CELEBRATING 24 YEARS OF SINGLES GOLF IN AMERICA North Jersey Chapter - American Singles Golf Association February 2016 President s Message Dear Members, Another year is underway and the Northern NJ Chapter is off with a bang. We had over a dozen people at January s Single Mingle including one new member and two potential members. We are also hosting a booth at the upcoming METRO- POLOTIAN New Jersey GOLF EXPO being held at the Meadowlands Exposition Center February 19th 21st, Come, stop by the booth say hello, better yet - bring a friend! My goals for the Chapter for the year are: Increasing membership Maintaining the high level and number of quality golf outings (a thank you in advance to Joe and Geri and to each of you who organize an outing), and: Playing faster rounds Focusing on membership for the moment, we have the major event of the Golf Expo, but ongoing outreach efforts are equally, if not more important. We have a Facebook page: Singles Golf of Northern New Jersey. If you are on Facebook, like us, stop by, comment, share pictures you may have from an outing. We also have a Meetup site: North jersey Singles Golf (http:// www.meetup.com/north-jersey-singles -Golf/). We list each outing and event there. To show how active a group we really are, I d ask that you join Meetup and list when you are coming to an event. Showing how active we are is an excellent way to attract new members. You can also help by posting the Single? Golf? sheets with the tear off tabs at whatever Golf related facilities (golf courses, golf/sport stores, driving ranges et. al.) you frequent. You can print them off the Newsletter mailings; Bill will also distribute them at the next Dinner Meeting. If you are planning on attending the GOLF EXPO, the hours are Friday 1-7pm, Saturday 10 6PM, Sunday 10 to 5PM. For directions go to Meadowlands Exposition Center (http:// mecexpo.com/directions/). By the bye, we have an opening for Treasurer. If you have an audit, accounting or bookkeeping background (or are organized and good with numbers), we have an opening for Chapter Treasurer. Please see Joe Cifune or myself for details. Remember, studies have found the individuals who volunteer live longer. It s going to be getting warmer. Start walking, stretching, take some practice swings - loosen up. Let s have a great golf year. Looking forward to seeing you soon. In the meantime, be safe in life and golf hit them long and hit them true. ~Tom Connolly, President Social Dear Members, Hopefully those who were lucky enough to be in New Jersey for the blizzard of 2016 were safe and warm and those of you in the sunny south thought of us with envy!! Time to practice your indoor putting! Currently we have 55 members. Tell your friends we ll be at the golf show at the Meadowlands from February 19 th 21 st. Anyone who signs up with us at the show or within 30 days after the show will receive a coupon to offset some of the cost of an outing this season. So it s a great incentive for them to join us and get to know us. Here s a true golf story for you: When the Caddy Speaks David Feherty does a standup show that is quite spectacular. It's all about his life in golf, the drinking and lots of stories about life on the tour. Here's one of his stories. It was back in the 70s and a soon-to-be prominent golfer (Ray Floyd) was playing at Augusta for his first Masters. Back then the players could not bring their own caddies but had to use one of the locals. Floyd told the caddy master he wanted a big fellow who could handle his bag, but who also would keep quiet, no advice needed. The caddy who was assigned Floyd said, "Hello Mr.... Floyd said "Hello." And followed that with, "That's the last I want to hear from you." Everything went well until the 10th hole when Floyd pushed his drive into the right trees on the par 4. After surveying the scene he said out loud, "I'm going to hit a low fade out through that opening to carry and land mid green and then roll over the crest down near the hole." Surprisingly he pulled it off exactly and turned to his caddy and said, "How's that?" The caddy spoke for the first time and said, "That wasn't your ball." ~Bill Fanaras/Marjorie Whitman, Membership Co-Chairs Communications Members, I am providing below the instructions for signing on to our website and setting up your own password, for those who may not have done this yet. Our chapter currently has 55 members. Rules and More Rules Player shanks ball into his golf cart Larry and I were playing a friendly" game of golf. Larry shanked his drive on the 3rd hole which is set back of the golf cart parking area by about 30 yards. Larry s ball hits his golf cart, and rebounds into the fairway and lands almost 200 yards from the tee in the middle of the fairway. Larry of course says something glib like, you have to play the entire course and understand rebounds to play golf well." I of course said something like, "I think you may have to add a penalty stroke to your score." This is when the game became a bit less friendly. What is the correct penalty, if any? A. No penalty, ball plays as it lies. B. No penalty, however the stroke must be cancelled and the ball must be returned to the original point of play and be re-hit. C. One stroke penalty and the ball must be returned to the original point of play and be re-hit. D. One stroke penalty and the ball plays as it lies. E. Two stroke penalty and the ball should be plays as it lies. Answer And the answer is D, Larry incurs a one stroke penalty and the ball plays as it lies. This one may catch a few of you as the penalty for this type of incident was changed recently changed. Larry was in violation of USGA Rule 19-2. This is the rule that addresses Ball in Motion Deflected or Stopped by Player, Partner, Caddie or Equipment. Since the golf cart is considered part of his equipment, Larry incurs a penalty. As of this 2008, Larry would earn a penalty of one stroke in both match play and stroke play and would be required to play the ball as it lies. Previously, the penalty was two strokes in stroke play and loss of hole in match play.
