Chineham Tigers Football Club Newsletter Number 2, March 2018 1
Futsal - Learning to Play the Brazilian Way Players from our U10s and U8s had a great time playing 10 matches in an action packed 2 hours at their first futsal tournament in Farnborough. After several weeks practice indoors at Everest the boys really rose to the occasion. Futsal is a five-a-side game normally played indoors, the main difference being that the ball has a reduced bounce which is ideal for developing close control and many other core skills. Tigers coach Paul Rolfe is delighted with the results, saying I wanted to introduce futsal to my players and I can already see that it has accelerated their skills development. Many of the South American greats of the game agree that it has had a significant impact on their own success and that of their national team. 2 Ronaldinho (FIFA World Footballer of the Year 2004 and 2005) states Futsal is an extremely important way for kids to develop their skills and understanding of the game. My touch and my dribbling have come from playing Futsal.
Tigers Coaches Move to the Next Level The single thing that has the biggest impact on the players experience is the quality of the coaching that we deliver. On that basis we have an aspiration to have at least one FA level 2 qualified coach per age group or team to ensure that every player can benefit from the learning that the FA provides. The Level 2 course is split into 3 separate blocks, each of which are 3 or 4 days of intensive learning and practice, usually carried out over a 6 month period. It also includes some rigorous assessment where the FA tutor visits the trainee and observes them coaching their own players to test that they have met the required standard. The great news is that we have 2 new qualified L2 coaches, Dave Denham and Dale Turpin, which has doubled the number within the club. The even better news is that we have another 2 coaches booked to start the course in April and another coach part way through the EUFA B (level 3) course. This is just the start of a continual process of further development of the coaches within the club. With the revamping of the FA courses over the last few years and the creation of a standard coaching methodology based around what is called the England DNA, the FA are now reaping the rewards as can be seen from the domination of the English national teams from U17 to U20. England U17s lift the World Cup in October 2017 after an impressive 5-2 win over Spain in the final in India. 3 Dale Turpin, after recently qualifying as a level 2 coach said "the FA are really onto something with the coaching methods they are honing with students on this course and it has significantly affected the way we coach our players. We now design sessions that provide as many opportunities for player decision making as possible. We step back, observing, and allow the players to make those decisions without interference and only step in when needed to adjust the session slightly, provide brief feedback or test their understanding. The players are really enjoying the sessions and have developed greatly as individuals and as a team."
Tigers Girls Turn Into Wildcats We launched the CT Girls section in September last year and now have a total of 45 players from Year R up to Year 9 regularly attending training sessions. To drive mass participation of girls in football the FA have re-launched their SSE Wildcats Girls Football Centres for 2018 and have chosen Chineham Tigers to be one of the limited number of centres across Hampshire. The FA are providing resources and funding to enable us to grow participation in Basingstoke and surrounding areas and I recently attended a Wildcats training day at St. George s Park to learn more about how to coach effectively with girls who are new to organised football. The focus is very much around making the sessions as much fun as possible and in providing a welcoming and safe environment. After some initial planning we hope to open our centre in early April! Tigers girls brave the freezing conditions as snow starts to fall on Saturday 17 th March at what was the start of a weekend of snow and ice. They loved it! 4
The FA have also announced girls football week from the 23 rd to 29 th April and so we will be taking the opportunity to go into a number of local schools to run some sessions to stimulate additional interest in participation in our SSE Wildcats Centre. If your school (junior or infants) would be interested then please let me know.
