GOING THE DISTANCE: For the first time this season, Seattle U was pushed to five sets Sept. 16 at Eastern Washington, rallying from a 2-1 match deficit to defeat the Eagles, 15-11 in the fifth set. Two nights later, the Redhawks once again were pushed to the limit, this time by the Montana Grizzlies. Seattle U held a 2-1 match lead, but Montana won the fourth set before the Redhawks earned the victory with a 15-10 deciding set win. Before losing in five sets at Utah Valley Sept. 27, Seattle U had won seven five-set matches in a row, previously losing a five-set contest Oct. 5, 2012, to Idaho. James Finley is 4-1 in five-set matches as head coach of the Redhawks. As a head coach, Finley had won nine five-set matches in a row, last losing a five-set contest while at VCU in the CAA Tournament final against Delaware Nov. 20, 2011, before the five-set defeat at the hands of Utah Valley Sept. 27. RECORD BOOK WORTHY: In the Sept. 18 match at Montana, Martina Samadan earned 22 kills and two attack errors in 31 attack attempts for a.645 hitting percentage, the fifth-highest single-match hitting percentage by an individual in program history. Samadan is also tied for fifth for most block assists in a single match in school history with nine against Lafayette College Sept. 5 and against Pacific Sept. 4. She is also tied for fourth for most total blocks in a single match with 10 against Pacific. The team earned 17 team blocks against Pacific, tied for the third-most in a single match in program history. That total included 30 block assists, sixth-most in program history. SERVING BREAKFAST AND INSPIRATION: Before the Aug. 30 match against Texas, the volleyball team headed to Tim s Place in Albuquerque for breakfast and inspiration. The restaurant is owned by Tim Harris, a young man who has competed in numerous Special Olympics competitions throughout New Mexico, winning dozens of gold medals. Tim is a national spokesperson for Special Olympics, speaking on behalf of the organization in Seattle during its annual fundraising breakfast this past May. Finley attended the Special Olympics breakfast and was moved by Tim s story, and when he found out about the restaurant and committed to Seattle U s participation in the Lobo Classic, he made sure that the team would eat at Tim s Place and meet Tim the Man. As advertised, Tim was a gracious and welcoming host, and the team gave Tim a group hug after their meal. WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Sophomore setter Kerry Lane was named WAC Player of the Week on Oct. 6 after helping the Redhawks defeat Texas-Pan American and New Mexico State the previous weekend. She averaged 11.00 assists per set along with 1.43 blocks, 1.29 digs, 0.86 kills, and 0.43 service aces per set. 2014 WAC STANDINGS (as of Nov. 3, 2014) WAC Overall W-L Stk W-L Stk Kansas City 9-1 L1 21-4 L1 New Mexico St. 8-3 W2 14-9 W2 Bakersfield 7-4 W1 11-13 W1 Seattle U 6-4 W1 10-13 W1 Utah Valley 5-5 L1 10-16 L1 Grand Canyon 5-6 W3 16-9 W4 UT Pan American 2-9 L5 5-20 L5 Chicago State 0-10 L26 6-20 L12 WAC VOLLEYBALL TOURNAMENT: The 2014 WAC Volleyball Tournament will be held Nov. 20-22 at the Icardo Center on the campus of Cal State Bakersfield in Bakersfield, Calif.
