What Is Eppie s Great Race? Eppie s Great Race is a Triathlon consisting of legs: a 5.8 mile RUN, 1.5 mile BIKE, and a 6.10 mile PADDLE. Extreme athletes to the recreational athlete, this race embraces all types of athletes, of all ages. Participants come from all over the Globe, Japan, Canada, Greece, as well as, other States and California Counties to experience this epic event. Who Is Eppie & Who Benefits From Eppie s Great Race? Eppie s Great Race (EGR), was founded in 197, by a well known California businessman and philanthropist Eppie G. Johnson. Since then, Eppie s Great Race has been held each year as a fundraising event along the picturesque American River Parkway, located in Sacramento/Rancho Cordova, California. In 1980, the designated race beneficiary became the Therapeutic Recreation Services (TRS), a Sacramento County program for individuals with disabilities and special needs. TRS is a program that focuses on abilities, rather than disabilities and encourage people to attain their highest level of independent leisure functioning by improving social and communicative skills, increasing independent living skills and the awareness of the importance of being involved in community recreational activities. Since 1980, Eppie s Great Race has donated over $1 million dollars to TRS. From 197 to date, Eppie s Great Race has donated overall, $1.1 million, between TRS and past charity recipient the Aquarian Effort. As Eppie s Great Race enters its rd year, we always remember the founder of these epic events. Eppie G. Johnson (pictured in blue shirt, white cap) passed away September 16, 01, at the age of 85. Of all Eppie s great accomplishments, his ultimate legacy will forever be the Eppie s Great Race, The World s Oldest Triathlon.
.5 -.0 Mile Run 1.0-5.5 Mile Bike In 01, the Eppie s Kids Duathlon was separated from the Eppie s Great Race. It is now held every year on the third Sunday in October, at Discovery Park in Sacramento, CA. Children are provided with their own event, on their own day. The race now features three, age appropriate courses: -6, 7-10, and 11-1. In 006 a new venue named the Eppie s Kids Duathlon was added and held in conjunction of the Eppie s Great Race. The primary focus of Eppie s Kids Duathlon was to show our youngsters that healthy outdoor activities are fun, exciting and rewarding, with the end goal to help them improve their fitness. The race featured a -mile run and a 6.5-mile bike course that encompassed ages to 17. In 015 a fourth division was added named the Epic Challenge a division for children with physical disabilities. Also in 015 came a new beneficiary, Shriners Hospitals for Children TM Northern California. We hope our duathletes will continue their involvement in running and cycling and someday compete as triathletes or in a relay team in the Eppie s Great Race, The World s Oldest Triathlon.
