The program aims to provide participants with a vastly different patrolling experience compared to what they would normally encounter. The program was a fantastic opportunity in regards to meeting new people, gaining valuable Surf Lifesaving experience and seeing how the operations of Surf Lifesaving in NSW work on a larger scale. Some of my personal highlights from the exchange were patrolling both a different beach, including patrolling Bondi, North Bondi and Maroubra and learning about the operations of Surf Lifesaving in other areas. Another highlight for me was both learning new skills and applying previously learned skills into practice. During the program, whilst patrolling on the offshore rescue boat, I was able to put aspects of my search and rescue training into practice, being a part of a real-life search and rescue situation. The program was a wonderful opportunity that I would highly recommend to future participants and I believe the experience has given me more motivation to remain involved in surf lifesaving. As a result of my participation in this program I was humbled to be selected as one of two representatives from NSW surf Lifesaving to attend an International Lifesaving exchange in New Zealand in March. I am very much looking forward to this extended opportunity. It is a great honour to be able to represent Merewether SLSC, Hunter Branch and Surf Lifesaving NSW at both a local, state and international level. Thank you! SPONSORS SPOTLIGHT JUICE PLUS+ For this month s newsletter, we caught up with Merewether Surf Club Major Sponsor Peter Glennie CEO from The Juice Plus Company Australia. Growing up on Sydney s Northern Beaches Peter was a member of both Warriewood and North Narrabeen Surf Clubs, and moved to Newcastle in 1991 to work in the Regional Fruit Market. In 1998 Peter was introduced to Juice Plus+, and having previous experience in sales and marketing with Hilton Hotels and the Sydney Fruit Markets it didn t take long for Peter and his wife Louise to embrace the concept. And then as the saying goes in 2005 they were so impressed they bought the company. Juice Plus + has had 100% growth in each of the last 2 years, and with beach regulars Celine and Mick Egan they are now expanding into NZ and Fiji. We attribute our current growth to the One Simple Change and Parents with a Purpose programs. Peter said there were a lot of similarities between Warriewood and Merewether, both being close knit clubs that were focused on no drownings and keeping people safe between the flags. As part of their sponsorship Juice Plus+ sails are placed on the promenade on each Patrol, a rescue board displays their logo and they will soon be featured on our Surf Club webcam. On behalf of the Committee and all Club members we would like to thank Peter, Louise, Celine, Mick and the Juice Plus+ team for their generous support. For more information on Juice plus+ please visit: http://www.juiceplus.com.au/jp NOTE : Health and wellness night featuring Juice Plus, Hosted by the Russel s at MSLSC March 1 st at 6:30pm, all are welcome to attend this free event.
LIFESAVING NEWS - RADIO UPDATE A new Radio Procedure has been developed to assist patrol members in using one of our most exciting pieces of equipment. It is hanging from the front right side of the Patrol hut so take a look next time your down on the beach. Radios are vital to patrol success - allowing us to log on/off with Surfcom, keep in touch with other members while on Patrol, and in working with Surfcom and other clubs on our stretch of the beach if an incident requires additional support and/or resources. Each week the Radio Team checks the radios after patrols - with a focus on ensuring all radios are working and on charge. Twice per month Henk checks the radios and chargers for sand, lubes the radios with CRC and tests them by calling Surfcom. If you have any radio issues, please advise your Patrol Captain so that it can be logged and the radio or other equipment tagged out and fixed. And remember the radio team are available to attend Patrols to assist with refresher sessions, however we would recommend booking early to avoid disappointment :) Henk / Dave DUCKS 4 DOLLARS UPDATE Thank you to those members who helped on Australia Day with the setting and cleaning up of the DUCKS down on Newcastle Harbour.
