Day 1 What Is Air Pressure? November 28, 2017

Review: What is Climate & Weather? Yesterday we talked about the difference between Climate and weather. So what is Climate? Climate: is the average weather pattern of a region over a period of time. What is Weather? Weather: is what it is like outside at any given place and time. What is the difference between Climate and Weather? Climate is the average weather of a region over TIME. As Weather is what it is like outside at any moment.

How Can Air Pressure Change? Just like there are factors that determine weather and climate there are also factors that can affect air pressure. Those include... *Volume: $As Volume decreases Air Pressure Increases and as Volume Increases Air Pressure Decreases. *Height Above Earth's Surface: $Air Pressure is greatest at Sea Level because the air molecules are packed tightly together. So as you go up in the atmosphere Air Pressure Decreases. *Volume decreases = Air Pressure Increases *Volume Increases = Air Pressure Decreases *Air Pressure greatest and Sea Level *Air Pressure decreases as you go up

How Can Air Pressure Change? Other factors that can affect air pressure: *Temperature: $When it's HOT air pressure Decreases. (Hot=Decrease) $When it's COLD air pressure Increases. (Cold=Increase) *Amount of Water Vapor (Also known as HUMIDITY) *Temperature: *HOT = Decrease in Air Pressure *COLD = Increase in Air Pressure *Amount of Water Vapor

Are There Types of Air Pressure? Yes, there are actually two types of Air Pressure that you commonly hear which are... *High Pressure *Low Pressure

LOW PRESSURE INFO... *Low Pressure brings WARM and RAINY skies. As air warms it expands causing the air molecules to spread out causing air pressure to decrease. So if the weather is warm, cloudy, and rainy there is a Low Pressure system in the area. *Low Pressure brings warmer and rainy skies *Low Pressure is UP in the atmosphere KEY WORD: LOW PRESSURE = WARMER, CLOUDY, RAINY

HIGH PRESSURE INFO... *High Pressure brings COOL and CLEAR skies. As air cools it contracts causing the air molecules to come together causing air pressure to increase. So if the weather is cool, clear, and fair there is a High Pressure system in the area. *High Pressure brings cooler and clear skies *High Pressure is Close to the Ground KEY WORD: HIGH PRESSURE = COOLER, CLEAR, FAIR

Oh Yeah I Almost Forgot... Air pressure moves from high to low!... One more time AIR PRESSURE MOVES FROM HIGH TO LOW! AIR PRESSURE MOVES FROM... HIGH LOW

Day 2 What Is Wind? November 28, 2017

Review: What is Air Pressure? Yesterday we talked about Air Pressure. So what is Air Pressure? Air Pressure: The force put on a given area by the weight of the air above it. What type of weather comes with High Pressure? COOL, FAIR WINDS and CLEAR skies What type of weather comes with Low Pressure? Low Pressure brings WARM and RAINY skies Which way does air pressure travel? AIR PRESSURE MOVES FROM HIGH TO LOW!...

What is Wind? Yesterday we talked about air pressure, today our focus will be on Wind. Wind: Air that moves horizontally. While air pressure is measured by a barometer Wind is charted using a wind vane. Wind Vane: Instrument used to chart wind direction. Anemometer: Instrument used to measure wind speed. Anemometer Wind Vane KEY WORDS: *Wind = horizontal air *Wind Vane = Wind Direction *Anemometer = Wind Speed

How is WIND Created: WIND IS CREATED BY DIFFERENCES IN AIR PRESSURE!... One more time WIND IS CREATED BY DIFFERENCES IN AIR PRESSURE! THE GREATER THE DIFFERENCE THE FASTER/HARDER THE WIND BLOWS! GREATER DIFFERENCE FASTER THE WIND! *Wind is created by Differences in Air Pressure *The Greater the Difference the Faster it Blows Click Here to Learn More

What is an Updraft & Downdraft *Wind is CREATED by DIFFERENCES in AIR PRESSURE or air rising (Low Pressure) and falling (High Pressure). Air that rises is know as an updraft. Air that is sinking is know as a downdraft. Updraft: Air that is rising Dowdraft: Air that is sinking *Updraft: Rising Air (HOT AIR) *Downdraft: Sinking Air (COLD AIR) *Low Pressure: RISES *High Pressure: Sinks KEY WORD: HIGH PRESSURE = DOWN LOW PRESSURE = UP

*The process of unequal heating and cooling of air ofter makes a pattern of rising air, sinking air, and winds is called a convection cell. Convection cell: A pattern of rising air, sinking air, and winds. What is a Convection Cell *Convection Cell: Rising Air, Sinking Air, and Wind *Sun Heats the Air: *Warm Air Rises *Cool Air Sinks Click Here to Learn More

Day 3 Wind Continued November 28, 2017

What is a Land Breeze & a Sea Breeze? A prime example of a convection cell would be a Land Breeze and a Sea Breeze. During the day the sun heats the land, causing the air to rise. As the air rises the cool air over the ocean moves in to take it's place. This is called a Sea Breeze. A Land Breeze occurs when the air over land cools and sinks pushing the warm air over the ocean upwards. Land Breeze: a breeze that blows from land to sea. LAND Sea Breeze: a breeze that blows from sea to land. SEA SEA LAND *Land Breeze: Wind that blows from land to sea *Sea Breeze: Wind that blows from sea to land KEY WORD: LAND BREEZE = LAND SEA BREEZE = SEA SEA LAND

Do you know Wind Zone the U.S.A is in? There are Global WIND Zones that cover the entire globe but the U.S.A. is only affected by one. The UNITED STATES is in zone known as the PREVAILING WESTERLIES. *United States is in the Prevailing Westerlies KEY WORD: PREVAILING WESTERLIES = WEST to EAST UNITED STATES = PREVAILING WESTERLIES

Students will complete "What are Sea Breezes and Land Breezes?" Turn in for a grade

Day 4 Water Cycle November 28, 2017

November 28, 2017 Water Cycle Today we will be focusing on the Water Cycle and all the things that make it what it is! Teachers- please out the sheet below for the students to fill in as we go!

November 28, 2017 What is the Water Cycle? The water cycle is the continuous movement of water between Earth's surface and the air, changing from liquid to gas to liquid. Water Cycle: the continuous movement of water between Earth's surface and the air, changing from liquid to gas to liquid The water cycle is comprised of Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Run off, and Transpiration. *Water Cycle: continuous movement of water on the earth

What is Evaporation? The first step in the water cycle is know as Evaporation. Evaporation is the process in which a liquid changes into a gas. Evaporation: the process of turning liquid into gas. Evaporation is all caused by the SUN heating water causing it to evaporate. Water that has been evaporated is called water vapor. Water Vapor: water in its gas state. *Evaporation process of liquid into gas *The SUN causes EVAPORATION KEY WORDS: Evaporation = WATER GAS

What is Condensation? The next step in the water cycle is know as Condensation. Condensation is the process in which a gas changes into a liquid. Condensation: the process of turning gas into liquid. Condensation happens when water vapor in the air rises and cools. Causing the water vapor to turn into water droplets, which ultimately forms CLOUDS... *Turning water vapor into a liquid *Caused by cooling *Forms Clouds KEY WORDS: Condensation = GAS Water

What is Precipitation? The next step in the water cycle is know as Precipitation. Precipitation is any form of water particles that falls to Earth. Precipitation: any form of water that falls to the ground. Precipitation occurs when the water droplets in clouds become too heavy to stay in the air. There are 4 types of precipitation. The temperature determines what type of precipitation will fall. *Precipitation is Any water that falls from the sky *Temperature determines the type of precipitation KEY WORD: PRECIPITATION = WATER FROM SKY

What is Run off? The last step in the water cycle is know as Run Off. Run off is any water that flows downhill to a stream, lake, or river. Run Off: any water that flows downhill. Run off is not the only thing that happens to water that has fallen to the ground. Some water is absorbed by the ground, which is called ground water. Some water is absorbed by plants. *Run off water flowing downhill *After precipitation water either becomes: *Run Off *Ground Water *Absorbed by Plants

What is Transpiration? Major bodies of water are not the only source of water vapor in the air. Plants also release water into the atmosphere. This process is known was Transpiration. Transpiration: water vapor released by plants through their leaves. *Transpiration is water vapor released from plants KEY WORDS: TRANSPIRATION = PLANTS
