Subaru is a proud sponsor of the Crescent Ski Council (CSC) Racing program. Part of their sponsorship package this year includes the VIP Discount program for all CSC members. Qualifying members of a CSC club can purchase or lease a new Subaru at 2% below dealer cost minus any incentives, which are currently being offered. To qualify, you must have been a member of Kanawha Ski Club (or other CSC Club) for at least six (6) months. If you are interested, please notify Ed Weis, the current president, at eweis@suddenlink.net or phone him at 304 549-0211. Inform him of your intent to participate. Subaru will mail the VIP information to you, which will include information about local dealers participating in the VIP program. Once you have received the information, you can go to a local dealer, pick out the Subaru that you want, the dealer will pull the invoice and let the purchaser know if there are any current incentives. You should not negotiate with the dealer until you get the paperwork from Subaru. Please take advantage of this wonderful benefit that Crescent Racing has secured for all CSC clubs. Editor s note Due to technical difficulties, neither the Steamboat article or April s flyer are in this newsletter PRESIDENTIAL PONTIFICATIONS Many of us had an enjoyable and instructive time at Steamboat last month in spite of a lack of natural snow and corresponding limited terrain. I appointed a committee (including myself) to write a recap of the week and asked Linda Redd, our editor, to meld the recaps into a seamless article. The result appears elsewhere in this issue. Let us know what you think of the effort. Todd Cook, with help from June Sale and others did a great job at last month s meeting. He deserves a lot of credit, especially for the invitations he sent out. April Young reminded us of the value of physically preparing for the slopes. She is going to offer a ski conditioning class. She sent an e- mail with information to those who expressed interest at the last meeting. A copy of the brochure is in this newsletter for those who were not at the last meeting. We have a great trip to prepare for. Whitefish, Montana has been getting a lot of snow lately, so the thin conditions which challenged the creativity of our instructors at Steamboat will not be a problem. A large contingent of KSC members will be venturing there for another week of the sport we love so much. West Virginia ski areas were blessed with a large snowfall about a week before Christmas. The KSC bulletin board is still running. Members can access it from the KSC web sit. Use it to organize last minute trips. Hope to see all of you at the January 6 th meeting. 2

Secret Santa a big Success Our Secret Santa program was really successful this year. Lisa Johnson volunteered to get the kids names and buy the presents and she did a great job. Between the splitthe-pot money and personal donations, we collected $258. That gave us the opportunity to help two children. Lisa selected two boys, aged 11 and 12. She got them gift cards for both computer games and I-Tunes, Nerf guns, hoodies, jeans, footballs and basket balls. All of these items were on their wish lists. Lisa shopped hard and managed to stretch the money enough to give each boy a good Christmas. A special thanks to Lisa and to all of the people who donated money to the cause. December Meeting Recap The KSC December was full of surprises. We had visits from past members, an unexpected speaker, and lots of great food, although that wasn t a surprise. Our planned speaker, Karen Rhodes from Canaan, had car trouble and couldn t make it. So we substituted April Young, a personal trainer, who has recently returned to the area, from Steamboat, and is trying to establish her training business. She discussed setting up a ski conditioning course if there is enough interest. Ed Weis can contact her if you are interested and didn t get to talk to her at the meeting. Annie Anderson, a long time, former KSC member dropped in to visit. She is retired and living in North Myrtle Beach now. Even though the speaker couldn t make it, she sent along a couple of door prizes. They were one day Canaan Valley lift tickets, for two people. Tom Connelly and Annie Anderson won the tickets. Todd Cook, Gene Teaney, and Jim Richards also won door prizes. Linda Redd won the split-the-pot. (It was about $55). We also raffled of the Skier s Edge machine. Barry Davis was the big winner. Overall the club make $35 with the raffle. Thanks again to John Wilkinson for donating it. After all that business, we settled in for some serious eating, enjoying ham and turkey, lots of potatoes, veggie dishes, and many, many desserts. It was a great feast, in our best pot luck tradition. Happy holidays to all. KSC Scrapbook A club scrapbook helps us keep our memories of all the great things that we do. Debbie James is once again putting together our club Scrapbook for the 2009/2010 year. You can help Debbie by sending her pictures, and other mementos of club activities. Her E-mail address is dsjhwv@hotmail.com. Her home address is 874 Chappell Road, Charleston, WV, 25304. She even has a scanner, so she can return pictures after scanning them, if you only have one copy. Thanks for your help. 3

Membership Contest As everyone knows, any club or organizations success depends on recruiting new members. In the past we have had successful membership drives and we are going to have another one this season. There are going to be incentives for our current members to recruit friends, co-workers and family to our club. Invite or bring a guest to a meeting and receive 1 point. If that guest joins the club, you will receive 2 more points. At the end of the contest, at our April meeting, your name will be added to the drawing once for each point you have earned. So, lets get busy, invite your friends and neighbors and lets watch our club grow. Even though we just announced the contest, we will giving credit from July 2009, the start of our fiscal year. The contest will run through the beginning of April. We will draw for prizes at the April meeting. Prizes will be 1 st : An article of KSC apparel, worth $50 or less; 2 nd : a single membership for the 2010/2011 season (worth $40); 3 rd : half a single membership for the 2010/2011 season (worth $20). The more the merrier really works for ski clubs, so recruit, recruit, recruit!!! Crescent Ski Council Kanawha Ski Club is part of the Crescent Ski Council. The trip includes a 2 or 3 night stay at the Silvercreek resort, lift tickets and a party on Saturday night. Anyone attending is eligible for prizes from Crescent sponsors. You don t have to be a racer to attend. Snowshoe has lowered their room rates this year, so it is a better deal than in the 4

past. A flyer is attached, or you can talk to Linda Redd, if you are interested. Myrtle Beach Trip Crescent Ski Council is holding it s 41 st spring convention at the Kingston Plantation, in Myrtle Beach. It is a great weekend of sun, parties, beach Olympics, and a trade show. We need a 50% deposit to book a room. Linda Redd is heading up the trip, so see her at the meeting, or give her a call at (304) 965-6714 if you are interested. The flyer is elsewhere in the newsletter. This and That We collected 15 coats at the November meeting, which we donated to Union Mission. Great going everyone Joyce Jones reported that she can get discount tickets for Canaan and Winterplace. If you are interested, contact Joyce. Linda Ellison reminded us that her annual Mardi Gras Party is coming up soon. The date is February 20 th. Be sure to mark the date on your calendar. There will be more information in the next newsletter. Crescent Ski Council has a program that lets members get discounted Ski Helmets from Giro. If you are interested, talk to Gene Teaney. He has a special VIP number that is needed to get the discount. Bill Sale will be taking orders for ski club apparel at the January meeting. There are lots of choices but take some time and see what s there. We haven t done this in a while. KSC is registered as a club on Facebook. If you are on Facebook already, you can join. It will keep you up to date about what we are doing as a club. If you aren t on facebook, why not join? It s not hard. Just go to Facebook.com to get started.
