Your Journey Very little changes in Scotland and what does changes only slowly. This sense of timelessness is everywhere, reinforced by the fact that many families live on estates that have not changed hands for more than 600 years. To walk into a fortified house, a castle or a Georgian manor is to step into a dozen generations of living history. There is a sense of great pride and dignity in the integrity of being Scottish. All of the families are grand, even if some houses are more humble than others. From the romance of the people and its history to the allure of the land itself, one cannot help but feel transported through time. And as for the infamous Scottish Mist, it may moisten the skin but it will not dampen your enthusiasm. Quite frankly, it only adds to the magic of this enchanting place. Day 1 Arrive in Edinburgh You ll arrive in Edinburgh this morning and meet your Scottish guides at the airport for the short drive to the city centre and the Balmoral Hotel. One of Scotland's most iconic hotels and a real landmark of the city, this is a great location to stay in Edinburgh, and you ll have time to relax and recover from the journey before rejoining your guide for lunch in a local bistro. Then, if you have the energy, enjoy a walking tour of the historic city, through the ancient Old Town and down the Royal Mile to the Palace of Holyrood. It's a short climb to the summit of Edinburgh's mini-mountain, Arthur's Seat, for the very best views of the city and the North Sea coast. You ll have the chance to freshen up before dinner at No.20 Princes Street, offering great views over the city's skyline. Meals: Breakfast HOTEL The Balmoral The Balmoral is a truly majestic 5-star hotel. Like all of its Rocco Forte Hotel counterparts, it is extremely luxurious and splendid. Located in the heart of the city centre for shopping, culture, entertainment and sightseeing, it s now considered a city landmark. 2
St. Andrews and the Old Course We ll spend the next three days in the home of it all, the heart of the matter, the birthplace of golf as we know it St. Andrews. Over the next three days you ll have a chance to play the Old Course, Carnoustie, and newcomer Kingsbarns, using the Old Course Hotel as your base. Day 2 OLD COURSE, ST. ANDREWS This world-famous course with double greens, hidden bunkers, 17th road hole and the 18th hole with the valley of sin, has hosted 27 Open Championships and many other major competitions over the years. The Old Course at St. Andrews is a must for all avid golfers, who should make the pilgrimage at least once in their lifetime. We can guarantee you ll never forget an opportunity to play here though shooting a score worth remembering is another thing entirely. Day 3 CARNOUSTIE CHAMPIONSHIP The game of golf has been played at Carnoustie since before Columbus discovered America, making it one of the oldest courses in the world. The links have been played over the years by all the golfing greats and have acquired a deserved reputation as a demanding test of golfing ability. Carnoustie has hosted the British Open Championship, British Amateur Championship and is rightly reckoned to be among the toughest links courses in the world. Day 4 KINGSBARNS Located directly on the North Sea coast only six miles from St. Andrews, Kingsbarns is without a doubt one of the most breathtaking links courses ever developed. This new and exciting links course opened after the 2000 Open Championship and is considered the nearest thing to Pebble Beach outside of the USA. Meals: Breakfast all three days HOTEL The Old Course Hotel This fine resort hotel overlooks the manicured acres of its namesake Old Course and across to the sea beyond. It s an elegantly informal haven of luxury, warm hospitality and exquisite dining, offering some of the most luxurious accommodations in Scotland. All of the rooms are designed to offer a welcoming haven with contemporary fabrics, soft furnishings and marble touches in the bathrooms. The luxurious suites are spacious, finely appointed and offer fine panoramic views over the links courses to the sea. 3
Gleneagles Day 5 Today you will head north to Perthshire and the home of the 2014 Ryder Cup. The drive is a little over an hour to Gleneagles, but you will feel miles away from the breeze of the ocean, as the rolling hills of the Glens make for a different game altogether. PGA CENTENARY The PGA Centenary Course, set amongst the beautiful rolling Perthshire countryside, was designed by Jack Nicklaus and is a modern classic opened in 1993. It is a regular venue for the Johnnie Walker Championship, with past winners including Paul Casey and Adam Scott. The 2014 Ryder Cup pitting Europe s best against their American counterparts will be staged on this wonderful parkland course. HOTEL Gleneagles Hotel Located in Perthshire on 830 acres of rolling countryside, Gleneagles Hotel is one of the leading golf and spa luxury hotels in Scotland. Here you can choose from 232 luxurious bedrooms, including 13 exclusively decorated suites. The hotel has a choice of four restaurants, each with its own style, but the hallmark of every one is freshness and flavour. Inverness, the Gateway of the Highlands We ll venture further north for the next two days to Inverness, the gateway to the Highlands, coming deliciously close to Speyside and its famous fare. A two-hour drive through the Highlands puts you on the northern coast yet another region of this small but varied country where you ll spend the next two days golfing, using Culloden House as your base. 4
Day 6 ROYAL DORNOCH The jewel in the Highland golfing crown is definitely Royal Dornoch Golf Club. Universally rated one of the world's top-20 golf courses, the Royal Dornoch Championship Course is unique among the great links of Scotland in that it has never hosted the Open Championship. Not a reflection of its quality, this is solely because of Dornoch's northerly location. However remote it may be, this links course is a must-play on any golfing trip to Scotland. A stiff but fair test of golf, the Championship Course rewards the strategist who is on top of their game with the 6,626 yard layout presenting more than a match for most. Meal: Breakfast Day 7 CASTLE STUART Scotland is the home of golf, and just as Turnberry is to Ayrshire and Gleneagles is to Perthshire, Castle Stuart has been conceived as an equivalent golfing focal point for the Highlands a beacon reaching out to golfers throughout the world. The centrepiece for this destination golf resort is Castle Stuart Golf Links, a championship links course overlooking the Moray Firth and well-known landmarks that are synonymous with Inverness and the Black Isle (with Kessock Bridge and Chanonry Lighthouse perhaps the most notable). The resort includes a small luxury hotel and spa, resort-ownership lodges and apartments, plus a second Seaside Course. Castle Stuart s goal is to add to the rich fabric of golf in the Scottish Highlands a fabric made rich by Royal Dornoch, Nairn, Brora and many other fine golf clubs. Meal: Breakfast HOTEL Culloden House Arriving at Culloden House you could be forgiven for thinking you had strayed into a majestic private estate. The imposing Palladian mansion is set in 40 acres of parkland and gardens on the edge of Inverness, perfectly positioned for your headquarters of conquest and discovery. Originally a Jacobean castle, in 1746 Bonnie Prince Charlie requisitioned the building for his headquarters just prior to the tragic Battle of Culloden. 5
