Adaptation Adventures 3-5, p2 Imagine what your life would be like if you did not have thumbs. Tying your shoes, using a fork or playing video games would be more difficult without an opposable thumb. Because of this adaptation, humans are better able to survive in their environment. Every animal has adaptations that help it to survive in its habitat. Find an animal in the museum that interests you. Choose an adaptation that belongs to that animal. Decide whether that adaptation helps the animal to get food, move, protect itself, stay warm, or camouflage. Fill in the blanks for eight different animals. sharp claws feathers horns webbed feet scales beak hooves fins fur sharp teeth to. to. to. to. to BONUS: do not use their wings for flying in the air, but for flying through water.

Have to Have a Habitat 3-5, p3 Habitat is where a plant or animal lives. Different types of animals live in different types of habitats. All animals and humans must have food, water, shelter, and space in their habitat to survive. Choose three different animals in the museum and fill in the blanks with more information about their habitats. Desert Polar Wetlands Prairie Water Savanna # 1 # 2 # 3 BONUS: All habitats need to provide, _, _, and _.

- Investigation You are going to investigate some museum animals to decide whether they are predators or prey. Here are some facts to help you. A predator is an animal that eats other animals. A prey is an animal that is hunted by a predator. s are carnivores and eat meat, while most prey are herbivores and eat plants. But either could be an omnivore, and eat both meat and plants. have: teeth to eat plants Eyes on the side to watch out for predators Adaptations like horns for protection from predators s have: teeth or a sharp beak to eat meat Eyes in the front to see prey in the distance claws or talons to catch and kill prey Choose an animal and write its name in the first box. Then make careful observations and circle the correct response in each column. Don t be fooled by animals that eat both meat and plants, and have both sharp and flat teeth. 3-5, p4 Animal s Name Teeth Eyes Diet Food Habit or?

Conservation 3-5, p5 As the human population increases, conservation: to use or manage wisely, has become more and more important to the survival of many species worldwide. Habitat loss is the primary reason animals are becoming endangered. Introduction of invasive (non-native) species, disease, and pollution also play a role in declining populations. Without active wildlife management, many new species around the globe will be added to the endangered list and others will become extinct. There are fewer than 2000 giant pandas living in the wild today. Found only in China, pandas are suffering greatly from habitat loss as forests are cleared for timber and agriculture. Much of their remaining habitat is fragmented, leaving the pandas isolated in small pockets throughout China. Picky eaters, ninety-nine percent of a panda s diet is leaves, shoots and stems of. Another reason why Pandas are endangered is because they do not breed until they are. Rhinoceros once roamed throughout Africa, Europe and Asia. Today, four species of rhinoceros are in extreme danger of extinction, due to poaching and habitat loss. People poach rhinoceros for their. They grind them up for use in traditional Chinese and use them to make ceremonial handles in Yemen. Wetlands provide natural flood control, improve water quality by removing pollution, and are an important habitat to a variety of plants and animals. Nearly half of the animal species listed as endangered in the U.S. use wetlands during their lifetime. Can you name three Arizona animals that rely on wetlands to survive? BONUS: When we conserve nature and wildlife, we use it.
