Dear readers, In the last Issue of the Rasala # 93 we printed this prominent gentleman photos but we took away the information that was hand written on the left hand side of the photos in Gurmukhi and asked the readers to have look at the photos and see if you can recognised and we also said if you don t know then ask your father or grandfather perhaps they will know whose photo it is, no one did reply as this gentleman passed away to his heavenly abode before the partition of India some 70 years ago. So what is written on the Photo in Punjabi we will tell you in English, it Sri Man Sardar Jeeva Singh Ji Bhakar President Lahore Gwalmandi wale. I would say that this photo was taken numbers of years before the partition. Below we are fortunate to find some one who not only knows about the great man but he is the great grandfather and he has managed to get together information and he has written a page full of information about his Great Grandfather, his name his S. Lakhwinder Singh Bhakar. life of Bazurgh, Pardhan, Bapu, Sardar Jeeva Singh Ji Bhakar Birth and Ancestral Geography My great grandfather (hereafter Bapu Jee) was born in Lahore on the 15 th of January 1850 to my great-great grandparents Bapu Ji Dhan Pat Rai Ji and Maa Jee Dhan Wanti Jee. Bapu Jee was one of three siblings, an older sister named Ma Bhag Kaur Jee and a younger sister Ma Jeeva Kaur Jee. Bapu Jee was born in the family residence named Haveli Diwan Rai which was located adjacent to the British cantonment area of Lahore (later to become Model Town). Whilst Bapu Jee was born in Lahore the family maintained residences in Kapurthala, Lahore (what was to become Krishen Nagar, Nisbet Road and later Gawalmandi) and Delhi. My fore-fathers had been treasury keepers to the rajah s of Kapurthala both before and during British India Raj (and similarly so at the Darbar of Maharaja Ranjit Singh). The family was used to spending the mild summer months in Kapurthala and the winter period in Lahore this pattern of residence was primarily due to my great-great grandfather s commitments at the Kapurthala Darbar. As a result, Bapu Jee spent time as a youth living in both Kapurthala and Lahore (settling in Lahore permanently around 1865) with frequent travel to Delhi, Agra Amritsar and Hazoor Sahib in Maharashtra (the latter two for pilgrimage purposes). Early Youth and Education Bapu Jee received his Gurumukhi education at the historical Gurdwara Ber Sahib in Kapurthala and was also tutored in Urdu and spent some time at the Masonic College (in Lahore) learning to read and write English. Bapu Jee was fully proficient in both the Gurumukhi and Urdu scripts. Dr Beant Singh (Lahore) and Sardar Teja Singh (Court Judge in Daska) were life-long friends of my Bapu Jee as was Gul Hummahad (a Judge based in the Daska Court). This is page 4 rest on page 5

Continued from page 4 Marriages 1868 and 1893 Bapu Jee first married in the winter of 1868 to our respected great grandmother Maa Jee Ma Bhagwanti Kaur Bhakar Jee (Maa Jee). Unfortunately following a short illness our dear great-grandmother s soul departed at the young age of 40 and Bapu Jee remarried as was the custom at the time though it was not until several years after the passing away of our elder Maa Jee. Bapu Jee s second marriage to our dear great grandmother Maa Malaa Daie Jee Bhakar in 1893. First Dharam Parchar Committee Bapu Jee was a true visionary and one of his key objectives was to unite our fractured community in Lahore, this was achieved through Bapu Jee s efforts with the creation of the first Dharam Parchar Committee in Badewala which Bapu Jee lead for circa 45 years. Bapu Jee was honoured for his leadership, care and attention to our community which bestowed Bapu Jee with several honorific titles including (Dhan Wala, Wadi Bhag Wala and Panja Pinda Da Malak). Bapu Jee respected everyone the same from a young child to his peer group. Bapu Jees achievements for our community are too numerous to list, Bapu Jee s greatest wish was for our community was for it to remain united and with a singular vision of progress. Bapu Jee lived to the ripe age of 96 departing for the heavenly abode in May 1946. My grandfather Respected Sardar Seth Bajitar Singh Jee Bhakar was the 7 th child of my great grandparents and I am proposing to write a separate article about my grandfather in another issue of the Rasala in 2017 (which I will be happy to sponsor) Lakhwinder Singh Bhakar. Can I thank S. Lakhwinder Singh Bhakar for giving us this wonderful chance for letting us read the life of a great Man Bapu, Sardar Jeeva Singh Ji Bhakar. I feel very privileged to have read about our Bapu Ji and as our Lakhwinder Singh Ji say s he will be preparing another article on the life of Bazurgh Seth, Sardar Bachitar Singh Ji Bhakar, You know readers having lived in London for about 5 years I often use to meet him in numbers of different situations but lots of the time in Artillery passage shopping place, and when ever I use to see him he always had a smile on his face and use to greet every one who use to be there. Here I was chasing for the photo of S. Jeeva Singh Ji in our the Rasala, ever since I was writing my book call The Sikhs in wales, as I wanted place his photo in there as well for people to see at least who he was, but no one did help out till I heard from Lakhwinder Singh Ji and now I even have his life storey which I would like to include in my second edition of the book with Lakhwinder Singh permission. Even just last week having met a brother from Loha family in Doncaster bow lane Gurdwara other day who promised to send me some copies of old photos and I am hoping that he will so that we can published them for the benefit of lots of other younger generation to see as to who was who. In the last Rasala I did inform my readers that I am not sending and Rasala to any of our Gurdwaras as no one replies and I don t know if it is reaching the Gurdwara it self or is some one else walks away with it, I now have email address of few of the Gurdwaras and I did try to send our issue 93 to them but still I have had no response if they have received it. So please if you are reading this Rasala barrowed from some one else why not send us an email of yours and we can send one to your email at no cast to you. A big Thanks to out brother Yash Tara Ji We also wish to say a very big thank you to our brother Yash Tara Ji of Lamington Spa for placing his company advert of Tara & co Insurance brokers in this issue of our for which we are very thanks full to him and say it was very kind of you to do that and we will be most grateful to you if you can remember to place your advert at least twice in a year, if you say we can remind you of that. As we hope that we can carry on going with the kind help of Dhani brothers and sisters who have supported us all along in our

Let us hope that our readers did receive the last issue of our Rasala one way or another. If you did not then please do let us know and send us an email. The last Rasala was sponsored by our family in Wolverhampton, this Rasala in your hand has been sponsored by our brother Lakhwinder Singh Ji Bhakar for which we are grateful to him he has yet promised another issue next year as well. The next Rasala # 95 will now be coming out next year. in the month of Jan/Feb and will is issued on the last week of February 2017. so if any one wish to sponsere that in celebrating some happy event or in remembrance to some one dear then please do let us know by return so that we could book it under their name. We also wish to thank our brother Mr Yash Tara Ji of Lamington Spa for placing his advert in this issue which is placed at the back page and we are hoping that he will do that very soon again. Our brother S. Varinder Singh Ji Bhogal Ji have very kindly donated 10 towards the Running of our Rasala for which we would like to thank him for the Donations can I tell our readers of Cardiff that this is the same Mr Bhogal who gave us lots and lots of help when we were constructing our Gurdwara in Tudor St Cardiff, in the architect and engineering so I would like to wish him lots of good health and happiness in the coming future. Our Gurdwara in Tudor St is celebrating Guru Nanak Dev Ji birthday with an akhandpath on 18, 19, and samapti on Sunday the 20th November, what day did your Gurdwara celebrated this Gurpurab. We are very sorry to report this tragedy that our young brother S. S. Guljar Singh Gola was a very good man who served as the chairman of the Preston Bow lane Gurdwara for numbers of years as well. In Cardiff we have established an Antim Sanskar committee to deal with the remains after the Cremation. Look for another article on this issue. This month once again we will be going to this Bhat community matrimonial fare again and will report next time. Can we ask all of our readers that have you got a permanent visa to go to India yet? What it is that Indian Government use to issue 6 monthly visa first, then they started to give five years visa and in 2013 /and 14 they decided to give 15 years visas and they called that PIO visa card for which one had to pay over 200 pounds. Now the Indian government has decided to scrap that PIO visa and are asking people who got PIO card to change it before the end of December this year and you will not have to pay any more money and most likely you will be given an I CO visa which will be for your life that way one can go when they like, so please look in to it. Another thing that Indian government has done is canceled all old 1000 and 500 rupees note if you have got any of those then you can change them in India till the end of December and in their place they have issued a 2000 and a now 500 rupees note. What are people like us going to do who use to bring three or 4 thousand woth of 1000 and 500 note with them here? In Cardiff we have also established a Sikh Council of Wales by getting together 4 of our Gurdwaras together. We have one Gurdwara in Swansea, and three in Cardiff one in Tudor Street, one in Copper Street and the third one in Pearl Street and we have already done a function together in our National assembly and have celebrated the First Parkash day of our Guru Granth Sahib Ji. And are now looking to celebrate Vaisakhi together. All of our community will be seeing the photos of Sardar Jeeva Singh Ji Bhakar and now we know what he looked like even we have his mine life storey, so if any one else is holding on to some real good photo then please share it with us so that we can share it with all the Bradri send them by email. Can I humbly request all of our readers to please send us your Gurdwara email. So that we can at least send them a copy of the Rasala by email. To day we had an what's up where Manchester Monton street Gurdwara is also now organising a bhat Sangat Rishta Seva they are requesting divorced from 12 to 4 pm and single from 4 to 8 pm on Saturday 3rd December and they say come with your parents not on your own if you do come on your own you will not be admitted. With all our heart. Very great fully Guru Sangat Charan Dhoor Jaswant Singh Jas. Chief Editor. (10)

Punjabi open university Well here we are, two whole months down the line we do very much hope that you have mastered the 1st lot of 10 letters that we asked you to learn and that was 1 letter in 6 days and those 10 letters were:- a A e s h k K g G and new ones are c C j J \ t T f F x and keep this key to the sound and pronunciation safe. this is the key to the sounds & pronunciation All this was written by Gurdave Kaur M.A. B. Ed. Sangeet Parveen. Sangeet Bhaaskar. Sangeet vishaard. Sangeet parbhaakar. To whom we would like to thank and say it was a very difficult task to have worked all this out. We are sure our second and third generation individuals will find their way through all this and will be able to learn Gurmukhi if they really put their mind to it. So can we say that we are grateful to you. Gurdave Kaur we're sure you will not mind as we are only trying to ask younger people to learn Gurmukhi. au u as in put, a with an u Its called onkar auu oo, as in food & u I, as in fruit, U this oora is with dulencre E o a, o A u, a, e Aw a, aa AY oa as in goal & o, as in go or more u, as in but & up, a, as in arrival a as in father &aa, as in baa, This got knna. a i,a a i, as in said & a, as in sad This got dullanva AO au as in exhaust this one has an kanora AM n n, as in ink this one has tipi AW a n aan, an, as in can t This one has Kanna with bindi ie I, I, as in sit this one has a siaari ei ee, ey,y ee, as in seed, ey, as in honey & y,as in holy this has a bihari ey ay, a-e ay, as in say & a-e as in face this has a lann s s,c s, as in sweet & c in race S sh, as in Shine h h h, as in horn k k,c k, as in kettle & c, as in cat K k h k h, as in khaki g G g, as in goat g h g h, as in ghost ng n g as in bangles c ch ch, as in child C chh ch, as in chhattarpur j j j, as in jam z z j, as in zebra J jh jh, as in Jhansi \ n j, as in injury t T f t, as in heat th, th, as in thug f d, as in dig F F dh, as in Dhaka x n n, as in Runn of Kutch q t t, as in Tamil Q t h t h, as in thousand d d d, as in they D dh dh,as in Dharama n n n, as in noon p P P b B m p p, as in pool ph ph, as in phantom ph ph, as in flower b b, as in baby bh bh, as in Bhopal m m, as in mother X y y, as in yellow r r r, as in red l l l, as in love v v,w v, as in van& w, as in will V r r, as in Roorkee A line is placed under a letter to give a softer sound as q t and d d or an open sound as T, th,f, dh, n n, and V r. A line on top of n means that it sound like an n as in ink. A line under u is placed only when it sounds like U in put and there is no line when it sound like u in but. To give a hard sound to a word, double letter have been used as double tt is used in kitten. Writing Punjabi sounds in English is tremendously difficult task as there are only 26 letters in English alphabet as against 35 in Punjabi. Besides V&W,C&S or C&K and Y&I have similar sounds. So the use of 26 English letters is reduced to 23. Moreover 5 vowels in English a, e, I, o, u, are included in the alphabet where as in Punjabi the 11 diacritical marks (lga matran) are in addition to the 35. there are extra 5 sounds of S sh K kh g gh z z and P f; thus making a total of 51. there being a ratio of less than 1to 2 between English and Punjabi, no system can perfectly reproduce the exact sound of Punjabi in English but I have tried to prepare this key keeping in view the phonics of the language. This key has been tested on Asian, afro Caribbean, European and English. It nowhere near the traditional way of writing Punjabi in roman script. An English reader would read bat byt jap jyp but bt jup jp no way he or she is going to read bat as but or jap as jup ; the way Punjabi is being transliterated at present. I sincerely hope that this key will make reading Punjabi in roman script a little better as well as easier. Any suggestions for further improvement would be most welcomed. Can we really thank her for us to use her. We would like to ask our reader who are learning Gurmukhi with us to let us know if its going well or are theresome hiccups. Send us an email. Jaswant. I HAVE ALREADY SAID SOMETHING IN OUR EDITORIAL ABOUT THAT WE IN CARDIFF ARE trying to get a permanent place, so that we can go to a place after the crematorium and scattered the remains of our loved ones in a sweet running water. However I myself was perusing this place since 1992 and the local council did granted us a place and the community did make a use of it two or three times, but now the council have withdrawn that site and all the Hindus and the Sikhs are now working with the Council, who are suggesting another site. I am asking all of our towns and city people in all of UK to let us know if anyone have set up a permanent place any where they can take the remains of their loved ones and put them somewhere without and scaremongering, to put them in the sweet water and quickly leave so that no one can see us or report us to the local authority. Do you know we have now been in Britain for the last 70 years and we have not negotiated with our authority, so that we can do this ritual peaceful with out any DHAR, and yet we all have been doing this for years, the authority knows that we are doing what we are doing but they have not said anything to us, because they know that the remains we go to put in the river are not contaminated. We have been told that the Hindus of the midlands have found a place in one of the Rivers and have put some Ganga water into it so it can purify it and are still using that place to scatter the remans in that river. I know that sometime we have to go for miles before we find some place which is not busy with people and have done it for many, many years. One problem that I am coming to face is the place the council is offering is not a very fast running water and all the Hindus, and Sikhs from other community say that they always grind the remain and make a powder and then sprinkle it in the river and I am trying to tell them that our community do not grind the remains but have them crushed and I know I have seen bigger then 9 inches pieces of bones which are then washed in Milk in a bowl and then the whole thing is the respectfully put it in to the river. The Hindus and the other Sikhs, are saying why do you just have them crushed? and I have told them I did it with my parents and when ever I have gone to accompany any family they have always had the remains Page 13 crushed and not ground to powder. What I want to ask all of my Bhat Sikh Community as to why do we not grind the remains and why we always crush them, and then they are put in to a wooden box now, before it was a card board box, I know I took my father s remains to India and took it to a Place called Kiritpur, the holiest place for the Sikh to do that. I am also telling this group, that we might not use that site, because the children are saying these days that, we went to such and such place to put the Father s remains, we want to now go to take our mother remans there as well. The council is saying there is a site behind Sophia Gardens for which they have allocated 15000, but the site costs keep on going up and up and now they are saying that it will now cost some where around 35,000 and the council is saying that they will foot the 15000 and the rest the communities will have to pay, now this Antim Sanskar group is going ahead to open an account in the bank and then go to their respective community and ask them to pay towards it. My argument is that the site behind Sophia gardens does not have very good water flow and the bones will not be able to shift with that water flow, but the flow is fine to sprinkle powder in the water there. This is all come about since the council is running short of funds and it is all being cut back. We have even tried to involve the Indian Consulate and he has gone to negotiate with them but has not come back to us with anything positive. I am going to try and get some of the older generation gentlemens and show them so that they can also give their opinion. We have tried to talk with the council saying why don t they charge extra at the crematorium and build that place for us. But the problem is how are we going to raise 20,000 + so that we can get this place built, is it going to be voluntary donation or are we saying so much per community, then all the Asian communities are not all same size. Should we go by families or individuals, it is a very sticky problem, so I thought that I will highlight the problem so that the other towns and cities can also tell us what they are doing and how they get along whenever they do have a situation at a of Antim Sanskar, please my plea is can people let us know why we do not grind the remains of our loved one, I will be very eagerly waiting for an response from you all. Winter has arrived make sure you don t suffer from cold feet and hands, I know I do!! The cause of cold feet and hands is because you may have poor circulation in your body. was Try and eat yourself warm, In the colder months, forget salad and switch to soups, curries to keep you warm. Add warming spices, such as ginger, chilli, garlic and gharam masala and mustard seeds to your cooking to help your circulation. which will warm you up and boost your mood and immunity Cold weather can play havoc with your circulation, causing your blood vessels to narrow and making it harder for warming blood to reach your extremities. But chilly hands and freezing feet shouldn t keep you indoor all winter, there s lot you can do to help improve things Wrap up warm, I don t have to tell you that wearing warm clothing could stop your hands and feet getting cold and your circulation getting sluggish. But don t be tempted to wear restrictive layers. Tight socks and waistband could restrict your circulation Bhat Sikh community matrimonial seva in Birmingham Try and massage away cold. There are more than 2000 nerves ending in each foot, so if you want to stimulate your circulation then massaging your feet can really help, Rosemary essential oil helps to boost circulation, so add a few drops to a plain lotion and use it to massage you feet. Place one of your hand on top of your foot and the other on your sole. Rub your hand back and forth across your foot in short, brisk strokes (this is especially helpful for cold feet) try and consternate on the entire foot, from toe to heel, finally squeeze each toe individually and then gently stretch it before going on to the next foot. A big thanks to YOURS, Magazine. MAKE A JOINT RUB FOR YOURSELF AND EASE YOUR JOINTS AND MUSCLES A DEEPLY WARMING AND HEALING BALM. In a base of 50g (2oz) coconut oil, mix 4 of drops spike lavender and two drops of each marjoram, ajwain and German chamomile essential oils The German chamomile has potential muscle repairing properties, marjoram and spike lavender reduces painful lactic acid in your muscles and joints while ajwain relieves pain and warms muscles Rub in as needed. amazing that at least 200 people turned up on the 20th November and the people in charge layed more tables and chair and made 4 long lines, one for single boys and one line for single girls, this time there were more single girls then last time and there was an increase in the single boys as well. There were about 20 boys, of divorced background but there were about 8 girls in the same position. Last time they were writing everyone particulars in a register book and were giving the yellow badge to the divorced and white to the single ones but this time if you were divorced or single they gave you yellow or white label and told them to go in and sit in the appropriate line and that was it, if you try and suggest something to the people in charge they did not want to listen. Last time I suggested that they should get a good microphone and amplifier, they did not bother and still brought a very small one which no one could hear properly. I felt it was too much for the organiser although they did have more volunteers as by 1.30 the place was packed with people, by 3.30 we were told that 4 or 5 people have met up and have gone outside into different rooms to talk. Let us hope that people did get matched up but the service was very, very disorganised, lots of the people were left to fend for themselves, we know it is a free Seva but with a little bit of more resources things would have worked very well but no one wanted to listen to any idea. They were saying, the next gathering will be in February, so I am sorry the service was too loose. We have been informed that another free Seva, matrimonial gathering is happening in the Gurdwara in Monton Street, Manchester Moss side on, 3rd December 12 to 4pm for the divorced and from 4 to 8 pm for the singles, It also said in the notices of Manchester to come with your parents and that you will not be allowed in if you come on your own. I would like to go to that gathering and see what and how free Seva that will be carried out in Manchester, we will see what the weather is like but let me wish lots and lots of success to both of these gathering and hope that our Sangat will benefit from these two places, it is a very good effort but please try and make it more organised and let us hope that more of these gathering's will held.
