USC HORSES AT WORK Guidelines 2012 Membership to the NSHJ is strongly recommended. NSEF or EC membership is required to participate as a competitor. In the event a competitor is not an NSEF or EC member, then they will be required to provide written proof of liability ($5 million). Mission: To provide a venue for riders and/or horses to gain experience and develop their abilities to excel in equestrian sport To create a safe and enjoyable experience for horses/riders/spectators To provide an opportunity for horses and riders to learn to train and compete Principles: Each competition will conduct its competition within the guidelines outlined below and within the realm of conventional hunter, jumper and equitation rules as those which govern licensed competitions in Canada. Coaches and competitors, by entering the competition, agree to use prudent judgment and exhibit good sportsmanship. The competition management retains the right of final decision. Our designated Risk Management Official is responsible along with the competition management to ensure that the guidelines are followed. As a competition organizer, we endeavor to engage the services of competent knowledgeable individuals. Note that EC Officials are as of yet not allowed to officiate at non EC competitions in this province. As a competition organizer, an EMERGENCY RESPONSE PLAN will be in place. Our competition retains liability coverage and demands the same from each competitor on the show grounds. An entry will not be allowed to compete until their entry form is signed. USC Horses At Work, its Management, Organizing Committee, Officials or Show Staff are in no way responsible for accident, injury or damage to any rider, exhibitor, spectator, groom, attendant, trainer or other employee; or animals, nor theft, loss or damage to animals, vehicles or equipment. Although divisions in both hunter and jumper over 0.9M (3 ) are small and sometimes have no entries, we will offer them as schedule permits to encourage and provide a platform for riders to move up. Page 4

USC HORSES AT WORK All competitors note: As a safety measure it is mandatory that all persons mounted on horseback anywhere on the competition grounds wear protective headgear secured with a safety harness permanently affixed to the helmet. (b) Junior Competitors must wear proper fitting, approved protective headgear, with the safety harness correctly secured, at all times while mounted on competition or event grounds. Approved headgear meets the ASTM (American Society for Testing Materials) standards and displays the SEI (Safety Equipment Institute) seal. The British standard, BSI, is also acceptable. The rule that doesn't allow competitors to get back on their horse after falling off in the show ring and take a fence before exiting was made with rider safety and well-being in mind as well as protection for the Show Organizers and Show Officials. Riders may not remount in the ring. Riders will only be allowed to come back in the ring with approval of parents, coach and competition management. This rule will apply. Any competitor that may in the opinion of officials and/or competition management be considered riding at risk of injury to themselves or their horse will be asked to withdraw from further competition. Schooling tack and horse boots may be worn but it is up to the discretion of the judge as to whether or not the horse is dependent on the equipment. Proper Rider attire is to be of show ring level. Half chaps are acceptable but full chaps are not. Hunt coats and show shirts are to be worn for competition and for award of prizes in all hunter horsemanship and flat competitions. Casual attire is acceptable in jumper classes; polo shirts of conservative colors with collars may be worn tucked in. Jumper Competitors please note: There is not a posted time allowed for any of our courses. The day is designed to introduce and develop skills of horses/ponies and riders in a jumper style environment. Jumper rounds Competitor will follow the posted course. Two refusals on course will result in elimination. riders may take the first fence of the course and only once after the bell. In case of a rider or horse fall, riders are to leave the ring unmounted. if there is time in the day, the rider may return at end of class if cleared by their coach/guardian and ride the course again without a score RIDE SAFE AND HAVE A GREAT DAY! Please respect our property and ensure that garbage, bottles, items are not left behind, please use our garbage bins Page 5

Lucy Cuthbertson Memorial Fund In February 2005, Lucy Faith Cuthbertson, at the age of 24, died of meningitis in London, England. In memory of their beloved daughter and sister, Brian, Lindsay and Richard have established, in association with the Halifax Junior Bengal Lancers, the Lucy Cuthbertson Memorial Fund. As a young girl, Lucy joined her older brother as a rider with the Lancers. Her love of horses and riding meant that she literally grew up at Lancers, becoming a qualified instructor for young riders. As well as riding Lucy played basketball for St. Patrick s High School and for the University of King s College. While completing her Masters in Economics at McGill University, she was a stalwart member of a Triathlon Club. The Cuthbertson Family and the Lancers have signed an Agreement that the annual income from the Fund will be used each year to send selected children to a riding camp at Lancers. These camps will teach the fundamentals of riding and encourage the participants to take an active role in the care of horses and to develop a strong sense of responsibility and self-respect. The Nova Scotia Amateur Sport Fund has approved the Fund and its purposes, enabling contributions to qualify as charitable donations under the Income Tax Act. http://www.bengallancers.com METRIC CONVERSION CHART 10 = 25.4cm; 10 cm = 4 2 3-0.70m 4 9-1.45m 2 6-0.75m 5 0-1.50m 2 9-0.85m 5 3-1.60m 3 0-0.90m 5 6-1.70m 3 3-1.00m 5 9-1.75m 3 6-1.10m 6 0-1.80m 3 9-1.15m 6 3-1.90m 4 0-1.20m 6 6-2.00m 4 3-1.30m 6 9-2.10m 4 6-1.40m 7 0-2.20m Since 10cm equals 4 inches, it should be noted that exact equivalents are not possible.
