Historical Highlight Fashion was our Passion In talking to any long-time member of the SIU Women s Club about the Club s history, sooner or later she will speak fondly of the style shows. These style, or fashion, shows featured members of the Club, and sometimes their children, modeling current or period fashions as part of a themed event. Style shows were held at the Fall Tea, Spring Meeting, at Women s Day, and joint events with the Edwardsville Women s Club. For some of the shows, the models walked a platform, but others were informal with the models walking among the guests. The First Fashion Show was in the fall of 1955, at the first meeting of the year and hosted by Mrs. Dorothy Morris. Apparently the show was a hit for it was the first of many for decades to come. They were so popular that the Fall Style Show in 1959 was attended by 500 guests. The Club began hosting a Woman s Day event in the spring of 1954 to promote SIU and honor a Leader of the Year. This went on annually until 1962, when Dorothy Morris was honored at a luncheon attended by 757 guests. Added to this special event was a fashion show titled 100 Years of Southern Illinois Women featuring 58 costumes ranging from lingerie to sports outfits to ball and bridal gowns modeled by members. The idea of Women s Day events came and went, but the style shows went on. In the 1960s, the women of the Edwardsville Club would travel to Carbondale (sometimes Jean Kroenig by plane!) in the spring and our Women s Club would host an event that included a fashion show. For many of these, the clothes were made and modeled by our members. The 1969 program was Snip, Stitch and Save featuring sportswear to formal gowns and included a bridal display. Twenty seven Carbondale members and five Edwardsville members modeled the garments they made themselves. Some of our current members participated in the fashion shows of the 1970s. Vivian Ugent was the General Chairman for the Fall 1973 Fashion Show and Tea, at which 35 members modeled sportswear, loungewear, rainwear or evening wear from eight area shops. The 1975 Fall Tea featured a fashion show with the theme American Fashions for the American Beauty. Period gowns from the SIU Museum and modern fashions from area clothing stores were modeled by club members, including Jean Kroenig (cochairman of the show) and Toni Intravaia. Over time all of the small shops that supported the style shows went out of business and the style shows came to an end, but the fond memories live on. Blanche Sloan (left), Alice Mitchell, and Vivian Ugent Acknowledgements Thank you to the SIU Morris Library Special Collections Research Center for housing the historical documents of the SIU Women s Club and to Anne Marie Hamilton- Brehm for her assistance.
