UPCOMING TIME CHANGE: Notre Dame s game on Friday, Dec. 7 versus Michigan State has had the start time changed from 7:35 p.m. to 7:05 p.m. The game will be televised live by the NBC Sports Network. NORTH DAKOTA RECAP: Friday, Nov. 23 - The University of North Dakota got goals from Nick Mattson and Danny Kristo and junior goaltender Clarke Saunders stopped 34-of-35 shots as UND held off Notre Dame for a 2-1 win in front of a sellout crowd at the Compton Family Ice Arena on Friday. Anders Lee (Edina, Minn.) scored Notre Dame s lone goal in the game on a second-period powerplay chance. It looked like Lee had a goal late in the game that would have tied it but that was waved off when the referee said a puck had been frozen. Replays showed differently. North Dakota scored its first goal late in the first period as Mattson scored on a slap shot from the center point at 19:57 of the first period. Kristo made it 2-0 on the power play at 2:43 of the second with a backhander off a nice set up by Corban Knight who had two assists in the game. The Irish cut that lead in half at 5:25 of the second with Lee s power-play goal. Freshman Mario Lucia (Plymouth, Minn.) put a shot from the right point on goal that Lee was able to deflect and then jam the rebound past Saunders for his sixth goal of the season. The Irish would out shoot North Dakota, 36-17, in the game. Notre Dame s Steven Summerhays (Jr., Anchorage, Alaska) had 15 saves for the Irish. Notre Dame was 1-for-5 on the power play while North Dakota was 1-for-2. Saturday, Nov. 24 - Anders Lee, Jeff Costello (Jr., Milwaukee, Wis.) and Kevin Lind (Jr., Homer Glen, Ill.) each had three-point games and goaltender Steven Summerhays stopped 30 shots as Notre Dame downed North Dakota, 5-2, in the second game of the series. Lee and Costello each had two goals and an assist while Lind scored a short-handed goal with a pair of assists in the win. Mark MacMillan and Rocco Grimaldi scored for North Dakota. Lee scored the first goal of the game at 7:23 of the first period with a backhander past goaltender Zane Gothberg. UND tied the game at 5:07 of the second as MacMillan cashed in on a 2-on-1 with Danny Kristo to make it 1-1. Lind put the Irish ahead to stay at 6:09 with a 4-on-3 shorthanded goal as his slapshot from the left point deflected over Gothberg s right shoulder for Lind s first of the season. Lee scored the game winner at 13:30 when Costello found him in the slot and he whipped a wrist shot past Gothberg for his eighth of the year and a 3-1 lead. The Notre Dame captain returned the favor late in the third when he set up a Costello goal on a wrist shot from the left circle at 18:34 to make it 4-1. Grimaldi beat Summerhays from the right face-off dot at 18:47 to make it 4-2 and Costello notched his second of the game, scoring into an empty net at 19:41 for the final of 5-2. The Irish out shot North Dakota, 41-32, with Gothberg making 36 saves in the game. Both teams were 0-for-5 on the power play. WEATHERING THE STORM: Last weekend s series with seventh-ranked North Dakota closed out a streak of 11 consecutive games for Notre Dame versus nationally ranked teams. The streak that started on Oct. 18 versus Minnesota Duluth saw the Irish win seven of the 11 contests. Here is a look at Notre Dame s recent schedule against ranked teams. The Irish are 8-0-0 when they get the first goal of the game and 1-4-0 when the opposition scores first. OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK: Junior center Anders Lee was named the CCHA Postgame Offensive Player of the Week for his play in the series versus North Dakota. The Edina, Minn., native scored three goals with one assist for four points, scoring one powerplay goal and one game winner. He had 14 shots in the two games, including a careerbest nine in the 5-2 win, added a blocked shot and was +1 for the weekend. This is his second offensive player of the week honor as he also was named the week of Nov. 5. CAREER NIGHT: Junior defenseman Kevin Lind turned in a career-best three-point game (1g, 2a) in the 5-2 win over North Dakota. His goal was the first short-handed goal of his career and snapped a 49-game, goal-scoring drought. Prior to Saturday s game, Lind s last goal came on Oct. 8, 2011 versus Minnesota Duluth. MULTIPLE-GOAL GAMES: Left wing Jeff Costello recorded the first multiple-goal game of his Notre Dame career in the 5-2 win over North Dakota (Nov. 24). Costello s threepoint game equaled a career-best set versus Lake Superior on 3/11/11. The junior from Milwaukee, Wis., now has five points in his last three games (3g, 2a). Anders Lee recorded his second multiple-goal game this season in the same contest and now has 10 games with two or more goals in his Irish hockey career.

2012-13 Notre Dame Fighting Irish Hockey Game Notes Page 5 RARE SWEEP: Notre Dame s back-to-back wins at Michigan on Nov. 15-16 marked just the fourth all-time sweep for the Irish at Yost Arena in the program s history. The last time that Notre Dame won a series at Michigan came on Feb. 3-4, 1978 when the two teams were members of the WCHA, 35 seasons ago. The previous sweeps came in 1970-71, 1972-73 and 1977-78. This marked the 22nd, two-game series played between the two programs in the 45-year history of the program. SHARING THE WEALTH: Through the first 13 games of the 2012-13 season, 14 different Notre Dame players have scored the team s 37 goals with Anders Lee leading the way with eight. Junior left wing Jeff Costello is second with five. Nineteen of the team s 22 skaters have scored at least one point with Lee leading the way with 13 points. Seven different players have scored game-winning goals for the Irish with Bryan Rust and Steven Fogarty leading the way with a pair. PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: Sophomore defenseman Robbie Russo (Westmont, Ill.) and junior goaltender Steven Summerhays were honored by the CCHA for their play in the Michigan series. Russo was named the Gladiator defensive player of the week as he had two goals and one assist for three points. He had five shots in the two games was +2 and added two blocked shots. Summerhays held the No. 2 ranked offense (4.22 goals per game) to just two on the weekend and stopped 52-of-54 shots for a.963 save percentage and two wins. SEEMS LIKE OLD TIMES: When Notre Dame swept Michigan in the 1977-78 season, two members of that team were forward Kevin Nugent, Sr. 78 and defenseman Don Lucia 81. It would take 35 seasons for the Irish to duplicate the sweep feat at Yost Arena and again the Notre Dame roster had a Nugent and a Lucia on it. Senior forward Kevin Nugent, Jr. (New Canaan, Conn.) and freshman forward Mario Lucia (Plymouth, Minn.) were members of this year s team with Lucia scoring a goal in the victory. GOING ON THE OFFENSIVE: Two of Notre Dame s defensemen - sophomore Robbie Russo and junior Stephen Johns - are among the team s top five scorers this season. Russo is tied for second on with nine points (4g, 5a) The four goals ties his season output from 2011-12 when he had four in 40 games. Johns is fifth and leads the Irish with seven assists for his seven points. The seven assists are already more than he had last season when he had six helpers in 39 games. IRISH VERSUS WCHA: Notre Dame has six games on its schedule this season versus teams from the WCHA and is 3-2-0 so far. The Irish opened the year with a 3-2 win over Nebraska Omaha in the championship game of the Ice Breaker Tournament (Oct. 13). Notre Dame then started the home schedule with two games against Minnesota Duluth (Oct. 18-19), splitting those contests, losing 3-1, and then taking a 4-1 decision. The Irish picked up another split with North Dakota (Nov. 23-24), losing the first CCHA Preseason Picks The coaches and the media from the CCHA agreed to disagree on their top teams for the 2012-13 season. The Hockey City Classic is being organized by the Chicago-based sports and entertainment marketing agency Intersport, in partnership with Soldier Field and the Chicago Park District. Notre Dame hockey is no stranger to the city of Chicago as the Irish have played hockey in the Windy City on and off since the 1966-67 campaign when the Notre Dame club team played in the first-ever college hockey tournament at Chicago Stadium. Since then, the Irish have played more than 40 games in and around Chicago, playing at Lake Forest (1969-70 and from 1985-91), at Chicago Stadium (1971 and 1972), at the University of Illinois-Chicago (1979-82 and 1988-96 as CCHA rivals), at Allstate Arena (2003 and 2005) and most-recently, at the Sears Centre in Hoffman Estates, Ill., where Notre Dame hosted the Shillelagh Tournament from 2009-11. The 2012-13 Notre Dame hockey roster features six players with ties to the Chicago area: The group includes senior Sam Calabrese, juniors Kevin Lind (Homer Glen) and T.J. THE FINAL COUNTDOWN: The 2012-13 season marks the final year for the Central Collegiate Hockey Association. Due to the shift in the college hockey landscape last season, the conference saw its teams shift as Michigan, Michigan State and Ohio State will now play in the Big 10 hockey conference, beginning in 2013-14 along with Minnesota, Penn State and Wisconsin from the WCHA. When those teams pulled out of their respective conferences, the National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) was created, taking in teams from the WCHA and the CCHA. That conference includes: Colorado College, Denver, Miami, Minnesota Duluth, Nebraska-Omaha, North Dakota, St. Cloud State and Western Michigan. The remaining CCHA teams then joined the remaining WCHA teams in the WCHA that now includes: Alaska, Bowling Green, Ferris State, Lake Superior State and Northern Michigan. Notre Dame then made its conference choice and joined Hockey East. CONFERENCE CALL: Notre Dame begins its final season in the Central Collegiate Hockey Association (CCHA) in 2012-13. The Irish will begin play in the Hockey East Association beginning with the 2013-14 campaign. The change in conferences was announced on Oct. 5, 2011 with a press conference that was held at the Compton Family Ice Arena. In making the announcement, Hockey East commissioner Joe Bertagna said, It is not an overstatement to say that this is one of the most significant days in the history of our conference. The addition of new institutions is always exciting but Notre Dame brings a unique set of qualities and circumstances to the continued growth of our league. We are proud to welcome Notre Dame into the fold and we look forward to getting to the many details that come with this announcement. Notre Dame Vice President and Director of Athletics Jack Swarbrick said, We are excited to be joining Hockey East beginning in the 2013-14 season. Many factors played a role in our decision, but three were of special importance to us. The first two were the critical issues of the studentathlete experience and Notre Dame s fit with the other schools in the conference. But of special importance in this instance, was our goal of giving our hockey program an unprecedented level of national exposure through our expanded partnership with the NBC Sports Group. Athletics at Notre Dame has always served as a platform for promoting the University. Notre Dame head coach Jeff Jackson added, We are honored and pleased to join Hockey East for the 2013-14 season. The conference is an established league with a great tradition and outstanding programs that share Notre Dame s values. The exposure for our players and team in a major media and NHL market will be second to none. Hockey East s commitment to playing a smaller league schedule will allow us to enhance our home and non-conference schedule with traditional western and Big Ten rivals. This will allow us to bring great games to the Compton Family Ice Arena and create
