CANSKATE CORNER Welcome back to one and all! We hope you all enjoyed a restful and happy holiday break. We are now well into the second half of the CanSkate season. Assessment #3 is coming up. The skaters are doing very well learning new skills, strengthening existing skills and going by the smiling faces having lots of fun. We have received lots of feedback from the Family Skates in December. They were enjoyed by all. There will be one more set of Family Skates during the week of March 14 19. This is the second last week of the season. For the last week of CanSkate, the skaters will take part in a Beach Day where beach themed music and games will abound! We have plenty of fun times ahead. See you at the rink! PA of the Month for December The CanSkate coaches would like to thank all of our great Program Assistants (PAs). Our Program Assistants are an integral part of our program delivery. We would like to recognize the following PA for her commitment, dedication and enthusiasm. The PA of the Month for December is awarded to: Sarah Maude Letourneau. Here are some equipment and safety reminders for parents. > Remain in the arena during your child s CanSkate class. Parents are asked to remain in the arena for the duration of the CanSkate class. This is a safety item. If your child is in need of a bathroom break or medical attention, we need to be able to reach you quickly and easily. > Get their skates sharpened. Skating is hard work. Having dull skate blades makes it even harder and a lot less enjoyable. Be sure to sharpen their skates if they have been skating on outdoor ice. Use a good skate sharpening company and get your skater s skates sharpened. > Keep their skates sharp. To keep their skates sharp, use protective guards for walking around. Dry the blades and sole plate completely after skating. Don t put wet guards back on the skates after the blades have been dried you can get cloth blade protectors. Don t let your skater walk on a concrete floor without protective guards. The concrete will take the edges off of the blades and re sharpening will be required. Imagine taking your favourite kitchen knife and running the blade edge over some rocks. Think of what will happen to that poor knife! The same thing happens to skate blades on concrete. Most of the floor in the lobby is concrete. The floor that is between the lobby benches and the changes rooms is rubber. This is a better surface to walk on without skate guards. If the bench in the lobby is crowded, use one of the dressing rooms. The floor in there is rubber as well. > Hydrate your child before class. Ensure your child has a drink before starting class. That way they will be less inclined to have to stop class and leave the ice for a drink.
