Altos news no 168. April 2018

Introduction from the Captain - Mr Michael Collins It is now a week since my elevation to Captaincy. On Maundy Thursday 29 March, 2018 Fordy hung up his gaudy shirts and shorts and delivered a memorable and witty speech before turning around and uttering those unforgettable words OVER TO YOU. I was told that my speech was very good and I was only sorry that Wendy missed it, mainly because she wrote it. The fun was due to begin as we prepared for the CAPTAINS DRIVE IN. Along with my trusty Vice Big Al Bentley I limbered up and inspected the positions of all the flags, including the one on the tee, as well as those behind it. With a few encouraging words from Big Al IF YOU RE GOING TO DUFF IT, DUFF IT HARD away I went and the rest is history. 314 metres down the middle. Only Pat Murrish had the sense to realise my potential and her flag was nearest. effect was my first win in 24 years. In the words of the Director of Golf. I DIDN T SEE THAT ONE COMING. I will finish my first newsletter effort with thanks for all the support that I have received up to now and please may it continue. I intend to continue Fordy s method of trying to gauge how many people actually read the newsletter by having a monthly competition, but in my case and to negate Stuart Knox s music knowledge, my quiz will be about FILMS. I will give you a famous line and I will ask for the film title, the character and the actor. My first quiz is in keeping with the Easter theme. Truly this man was the son of God. Film; Actor; Character played in film. Good luck. The weekend saw the Past Captain s compete for their trophy, with Tim Russel emerging victorious. The lunch was enjoyable and it was wonderful to see so many past captains together on the same table. Easter Sunday saw the five man scramble played which was an enjoyable event followed by lunch and a very long prize presentation involving myself and Lady Captain Lisa. The list of prizes just highlighted the large number of golfing events hosted by the club. The APPA AGM was held on Tuesday 3rd April followed by a golf competition which was an individual stableford. The day progressed with a dinner and the biggest surprise of the first week of my Captaincy. Yes, I won the competition, which in MR. CHRIS HALES 1939 2018 It is with the deepest regret that I have to announce the passing of Chris Hales. He had been stalwart member of Pinheiros Altos in the early days of the Club I am sure you will join with me in sending condolences to his family. page 2

Director of Golf - Monthly Report It is hard to believe that we are already in April and that we have just had another Members AGM, No questions were raised which I hope means that members are more satisfied end not that they are losing interest. The month of March has been a very busy month leading to the Easter break and the AGM. I would like to congratulate David Ford the out-going Club Captain and Zoe Pirret the out-going Lady Captain on a very successful year. I would like to welcome Michael Collins & Lisa Burns as the in-coming Captains and wish them a very good year in office. Michael will surely bring some different perspective to the captaincy and I am still trying to find out how he knew about the conversation prior to his election that he commented on at the AGM. Lisa I am sure will make a great Lady Captain and follow on a very organized committee. take this opportunity to thank her for all the photos taken over the years at the various events to make the newsletter what it is. The Easter Scramble was well attended with 105 players & 115 for lunch and the winners were Duncan Evans, Rainer Grimm, Neil Bamber, Iain Landsburgh & Geoff Stott with a fantastic score of 11 under Par. Graham Lee was well rewarded as the most improved man of the year and Paula Burke as the most improved lady of the year. The Captain Michael Collins started on a high as he won his first competition ever as an individual by having 36 points in the APPA tournament played on 3rd April 2018. He did have most of his points on one hole by scoring 5 points. Congratulation Captain! That s now 2 boards with your name on when we thought the only way you could get your name on a board was by being Captain! Christophe presents Graham Lee with the Trophy for the Most Improved man of the year Christophe presents Paula Burke with the Trophy for the Most Improved lady of the year I am very happy to confirm that Stewart Harper will continue on the greens committee as his input has been so important over the last few years. Duncan Evans & David have also agreed to carry on for another year on the greens committee and I am confident that they will be of important input. A big thank you to Knut Pedersen & Mai Markey who are leaving the Golf Committee this year. Their input and knowledge have been very welcome in the various committees. I am sure I can continue to count on them for their advices in the future. The spring medal was won by Tim Russell while on the same day won the Past captain s Challenge which was followed by a very enjoyable lunch with another 14 past Captains. Earlier in March the Mens Pairs Matchplay was played over 3 days as one of the day was rained off and therefore the final was not played during that week-end. Against all the odds 2 men s pairs qualified for the Final. David Markey & Viv Lewis will be playing Nigel Collins & Andy Georges. The final will be played on 8th May 2018. March was a very busy month with the AGM which was very well attended with over 80 members. I would like to thank Shirley Griffiths for taking the minutes of the Golf AGM as she has done over the past years and also The March Stableford was won by Lorraine Dunabin. Please make sure you put in your diaries the Captain s Day on 2nd June and the upcoming gala week from 22nd until 28th July 2018. I wish you all great Golfing! page 9

Firstly we had the Madrinha Trophy which was presented by Helen Mills. This is a greensomes competition with low/high handicap pairings. Congratulations go to Helen Mills and Lisa Burns for winning the trophy and Sue Georges and Wendy Evans as runners up. I have introduced a Winner s Trophy which is played annually as a bogey competition. Anyone who has won a medal, stableford or trophy competition during a captaincy year, in both divisions, qualifies to enter. This competition will be played the Wednesday before the Ladies AGM to try and ensure as many ladies as possible who qualify can take part. There were mixed reviews as this is not an easy format, but it is a Winner s competition page 20

after all I never promised to make it easy! Congratulations to Wendy Evans as winner and Lisa Burns as runner up. Sadly I was unable to present the last two trophies or attend the AGM due to a medical emergency of a detached retina. I would like to thank everyone for all their support during my year and the kind good wishes for my recovery. My thanks go to David Ford for his support as Club Captain and congratulations on his year. My thanks go to Christophe, Cristina and all the staff and to the Ladies Committee, whose hard work ensures the competitions run as smoothly as possible. The Wainwright, a trophy presented by Molly Wainwright, is a keenly fought singles matchplay over many months. Congratulations to Sue Georges for winning the Trophy, with Paula Burke as runner up. Congratulations also go to the Plate winner Amanda Stretton and Hilary Jessup as runner up. To the incoming Captains, Michael Collins and Lisa Burns, I wish you a great year. I will now hand over to Lisa who is going to be an excellent Ladies Captain - you are in good hands Ladies! Well what an introduction to being Lady Captain It s been a bit of a whirlwind since Zoe s incapacity but I am delighted that she is well on the road to recovery now and hopes to be back playing golf very soon! Thanks to everyone who has supported me, especially to our Past Lady Captain Mai Markey who stood in to run the Ladies AGM and deliver Zoe s speech. So Mai got presented with Zoe s Elf to ensure that Zoe is not an Elfless Past Lady Captain! Congratulations to Pat Murrish for guessing were my drive would land and to Mai, Chris, Debs and Ken for the canapes before hand a quick nibble and a swift glass of sparkles definitely assisted my drive! page 21

Lunch was lovely thank you Renato and thanks to the ladies for their contribution to the charity. The money is going to the Salvation Army to support their out of school day centres. Everyone seemed to enjoy the fun 9 hole competition and congratulations to the winners fantastic scores Ladies! The week continued with the Cloggies and Friends v The Ladies competition on Wednesday 28th March. It was an absolutely fabulous day and a huge thank you to Knut Pedersen for introducing this along with Mai. The camaraderie both on and off the course was brilliant; there were some very tight matches but I was pleased to be able to report to Zoe that the Ladies won 10 /6! Secretly Knut loves receiving that Clog! And to top the day Alan Bentley judges the Ladies Easter Bonnet competition and presented lovely prizes to the three winners: 1st Barbara Fletcher 2nd Melody Cotterill 3rd Helen Mills Well done ladies! March ended with our new Captain s Drive In which we all enjoyed, especially his fantastic drive and fun competition. We all wish him well for a great year. Happy golfing everyone! Report from the Greens Committee The full committee met on Monday the 2nd April. This included both Marco and Anna from the course managers and Christophe the Director of golf. These are the main points which were discussed and the decisions which were agreed:- 1. The greens continue to please members and visitors alike. They remain disease free and are firm leaving few pitch marks and good speed. The STRI programme will be continued and greens will be rolled to improve speed when felt necessary. 2. The tees are improving but are not yet at the level we seek. Wet weather and cool nights has held back improvement. We should see more growth particularly in the next few weeks and in particular where there has been pruning of the trees which have caused shadows over tees. 3. Bunkers continue to frustrate. The application of new sand whilst desirable to some extent and necessary has lead members to complain of excessive sand. Marco has accepted we need to do more to compact the sand and Duncan who has worked with other clubs nearby has agreed to assist in this programme. The reduced in size bunker on corks 2 has had too much sand leading to a decision supported by the Director that the bunker be GUR until we consider it to be fair At present ball are plugging and taking a stance is almost impossible due to excessive very soft sand. We are taking the long bunker on 7 of Olives out of play as a hazard and it will be designated as an area where clubs can be grounded without penalty albeit on sand. The surfaces are very firm! 4. The further pruning and removal of trees is now planned for the Autumn and we have plans to prune and remove some trees which lie between green side bunkers and greens which are considered unfair. Thick tree canopy is to be cleaned to ensure balls are released. The trees on the left of 8 of Pines are very notorious. Trees will be moved (after consultation with members) which STRI and we believe are now unfair. Those under consideration are some of the trees on the narrow area of the fairway on 7 of Corks and the trees between the pot bunkers on 4 of Pines and the green. There will be others? Members may wish to suggest some? 5. The fairways are due to be sanded in June and is advised by STRI to accelerate the improvement we seek in both growth and condition of the fairways the Kikuya grasses will be encouraged to spread where the Bermuda grasses have already been invaded. We should be able to enjoy fairways where the need for placing is only necessary after extreme weather or in the months of low light in winter. The owners are backing substantial expenditure which will benefit all members and encourage new members and visitors to PA whilst also increasing our investment in our club. Lastly the official drought is over. Indeed the rain will not stop! Good for the course as long as temperatures improve with longer days. Good golfing. Member s views are as always of interest. Stewart Harper chairman, David Ford, Duncan Evans. page 29

Social Golf - by Stella Jeffrey After the wettest, windiest St Patrick s Day seen in the Algarve by some miracle Sunday 18th March was a dry, windy, sunny day for the Social Golf Competition. The course was a bit damp, particularly on Olives but otherwise conditions were good. It was organized by Nils Lefler, Knut Pederson and myself, although the boys did most of the work. We were blessed as there were no cancellations with 40 players, and 5 extra for supper. The format this month was the yellow ball, a competition which is a lot of fun but not loved by all, as it causes some to act like they have a yellow fever and suffer with a racing pulse an involuntary movements when in possession of a yellow ball but all survived (its actually good for you) and everybody makes full recovery once back in the clubhouse... Teams of 4. Players take it in turn to play the yellow ball in rotation. Yellow ball plus 2 best scores to count on each hole, the yellow ball score counts a double stableford points. There were some very good scores and others not so good... Supper was roast chicken or salmon followed by apple tart and ice cream. Next Social Golf is on 22 April and will be Traffic Lights organized by Paula Burke Hickey and Sue Georges, look out for sign up sheet. Score Pines / Corks: 1st Knut Ellingsen, Nils Leffler, Adrienne Buth, Diana Collins 139 points 2nd Ron Goossens, Malcolm Hollier, Lisa Burns 127 points 3rd Per Anton Kleppa, Paul Cotterill, Ineke Goossens, Meg Black 121 points Corks / Olives: 1st Tony Hickey, Nigel Collins, Ingrid Hollier, Stella Jeffrey 138 points 2nd Helen Mills, Vera Watkins, Paul Black, Udo Berg 137 points 3rd Bertil Wiren, Dirk Blaesing, Peter Mills, Brigitte Sohier 111 points page 30
