Issue 2, June 2012 It s a family affair! Newsletter of the South West Touring Car Club Mum Tracey has been waiting for just this moment, Samantha, Sarah and Sally all standing on the podium together! ( If Mum was hoping that was the end of racing when that happened I think what has actually happened is that the competition has just stepped up a notch!). The girls are posting times as quick as some of the Experts with some fantastic driving and some very well presented cars (thanks Dad!). Not only does this family drive well, they are great examples of just what this club is about, having the whole family involved. Dad Peter is the man who lets you out of the pits, onto the track (and the girls help there as well when they aren t racing) and Mum Tracey is one of the trusty stopwatchers in the timekeeping hut. (If you look in the picture below you will see a rare picture of Tracey in a moment of freedom from stopwatching!) Spectators get prime view 2012 has seen some changes to the track and spectator area trialled. In an effort to create a safer and more spectator friendly area we have relocated the track exit point. It is now beside the track entry point and this has given us a lovely grassed area for spectators that runs the full length of the track edge. Spectators can be seated near their drivers and still be able to keep the under 14 s out of the pits (and with a direct line to the food van).. Feedback was that the new spectator area and driver exit worked very well. Volunteers Award $25 Fuel Voucher Round 1 Winners David Veenstra Andrew Barsby These businesses support the SWTCC.. Volunteers Thank you, thank you thank you This is exactly how we want to see our lovely St John Ambulance crew spend their day, relaxing in the sun!!!! Keep it up ladies. We couldn t run our events without you Adam Barrett, half of the father, son commentating duo you did the new hut proud! New flaggies hut, new Starter safety zone, it s all happening here, and that doesn t even include the racing! The Dixon clan on duty as Pit Marshals fantastic job as usual. What can I say three very wise monkeys! The job of Timekeepers Assistant (or Chief Button Pusher) is all go!

Autocross Round 1, 27th May Yahoo!!! The autocross season is here at last. Big thanks to Garry for the track preparation, and thank you to all the volunteers who keep our sport going, where would we be without them. Corner 5 Photos courtesy of Rex Rattenbury Adam Barrett Well what a day! Seemed a bit fast for some, or was it just the joy of playing in the dirt, after the summer lay off, a few bruises but no one really hurt. It was good to see some drivers from seasons past returning to the track, enjoy the lower grade fellers, now I ve seen what you can do, all up to a higher grade, and tougher competition for trophies. Some new comers too, who have found the joy of autocross. Still it s all good fun, and everybody left with a big smile, especially myself, no major blunders on my first event and a trophy too! Kathy Miles No major problems with any paper work, most were on time. Just a gentle reminder that entries close on the Wednesday before the event and the running order sorted by Friday. Seane Stone Its good to see that some members have volunteered for flags before the event, remember guys we all have to put in to run the event. Here s to the next event, see you there. A Weekend at the Albany Classic Article by Brian Jarvis Barry Halligan and I made a spur of the moment decision to travel down to Albany to have a look at the hill climbs on Saturday and round the houses on Sunday run by the Vintage Sports Cars Club WA. What a time we had! On Saturday we took up position at the bottom of Mount Clarence to watch the action, everything from 1930 s racing cars to a machine that was described as a 1967 Fiat Abarth TCR. I have never seen a Fiat with a space frame and Mazda rotary engine before, and still having problems visualising it motoring around Rome, it was really fast though and I believe it won the day. Post 1970s Touring & Sports Cars We woke Sunday to large full breakfast, and headed off to view the action. Spent a good hour looking round the pits, some really nice cars, of all ages and types; 1930 s open wheeler s 1950 s, 60 s, 70 s and 80 s sports cars, touring cars and sedans. Off to the circuit and find a good point to view. What a spectacle, if this is Modern Regularity what does racing look. We loved an Escort RS1600 that was all over several Ford Falcon GTHO s like a puppy over mum in the pre 1970 touring cars category. 1967 Fiat Abarth TCR After a walk around the pits a bit of a chat with some competitors and owners, it was here we heard the quote of the weekend. A man sitting by an1928 Chrysler Silverwings was about to tuck into a plate of waffles. You racing we asked? No was the reply. Why? Got a nice car here. They took my licence away, reckoned I m on the wrong side of 80 Pity we said, Aw that s alright it took them 6 years to realise it, so I didn t do too bad!!!. Tony Gilfuis, our Battery All Types sponsor drove his 1951 Mercury 100 speedcar without fear out front against a 1952 BMH Comic Book Special. Tony's friend drove his magnificent 1938 Dodge speedster and another friend drove his MG, both for sale. In the same field was a 1935 Bugatti and a 1935 Lagonda Rapier and a 1928 Ford Model A Cactus cornering in four wheel drifts. 1928 Ford Model A Cactus Albany Main Street transformed! Not quite sure who won what, but everybody, spectators and competitors where having plenty of fun. I found out that this event is done with the same CAMS level 2S licence, same as autocross, how simple can it be. Barry reckons he will take one of his historic sports cars next year, and I m looking for a V8 VB or VC commodore. Modern Regularity here we come.

We are putting together the history of the club and would like to collect : CAMS Training Have you ever thought about becoming a CAMS official? It s easier than you think. If you were out on the hill top hut as a flaggie, and the radio stopped working how could you talk to the Clerk of Course? With the signals you learnt in your officials training of course! photos, newspaper cuttings, newsletters memorabilia We have some items but we also have lots of gaps. Maybe you even have one of the logos with a Bunbury number plate! We can copy your treasures and return them to you safely so please contact me if you have anything you would be willing to share Michelle Lathwell swtcc2010@hotmail.com Thought the Lathwell s new car might get lost in the dust cloud for a moment. Can I cross the track? you ask. Safe to cross replies the Clerk of Course. If you are interested in learning more about being a CAMS official then please speak to one of the committee members or contact CAMS at www.cams.com.au Looks like now Ron is not Event Secretary he has PLENTY of time to share the good news about his first grandchild! Congratulations to old and new Fergusons! Of course new doesn t mean off the showroom floor more of a new assembly. How does Team Carnage get all that great footage for their YouTube clips GoPro Cameras mounted around the place, including on the helmet. If you are going to set up something like this don t forget the mounts need to be on the car for the scrutineer to approve. and Ron even took home a trophy!

Scrutineers Report Sadly this was the look on Rosco s (Chief Scrutineer) face a few times during Round 1 scrutineering. Many cars presented very well as they usually do, but some did not come well prepared at all. Some drivers presented late to the holding area and some of the cars with multiple drivers were not changing the driver number to match the driver. For the new club members you might find it helpful to look at the club handbook which is available on the website. There is a lot of information about the events, car preparation and what is expected on race day. Some of the information you can find in the handbook: Race Day Checklist 1. CAMS license 2. SWTCC membership card 3. Helmet Australian approved (AS 1698) 4. Approved clothing & shoes 5. Vehicle in clean condition to pass scrutineering 6. Approved fire extinguisher correctly mounted to vehicle 7. Tools - jack, car stands, pump, spare wheel, tyre gauge, big hammer etc 8. No loose items in cab 9. Shade, wet weather gear, sunscreen, hat. Available to download at: www.swtcc.com.au Numbers You will get 2 numbers which need to be fitted to either side of your car. If you have multiple entries for the one car, you will get a pair of numbers for each competitor. Make sure that when the car is racing the numbers displayed are the numbers for the current driver. Scrutineering Present your car to the scrutineer clean and ready for competition with all drivers in race clothes, with helmets and scrutineers paperwork. Drivers Briefing ALL DRIVERS MUST ATTEND This will give you up-to-date information on how the event is to be run and any other information that may be useful. Racing: Present yourself to the holding area, on time (with 6 cars ahead of you), in order and ready for competition. Clothing to conform to CAMS regulations (CAMS Schedule D: Apparel) Non flammable Sleeves fastened to reach the wrist and done up from neck to waist. Trousers to cover from waist to ankle.. Suitable enclosed footwear on. Helmet on and done up correctly. Safety belt on and done up correctly. Driver s side window to be closed, unless fitted with an approved net. The pit marshal will direct you to the long or short course starting line at which point a starting marshal will bring you into position at the starting lights After crossing the finish line when completing your run the person on the short track loop must stop and give way to avoid colliding with the vehicle on your right. When the way is clear proceed at walking pace back to your pit position. If your vehicle breaks down and your racing is finished for the day as soon as possible you are required to take your number to the pit marshal and notify him/her of your withdrawal. If your vehicle breaks down and you wish to drive another competitors vehicle, you must notify the Clerk of the Course. The vehicle must be of the same performance category as your own and not already have three drivers participating in that vehicle.

It must have been the right advice Mark was giving as Jason ended up second in the Junior Division. Well done Jason. Now Mark, if you just stop trying to have the hottest car at the track you too could be on the podium! I heard a whisper that Mark had to test out his fire extinguisher on the Mazda RX7.While revving the engine up during tuning at home the clutch disintegrated at 8000 rpm resulting in a fire. What a mess. A very sad state of affairs!!!! Deb s Gallery - has a camera, will catch you, whatever you re up to! Garry Butler v s Seane Stone with Garry crossing the line first Garry s OTHER vehicle the water truck. Don t mess with Garry! Is this your car? Rocky (the rescue vehicle) had a makeover on the summer break and was back in action with some Round 1 rescues.
