NEWNHAM BOWLS CLUB NEWSLETTER Number 30 September, 2016 www.newnhambowls.co.uk www.facebook.com/newnhambowls A SEASON OF TWO HALVES Football is said to be a funny old game and a game of two halves well our C & D and our Meldreth League seasons have shown that bowls too is a funny old game and ours certainly was a season of two halves. In our first nine C & D games we scored 44.5 points but in the second half of the season we only scored 19.5 points. In the Meldreth League we won seven games all season and five of those victories were achieved in our first nine matches. So nobody can say that Newnham members are fair weather bowlers! Despite disappointing second halves to the season finishing 4th after our first season in Division 3 in the C & D League was most creditable. This is our fourth season in the Meldreth League and in two out of the three previous years that we have finished bottom of our Section and so this season has been an improvement. Once again our thanks go to the two Rogers for all of the hard work they put in as captains throughout the season. It obviously took its toll on Roger F as his season came to a premature end when his back gave out. Roger A gave members the chance to get wider experience by playing in different positions and, at times, to captain the team. We will benefit from that next season. Roger A will be standing down as Meldreth Captain and so we will need to elect a new Captain at the AGM.

CLUB COMPETITIONS Thanks again to Irene for organising the competitions and thanks to all those members who participated so as to make them competitions competitive. Congratulations to Les Dewar on getting to the final of the Men s Singles (won by Clint). In the Ladies Singles congratulations go to Janet who despite having played only a few games this season got to the final, where she plays Sue. In the Handicap Singles it was so good to see that none of the usual suspects reached the last four of the competition, so hearty congratulations go to Betty and Andy Page in getting to the final and to Diana and Ian in reaching the semi finals. Graham and Alan Bailey will play Mike Page and Richard Lowe in the Drawn Pairs final which will now be played on the day before we close the Green for the winter. AUSSIE PAIRS COMPETITION This competition was introduced following representations made by some members at the 2015 AGM that they wanted to play more matches during the season. The format was designed to give all players the opportunity to Skip and to see what it is like to be down the other end. The competition has been a great success with the pairings of Mike Page / Betty, Peter Hampson / Diana and Andy Page / Richard all on eight points and all in with a chance of lifting the cup. Our thanks goes to Betty and Mike Holloway for all of the work they have put in to ensure that the competition has been a success.

FOXTON MID WEEK LEAGUE NEXT SEASON To give members the opportunity to play more competitive matches your committee accepted the offer to join the Foxton Mid Week League for the 2017 season. This means that the Aussie Pairs Competition will not take place next season. The Foxton League matches are played every Wednesday afternoon (except for games against Barton which are played on Fridays). There is only one division and so there is no promotion or relegation. The games start at 2.30 and consist of three rinks of triples, centre jack for 18 ends, EBA rules apply. One point is scored for each rink that is won and two points are awarded to the team with the overall highest shot score. Refreshments are kept to a minimum, after each match there is a cup of tea (or coffee) and a biscuits nothing else. It is hoped that members will support this venture so as to give those members who are still at work the chance to play more evening matches during the season. The following clubs are in the Foxton League:- Barton, Coton, Duxford, Foxton, Histon, Great Shelford, Little Shelford, Melbourn, Meldreth, Sawston Clint has agreed to captain the team for the first season and will give more details at the AGM.

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY PRESIDENT S DAY Will be Sunday 4 th September from 1.00 pm. A fun afternoon of bowls, family members and friends welcome. BBQ and other food, cost 5.00 a head.
