WELCOME FROM UCI Brian Cookson UCI PRESIDENT FROM CYCLING AUSTRALIA The Hon Steve Bracks AC CHAIR CYCLING AUSTRALIA It is my pleasure to extend a very warm welcome to everyone at the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. With more than 500km of mountain bike trails in North Queensland, Cairns is a very fitting venue for this leading event of the year for our cross-country Olympic and downhill specialists. Organisers of the UCI Mountain Bike World Cup presented by Shimano in 2014 and 2016, Cairns has already proven that it is more than capable of hosting the world s best, with courses that are appreciated by both the athletes and fans. I would like to acknowledge everyone behind the scenes of these UCI World Championships, in particular Cycling Australia under its Chairman, the Hon Steve Bracks AC and CEO Nick Green. This event also benefits from the valuable support of the local authorities, partners and sponsors as well as a great number of volunteers who give up their time to be part of this adventure. Thanks to you all. Australia has hosted our UCI World Championships for mountain bike on two previous occasions: in 2009 in Canberra and 1996 also in Cairns. That year, local Cairns athlete Tracey Hannah was only eight years. Twenty-one years on, she has been at the forefront of the downhill competitions in the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup. She has proven her great shape but the competition will be tough, and excitement is guaranteed. I wish the very best of luck to everyone competing in the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships. On behalf of Cycling Australia, I welcome everyone to the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in beautiful Cairns. This event promises a fantastic combination of iconic rainforest environment, explosive action from the world s best riders including some home grown heroes, who are currently at the top of their game and an unrivalled spectator experience. The 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships will feature over 300 riders from more than 35 countries competing in the Cross-country and Downhill disciplines. We know that the courses at Smithfield Conservation Park, home to this and previous World Cup events, always provide action aplenty and thrilling racing. Whether it s the tropical climate or the uniqueness of the Rain Forest trails, Cairns never disappoints. Tourism Events Queensland, Cairns Regional Council, Department of National Parks, Sport and Racing, James Cook University and Tourism Tropical North Queensland, our event delivery partner GTR Events and our commercial partners Let s Go Motorhomes, RockShox and World Trail. Without the passion, investment and commitment of these partners, this event would not happen. At a local level, we also recognise the contributions of Cairns Mountain Bike Club and its members for their dedication and commitment to the event. A very special thanks to all our volunteers and officials who are crucial to making this great event happen. Finally, to the athletes, I wish you safe and enjoyable competition in your quest to Conquer Cairns and trust you will enjoy the hospitality and unique beauty of this amazing part of the world. I must acknowledge all our partners for their significant commitment to this great event, FROM TEQ The Hon Kate Jones MP MINISTER FOR TOURISM AND MAJOR EVENTS Welcome to the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships Cairns as the world s best mountain bike riders tackle the offroad trails of Tropical North Queensland. Cairns and Queensland will be on show to the thousands in attendance and a global audience watching at home with over 300 riders from more than 35 countries competing in the Cross Country and Downhill disciplines. The Queensland Government recognises the value of events in driving visitation and generating economic outcomes for destinations throughout the State, and is proud to support this event through Tourism and Events Queensland as part of the It s Live! in Queensland events calendar. Congratulations to all those involved for staging a world-class event here in Queensland, and for those visiting I encourage you to make the most of the tourism experiences throughout Tropical North Queensland. 04 05

CONTACTS KEY COMMUNICATIONS & MEDIA CONTACTS UCI CONTACTS Mountain Bike to elect its UCI Athletes Commission representatives in Cairns As part of the revamp of all UCI Commissions in 2017, the Athletes Commission is electing its new members throughout the year during the World Championships of each discipline. The process started with Cyclo-cross in January, followed by Track Cycling and BMX. The next elections concern Mountain Bike and will take place at the 2017 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Cairns. After modernising the Athletes Commission in 2015, the UCI is increasing the representation of the its disciplines by giving a greater voice to athletes. Men/women parity - which had previously been reserved for the Olympic disciplines (Road, Track, BMX and Mountain Bike) and Para-cycling - are now extended to all 8 disciplines. Chaired by Bobbie Traksel (NED) since June 2015, the Athletes Commission will increase from 12 to 20 members in 2017 and will continue to have a President elected by his/her peers who will serve on the 14 UCI Management Committee, the executive body of the UCI operating under the authority of the Congress. Four Mountain Bike representatives (one male and one female for Cross-country Olympic and one male and one female for Downhill) will be elected by riders in Cairns. Only athletes taking part in the Elite World Championships will be able to vote.
