HUNTER PADDLE CHALLENGE INFORMATION EVENT INFORMATION About the Hunter Paddle Challenge The Hunter Paddle Challenge offers keen paddlers the choice of a full 60km course or a half 30km course. The route traverses the scenic upper reaches of the Hunter River from Lorn near Maitland through farm land to historic Morpeth and on to Raymond Terrace, where the shorter course starts, and continues to Hexham passing by nature reserves at Ash Island and finally finishes near the rivers end at Stockton. When: Sunday 8th September 2013 Categories: Stand up Paddle Boards, Kayak, Dragon Boat, Surf Boat, Outriggers. Where: Full course - From the boat ramp at the bridge across the Hunter River at Lorn, near Maitland. Start time: 6:30am Course Length: 60km Approx. Duration: 8 hours Half course - From the boat ramp at the river crossing at Raymond Terrace. Start Time: 9am Course length: 30km Approx. Duration: 4 hours Note: Both courses end at the boat ramp at Pelican Park, Stockton. We reserve the right to change the course to suit weather conditions on the day. Back again for 2013 on the Newcastle calendar organised by the Hunter Wetlands Centre located off the roundabout, Sandgate Road, Shortland. All proceeds from the event will go towards supporting the environmental projects undertaken by the organisation. Founded in 1984 by a group of conservationists, the 45 hectare site is a wetland of international significance recognised under the Ramsar agreement and is a safe haven for local and migrating birdlife and a home to a wide range of native flora and fauna. The Hunter Wetland Centre is a community run self funded organisation with charity tax deductable status. Maps: All paddlers and accompanying landcrew will receive maps according to their race. Landcrew Paddlers must organise their own landcrew to set down and pick up. Landcrew must be contactable by mobile phone throughout the race to tend to their paddlers for early pick up or in the case of an emergency. Equipment Buoyancy vests (PFD) Requirement For both legal and safety reasons all paddlers must wear a fastened Personal Flotation Device (PFD) that complies with the Australian Standards during the Hunter Paddle Challenge. PFD vests which conform are: AS1499 Type 2, AS2260 Type 3; and AS4758.1 Level 50 and 50S. Remember to re-fasten your PFD before leaving checkpoints, especially if you remove it to change clothes. Stand Up paddlers must wear a leg rope and a bumbag style PFD. Paddlers must obey this rule otherwise you may be disqualified and directed to leave the course. Compulsory Equipment Each paddler must have the following equipment. You must present it all for checking when you go through marshalling. The Hunter Paddle Challenge is a demanding event, so your safety equipment must be in good working order. Compulsory equipment can be checked at anytime throughout the event by race officials. If you are missing this equipment you may be disqualified. Each paddler must have: 1. A verified buoyancy vest: - The PFD must have Australian Standards compliance label (see above) 2. Sufficient solid food and drink Stand Up Paddlers must have food and drink available at checkpoints by their Landcrew. 3. Canoe number: (supplied at start). Each craft preferably should have: 1. Waterproof torch: (additional to the PFD light) with either LED bulbs and reflector, or incandescent globes powered by at least 2 x D size batteries. Dolphin torches, 2-D maglites and most new LED lamps are acceptable. The torch must be attached to the craft so that the paddler can retrieve it while seated in his or her normal position. Stand up Paddlers may use a miners style headlamp or any other type of head mounted light. 2. Pea-less whistle: This must be attached to the paddler s PFD via a short string. Toy whistles are not suitable. 3. Recovery gear: For larger crafts (dragonroots/ surfboats/ outriggers) Tow ropes, manual pumps, paddle floats. All of this gear is the participants reasonability to maintain and carry There may be random checks of compulsory equipment throughout the Hunter Paddle Challenge by race officials. Pre-event Event Briefing There will be a pre-event briefing the afternoon before the race at 4pm on Saturday 7th September. This will take place at the Hunter Wetlands Centre, 412 (off the roundabout) Sandgate Rd, Shortland. All paddlers and support Landcrew are strongly encouraged to attend. The pre-event briefing is compulsory for all volunteers assisting on the race day. Race Day Registration and Start Full course Half course Registration /suit up 5:15am 6:00am 7:30 8:15 am Briefing 6:00am 8:30 am Start 6:30am 9:00am We encourage you to register early to avoid a last minute rush. It also enables us to get through the registrations with reasonable time to spare. Late registration Paddlers registering after 6.30am for full race or 8.15am for half race will do so at the discretion of the Event Co-ordinator and will be subject to an automatic fifteen minute time penalty. Important last minute information on river conditions will be given at that time. Paddlers in the first start at 7.00am are reminded that they should attend the briefing dressed ready to start as they will be marshalled straight after the briefing.
