upper hunter april 21 to april 27, 2012 The only way to find out what s going on! From Bareback to Bull Fighting Your Weekly Guide free It s a battle of man versus beast, a real test of fitness, agility, fear and passion. When you ask a bull fighter why they fight bulls, some say its for the money, some say for the adrenalin, but most of all they say its fun. But it s not just the buzz that keeps blokes like Geoffrey Hall in the game, these men go out into the arena and risk their own lives to keep Geoffery Hall in action. Photo by Yvonne Rice Photography Australia s toughest bull riders safe. Just returned from a week working as a protection athlete for the rodeo series at the Sydney Royal Easter Show, Hall and his bull fighting allies rest up for the next big event, with rodeos held across the country every weekend. A farrier by trade, Hall first started bull fighting five years ago taking a rest from the high intensity event of bareback riding. With a passion for the sport and love of fighting bulls, Hall travels far and wide with the Australian Bushmen s Campdraft and Rodeo Association National Finals one of his major performance events. Being a vital safety component of the sport of bull riding, protection athletes cannot be compared to rugby league players or any other athletes, as nothing can prepare them for a body crunching hit from a 1000 kilogram bull. But while Hall is flung metres through the air the crowd goes up with cheers as bull riding and rodeo rank as one of the most popular spectator sports in areas like the Upper Hunter. If bull fighting is what you want to see, there are two upcoming showcases with the hugely popular Scone Charity Rodeo during the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival, which is one of the biggest rodeos in the country. Scone will also host a Professional Bull Riders Association event in October with more bulls and action to see. Don t miss the Scone Charity Rodeo on Saturday, May 12 at White Park Scone. the equine trend & more Racing NSW Thoroughbred Retraining Program Racing NSW s Thoroughbred Retraining Program is an innovative not-forprofit program dedicated to finding new homes and careers for retired racehorses. Horses retired from racing are sourced by Racing NSW and first sent to St Heliers facility where they spell for approximately 6 months before their re education. The first 6 weeks is carried out at the prison by inmates under the watchful eye of experienced horsehandler/warders. Once spelled the horses move to Sydney where they are schooled in preliminary/novice dressage and are given an introduction to jumping. From here the horses are put up for sale. Former Mounted Police horse trainer, Scott Brodie, will be presenting a demonstration of some these horses on Thursday 17th May at White Park in Scone. Scott uses natural horsemanship techniques and the practical application of classical dressage to produce quality performance horses with a foundation to set them up for a future in any discipline. For more information contact scott.brodie@optusnet.com.au Junior Cattle Judging Singleton Beef and Land Management Association will hold its 20th annual Junior Cattle Judging Competition at Singleton Showground on Friday 27th April 2012 commencing at 9am. It is anticipated that in excess of 200 primary and secondary school students, from districts including the Central West, Hunter Valley and Central Coast, will attend the event. The event takes the form of a skills based competition and aims to provide an avenue for students to practice and apply knowledge acquired from their agricultural studies, in the selection of beef cattle. Students from 8 to 18 years of age will compete in 3 age categories assessing animals against criteria important for beef production. Experience. Sound advice. local gig guide Jane Rutter - An Australian in Paris in Scone Internationally acclaimed flutist Jane Rutter is to perform at the official opening of the Scone and Upper Hunter Horse Festival on Thursday May 10. Jane will entertain with a concert featuring a music / theatre piece from her most recent production An Australian in Paris. The concert will immediately follow the cocktail party announcing this years VIP. An Australian in Paris is a semi-autobiographical celebration of delicious French music, from Le Belle Époque to the present day. Using French poetry and her own anecdotes, Jane relates her experiences in this beautiful, romantic cite, alone with tales of many other artists, writers and musicians who have flocked there to form their artistic personalities. At the same time, she brings her incomparable artistry to the music of Debussy, Fauré, Piaf, Ravel, Aznavour and other French Favourites. I went to Paris at the age of 18 to study the flute with Jean-Pierre Rampal and Alian Marion, two of the instrument s great luminaries said Jane.
