Welcome to our fourth edition of the Munce Racing Newsletter MUNCE RACING OPEN DAY KEEP YOUR MORNING FREE Our next Open Day will be held on Sunday the 26 th March at the Doomben Racecourse Parade Ring so keep that morning free. The start time is yet to be confirmed but all current owners and interested guests will have the opportunity to meet our new yearlings and see the quality of the horses on offer. All yearlings that have been purchased this year will be paraded so if you are looking to join a group or purchase a horse outright, we will have ownership opportunities available to suit everyone. Chris will also provide his valuable expertise in what he looks for in selecting a racehorse for the Munce Racing stable. More information on this event will be issue soon. 2017 MAGIC MILLIONS QTIS YEARLING SALE 20 & 21 MARCH Chris will be heading to the Gold Coast in March to attend the Magic Millions QTIS Yearling Sale. With more affordable lots to inspect and bid on than the January sale Chris is hoping to come home with plenty of new horses for the stables. It is from these sales that Chris found Wicked Intent, Ours To Keep and Nicconi Leggera to name a few. Any purchases made by Munce Racing will be on our website that day. If you would like Chris to inspect or purchase a yearling on your behalf, please do not hesitate in contacting him on 0418 221 570. Link to the 2017 catalogue: http://ecat.magicmillions.com.au/viewall/17gqr 2017 CAPRICORN YEARLING SALE ROCKHAMPTON SUNDAY 02 APRIL For the first time Chis will be attending the Capricorn Yearling Sale in Rockhampton. There have been some quality horses sold over the years and the 2017 catalogue is shaping up to be the best on record. The calibre of yearlings nominated is right up there including a draft of yearlings from Aquis Farm on the Gold Coast and Oaklands Stud on the Darling Downs. Probably the most famous sale graduate is River Lad. Now retired, the bay gelding by Top Echelon, won nearly $1.8million in prize money including the Group 3 BRC Sprint and the Group 1 Stradbroke. Hard to believe he was passed in at the sale for $4,000. Prior to the CQTBA Sale on the Sunday, the Rockhampton Jockey Club hold a two-day meeting on the Friday and Saturday with the pinnacle being the Capricorn Yearling Sale 2YO Classic over 1200 metres. This year the prize money for the race is $118,000. Another added bonus is that out of the 95 yearlings nominated for the sale, 89 of them are either QTIS or QTIS 1 st payment registered. Chris will be there hoping to find a bargain that will turn out to be the 2018 Capricorn Yearling Sale 2YO Classic winner.

THE 2017 INGIS CLASSIC YEARLING SALE 11,12,13 FEBRUARY The first of Inglis Select Yearling Sales for the year kicked off on Saturday, February 11 which saw 600 horses enter the ring. Progeny by over more than 100 stallions, including 15 first season sires, were on show. All yearlings offered at the sale are eligible for entry into the $5 million Inglis Race Series covering their 2YO, 3YO and 4YO racing seasons. Travelling down on the Saturday afternoon Chris and Cathy were able to purchase another 2 yearlings for the stable. Lot 52 Hinchinbrook x Mystic Belle (Success Express) bay filly 90% still available Chris was very impressed with this Hinchinbrook filly and thought she was one of the nicest fillies he saw at the sales. She has a lovely deep girth, powerful hindquarters and is sensationally balanced. Chris was also highly impressed with her breeding. This filly is bred on a highly successful nick between Snippets, sire of the dam of Hinchinbrook, and Success Express (USA), a renowned broodmare sire that has sired the dams of 31 stakes-winners headed by 11 Group I winners highlighted by Cox Plate winners Pinker Pinker, Savabeel (who Chris rode to victory in the 2004 Cox Plate) and Shamus Award, not to mention sizzling sprint queens Sea Siren and Gold Edition. The filly will be aimed towards the Inglis Classic race next year for 2-year-olds. It is run on the Saturday the Inglis Classic Sales commences. This race is like the Magic Millions 2-year-old race in January. It is designed for horses that have been specifically sold at that sale. Although she will mainly race here in Queensland, Chris will look at races over the border for BOBS bonuses as well. Lot 193 Spirit of Boom x Serpent (Peintre Celebre) - bay colt Sold Out! On the second day of the sales Chris purchased an attractive colt by first season sire Spirit of Boom out of a Peintre Celebra mare, Serpent. He has a beautiful head, great length to him, superb athleticism and a commanding presence. On his dam s side he is closely related to Excited Angel and is also related to Text n Hurley, Typhoon, Aquiver and Delago s Secret. His dam s sire, Peintre Celebra, was named European Horse of the Year and European Champion 3-year-old colt. His major wins were as a 3-year-old in the Prix Greffulhe, Prix du Jockey Club, Grand Prix de Paris and the Prix de l'arc de Triomphe. The colt is QTIS and Inglis Race Series nominated and, like the Hinchinbrook filly, will also be aim towards the 2018 Inglis Classic Race. Hinchinbrook x Mystic Belle filly Spirit of Boom x Serpent colt

To date Michael has had approx. 720 rides with 67 winners. Congratulations Michael from all at Munce Racing and we hope to see you in the winner s circle on a Saturday afternoon very soon. The origins of the modern thoroughbred: All modern Thoroughbreds trace back to three stallions imported into England from the Middle East in the late 17th and early 18th centuries: the Byerley Turk (1680s), the Darley Arabian (1704), and the Godolphin Arabian (1729). In this newsletter we will look at probably the most well-known of the three stallions, the Godolphin Arabian. The famous Godolphin Arabian, so central to modern thoroughbred bloodstock, was foaled in Yemen around 1724. Also known as the Godolphin Barb, he was a bay colt, with a little white on his off-hind pastern (heel) and stood 14.3 hands high. He was exported, via Syria to Tunis, as one of four horses presented by the Bey of Tunis to the King of France. Bought in Paris by Englishman Edward Coke, the horse was taken to Coke s estate at Longford Hall in Derbyshire. When Coke died in August 1733 the Arabian was sold to Francis, 2nd Earl of Godolphin; whence he gets his name. While, according to the records, the horse never raced, he was an outstanding success at stud. Although he only sired about 80 foals in a career lasting 22 years, he was leading sire three times, in 1738, 1745 and 1747. The Godolphin Arabian died in 1753, aged 29 and is buried at Wandlebury Hall in Cambridgeshire. His lasting influence on succeeding generations of thoroughbreds can be gauged from the fact that 50 years after his death, the first 76 British Classic winners had at least one strain of him in their pedigree. Many great modern champions such as Seabiscuit, Man O War and more recently English superstars Kauto Star and Desert Orchid have been found to be descendants of the Godolphin Arabian. His blood can also be found in one of England s most famous stallion in Eclipse. Eclipse was foaled during and named after the solar eclipse of 1 April 1764, at the Cranbourne Lodge stud of his breeder, Prince William Augustus, Duke of Cumberland. It was at this stud that his sire, the Jockey Club Plate winner Marske stood. His dam, Spilletta, was by Regulus, who was by the Godolphin Arabian. He went through his racing career undefeated winning 18 races including 11 King s Plate. So highly regarded is this stallion in the racing world the Americans named their yearly awards the Eclipse Awards. The Godolphin Arabian Eclipse
