HC Rich Maloney Rich Maloney, head coach at Ball State, won his 700th game as a collegiate head coach in 2015. He is in his second head coaching stint at BSU, originally serving from 1996-2002 and returning in 2013. He has led Ball State to four MAC titles as well as its only two 40-win seasons in program history (1997, 1999). In 2014, Maloney led Ball State to the MAC regular season championship, a MAC West Division title and the No. 1 seed in the MAC Tournament. The Cardinals ranked as high as 26th in the nation in the Collegiate Baseball Poll. For his efforts, Maloney was named the MAC Coach of the Year for a third time in his career (1998, 2001, 2014). A year later, the Cardinals made a late season surge and reached the 2015 MAC Tournament championship game. From 2003-12, Maloney was the head coach at Michigan. He guided the Wolverines to three Big Ten conference titles and the 2007 NCAA Regional title. He was named the 2007 and 2008 Big Ten and ABCA Mideast Regional Coach of the Year. Maloney has mentored 57 players who have been drafted, including five first round selections. In 2002, he helped Bryan Bullington become the only No. 1 overall draft pick in both Ball State and MAC history. Maloney was an All-American collegiate baseball player at Western Michigan and spent six seasons playing in the Atlanta Braves organization. He is currently serving as the ABCA second vice president. He made his first start on April 5 against the Pittsburgh Pirates where he went 1-for- 3 with a solo home run. In the Cardinals home opener on April 11, Hazelbaker went 4-for-4, with a triple and a double. He also had a diving catch in left field that helped the Cards to a 10-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers. The outfielder was a part of the Ball State Cardinals team from 2007-09. 8Preserving the Lead: Ball State is 21-0 this season when leading after seven innings. RHP BJ Butler has tallied seven saves in 16 appearances. His most recent save came on April 5 versus Xavier. 8MAC West Player of the Week: 1B Caleb Stayton took home the honors on April 11. Stayton went a combined 11-for-17 (.647) in four games against Western Michigan and Xavier during that week. In the 21-1 win over Western Michigan, Stayton tied a career high with six RBIs. He ended the game going 5-for-6 at the plate with two doubles and his first career triple. Stayton currently ranks third nationally with 54 RBIs, which is already more than any Cardinal racked up in 2015. 8MAC West Pitcher of the Week: LHP Kevin Marnon took home his second Pitcher of the Week award for his April 10th outing against Western Michigan. He pitched seven scoreless innings, only giving up four singles. Marnon held Western Michigan to a.160 batting average, while tallying five strikeouts in the 21-1 victory. This marks the second time this season that Ball State players have been named both Player and Pitcher of the Week. 8MAC West Player of the Week: RF Alex Call took home the honors on April 4 after tallying three hits in all four games against Valparaiso and Ohio that week. In the 17-14 win over Ohio, Call finished a single shy of the cycle. Half of Call s hits that week went for extra bases as he tallied three doubles, a triple and two home runs. Call scored 11 times and knocked in 10 runs as well. 8Runs, Runs and More Runs: The Cardinals exploded for 20 runs in their victory over Ohio on April 3, marking the most runs scored since the Cardinals matched that same number on April 5, 2014 in a 20-5 win over Eastern Michigan. Ball State s top three batters in the lineup RF Alex Call, SS Alex Maloney and 1B Caleb Stayton combined to go 10-for- 16 at the plate with three home runs, two doubles, nine runs scored and 13 RBIs. 8Clear the Bases!: 1B Caleb Stayton hit a grand slam in Ball State s 20-3 win over Ohio on April 3. It marked Ball State s first grand slam since C Jarett Rindfleisch cleared the bases on March 29, 2015 in a 16-8 win over Buffalo. 8Ball State Sweeps MAC Honors: SS Alex Maloney and RHP Zach Plesac took home the MAC Player/Pitcher of the Week honors on March 28. Plesac arguably put together one of the best collegiate pitching performances of the season at Miami on March 26. The righty tossed a two-hit, complete game shutout in the 9-0 win over the RedHawks. He struck out a career-high 11 batters and only allowed one base runner the final four innings. 8RBI Machine: 1B Caleb Stayton enters this weekend leading the league in RBIs with 54. Stayton has tallied at least five RBIs in three games this season. 8Standout Bullpen: In Ball State s 9-8 win over Purdue on March 22, the Cardinals bullpen scattered four hits over the final seven innings and only allowed one run. RHP Zach Plesac was especially effective, going 3.0 innings, striking out three and only giving up a single. 8One Big Inning: Ball State racked up 10 runs in the third inning in its 10-0 win over Dayton on March 19. The 10 runs were the most scored by the Cardinals in one inning since Ball State tallied 10 runs in the third inning against Toledo on May 14, 2009. 1B Caleb Stayton, SS Alex Maloney and RF Alex Call all homered in the big inning. 3 BallStateSports.com @BallStateSports #ChirpChirp 2016 Cardinal Baseball @BallStateBB @CoachMaloney 3
