. A few years later she came to be the greatest thing to happen to Loch Ness. In 2008 there was a movie based on her called Water Horse. What I think is that she is a plesiosaur trapped in Loch Ness by a cave. And as the meteor hit the earth, "Nessie" survived. She is the last dinosaur on the planet that has not evolved. We started our season by playing the Plum Mustangs at home. We lost, but after that we went to McKeesport and came out with a win (25-20). It was an exciting experience because it was our first win. The Tigers were in the lead in the first half but we pulled out all the stops and it paid off. The next game was against Gateway. We almost came out with a win but unfortunately we did not play as good as we should have. After that we had to work harder to make sure we did not lose the next game which was Kiski Area. We started the game well and ended victoriously (31-26). Penn Hills was the next team on the schedule. We played hard against our rivals but we came out on the losing end. It was very upsetting but we had to keep are heads up and get ready for another game against the Plum Mustangs on their homecourt. This time, we are coming back victorious. February 2012 page 9 Jared s Fun Facts: Where Did It go? Jared Braun You would be super surprised where Oreos have gone in the past couple of years. In 1998, Post cereals launched a breakfast cereal called Oreo O s. It was on the shelves for ten years from 1998 to 2007. You cannot find it in the United States any more; it is only sold in South Korea now. In 2006, Domino s added a pizza called the Oreo Pizza. It had a light crust with icing sauce and an Oreo cookie toping. It is on the dessert menu at Domino s, but it may not be at every Domino s today due to low popularity and small advertisement. Oreos have done a lot over the last couple years even changing the Oreo itself. They are double-sized, filled with different colored icing, and have a cake crust. You can only wonder what they will do next. Jokes by Jared Jared Braun Where can you get a milkshake? From a nervous cow What car did Luke Skywalker buy? A toy-yoda Why did the donut go the dentist? To get a filling TEACHER: George, go to the map and find North America. GEORGE: Here it is! TEACHER: Correct. Now, class, who discovered America? CLASS: George! SANDERS from page 1 Sanders: Depends. One day it can be busy, the next it could be quiet. In a typical day I respond to four to eight calls. In a week I respond to about fifty- six calls. Miller: What do you like to do in your spare time? Sanders: Spend time with family Miller: What is your dream vacation? Sanders: Traveling to different countries around the world. Miller: Where do you see yourself in 20 years? Sanders: Still working in law enforcement, just in a warmer climate like somewhere down south. Mr. Smith celebrates Black History Month by wearing traditional African attire. If you want to be a police officer, it can be a very stressful job. A lot of police men/women die in the line of duty. An estimated 138 police officers die each year. So if you want to be a police officer, BE VERY CAREFUL OF YOUR SURROUNDINGS!
Woody Times page 10 The Gaming Corner Rhett Spadacene Welcome to a new issue of the gaming corner. Today s game is a very fun game called Punch-Out, for the Nintendo Wii. Punch-Out starts when Little Mac, a taken out champ, must rise the ranks once again to make his dream come true, but to do that he must fight deadly opponents. Game Play The game play is solid. Using the controls are a breeze. To use, you can use the wiimote side ways, connected with nun chuck, or you can use the wiimote and nun chuck with the wii balance board attachment, if you have it. I will explain the simplest way, the Wiimote side ways. Pressing the two and one button is to punch. If you hold the directional pad up while sideways, you can uppercut. Press the directional pad left and right to dodge. All you have to do is dodge and punch but you can tire out if you get hit. The best way to knock out your opponent out is the star punch. You get it if you catch your enemy off guard. Verdict Punch- Out is a great game. You should get the game and get a heavy weight work out! Want to write for Woody Times?
